New Hearthstone burn in period

I know from previous posts that a few of you have purchased new hearthstone wood stoves. I am curious about the burn in period and the fumes it produces. How smelly was it, how long did it last, and how many fires did you have to start until the fumes were no longer present?

We just bought a Hearthstone Phoenix this year. The manual states to have 2-3 small fires before burning it hot. We did that and noticed no measurable amount of odors. The stove did release steam in two of the burn-ins.

That's great to hear. I was really worried about fumes since I have birds in the house. How do you like the stove so far? Is it worth the steep price?

Six Cords Inside! That must be nice in your area related to the weather. Iâm finding some good Pecan mainly, Live Oak, Red Oak and Elm on the curbs related to Spring Cleaning (due to over gowned small lots). I should be ashamed to say, my loads are spotted during my exercise walks and neighborhood drives. The bad part is I w/n move a stick on major stacks on the curb w/o getting permission which might take 1-3 trips to get permission. Our 3 cord stock is basically restocked as we burn approx 2 cords during our last 3-4 seasons (due to drought and winter storm damage). The small truck loads have been good exercise and heat when the wood is plentiful. Iâll consider a tarp on the top of the older wood (1-2 seasons old) for the first time since some wood is held over a season. The bugs restricted us from keeping any extra wood inside vs a weeks load a door away on the patio (in a number of years). I have learned a lot on maintaining wood recently after working and burning since the mid 70s. A big difference was seeing wood cut and seasoned in East, TX for one season (where wood was plentiful) vs free wood stored over a year here in North, TX and less quality. Plus, I feel varieties are different in different regions, as I w/n bring Maple and Sycamore home due to noticing no burning qualities alone.

Hearthstone Homestead (or other soapstone)

Hello all I'm new to the forum and I just wanted to tell about my experiences with the Hearthstone Homestead. First some numbers; I live in a split entry 2100 square foot home in suburbia. We bought the Homestead last year when we could get a 30% tax credit on it. The purchase price was around $2,300 dollars. We finally installed the stove this year and have been heating almost exclusively with it. It has been an exceptionally mild winter here but even so I am most impressed with this stove. Our home was built in 2001 and is fairly well insulated the stove is rated to heat up to 1800 square feet but it easily heats our entire home comfortably. I burn seasoned ash and have been burning regularly I do not believe based on current usage that I will use more than about 2 chords this winter (seems hard to believe doesn't it?) I would like to take an oportunity to address the much overstated problem with soapstone woodstoves taking a long time to heat up and start contributing heat to the home. It simply isn't true. I grew up with a cast iron stove upstairs and a steel stove downstairs, additionally I have a fair amount of experience with a Defiant. Does soapstone take longer to heat up than cast? Yes, by a few minutes. I'm not exaggerating it doesn't take long at all and I believe it holds heat longer. One thing, the surface does not get as blisteringly hot as cast or steel. I keep a teapot full of water on it at all times and though it produces plenty of steam it does not produce the signature whistle that would undoubtably occur with cast or on a stove. Thus it is a softer heat. It is also simple and I perfer it over a catalytic model, less messing around and a more beautiful flame. It will not burn as long though. The literature says 8 hours of burn time. Not sure about that, last night I loaded it up as much as I dared and it was burning nicely but slow, that was at about 10:00 PM, at 6:30 I did have coals but that was all. So 8 hrs may be close but may be optimistic. This stove definately likes to be burned a certain way. Don't try and turn it down to low too fast or you'll end up with a smokey fire that produces creasote. Start the fire and let it burn freely until the stove is good and hot, at this point you'll probably have to add some logs. You can turn it down but don't go way down. Get a good bed of coals in there and keep it tended, you'll get a feel for when you can load it up and turn it down without producing smoke or burning too cool. If you see smoke from your chimney it is burning too cool. Overall this is an excellent stove, one I highly recommend. I am thrilled to be heating with a renewable with fuel I harvest myself and though we don't really fit in, in suburbia I can't think of a more sensible manner to heat.

Small Modern Stoves - Hearthstone Bari or ?

Bali, I'm not sure what your definition of unduly expensive is but a Bari goes from somewhere between $3,800 and $4,400. If you're OK with that price range there are a number of stoves which would fit your needs. Simpler, smaller stoves would include the Nestor Martin R33, Morso 3142 or 6140, or a Scan Andersen series. For more money you could go with a Max Blank which are the Rolls Royce of wood stoves. I would personally recommend the Pacific Energy Fusion. They range in price from $1,850 or so up to $2,400 depending on the cladding and come with an optional fire screen for open door viewing so you could still have some fireplace functionality. These are very well built stoves from Canada with a good US dealer network and substantial warranties. There are virtually no American stove companies that make modern looking stoves but all of the ones I mentioned do sell in the US. All of those brands above are reliable but it may be hard to find dealers in your area or difficult to get replacement parts in the future. There are many other great European brands like Rika and Palazetti that would suit your design goals really well but they don't sell on our side of the pond, unfortunately. Good luck.

jjplant, I wish I had been able to locate my stove in a central location like that. I would have loved to get that little Tribute model and put it on my main floor where I could watch the fire. There was just no place to put it. You'll be a lot better off than me by having an interior chimney. I've run into the cold exterior flue thing where I have to use more wood to keep the flue sufficiently hot to avoid creosote buildup. Your interior stack will provide heat that mine cannot as well. If you want to reduce the time it takes to get the soapstone up to a good heat, try starting your fires backwards. By that I mean, put a few large split logs on the bottom with a space between them, put medium to small logs across those, kindling of top, light a stick of fat wood and stick it under the kindling. The kindling will ignite the other stuff below as the coals fall down. I got my stove up to 400 within 30 minutes using this method. You also don't have to keep running back to build up the newly started fire with this method. I'm loving it. Just make sure that you'll have the adequate chimney height for the stove you choose. I love my Heritage, but it takes a minimum 13' chimney. You're going straight up, so you should be good to go no matter what you get. By the way, I believe Hearthstone discounts their stoves in January each year for a few weeks.

Once you own a soapstone stove you will never be happy with anything else. It's TOTALLY worth the dough! (Woodstock Soapstone girl, here).

We have a bird, too!

Chelone, I take it your bird didn't have any problems with the break in fumes? Jjplant's response eases my concerns a lot, but I still worry about it. Glad to hear the soapstone praises. I think I put the whammy on the season though by finally getting a stove. It's November and 70 degrees in CT. How bizarre is that?

Larry (bird) has been with us since 1989. He's survived the break in period of the soapstone stove, several kitchen "disasters", painting with alkyd paints, 6 cats, and 4 dogs.

Yep, our little cockatiel has seen a lot... (aren't birds great?!).

Wow, that's an old tiel! Good for him. It takes a load off my mind about the stove too. I love my birdies, and don't want to put their health in jepoardy. I think that birds can take a lot more than we give them credit for. I have an electus parrot who chewed her way into one of my kitchen cabinet, steals anything she can find and drags it into what is now her cabinet. She's probably come in contact with dozens of potentially toxic things, and she's about to turn 12 years of age. I can't wait to fire up this stove.

1)While I was putting on the heatsheild I found one of the threaded holes in the flue collar stripped.

2)They sent a brown enamel ash lip for a sea foam stove.

3) It was drawing too much air and had a whistle. The air intake was dented and had to be pryed out.

4) They say to do a dollar bill test to see if your gaskets are good. Brand new stove, I can pass a dollar bill through a section of the door gasket like it was a vending machine. I'm not sure what to do about that but the dealer knows about it.

Other than that it's great!

Okay, now I'm a little more nervous again. I'm hoping my stove doesn't have all those problems. I heard someone else say something about the gaskets being bad. This is an awful lot of money to spend for a stove that has problems right out of the box.

With most wood stoves you can adjust the handles for a snugger fit.

With the Harmans all you do is turn the handle either left or right until there is the right fit. Other brands may require the use of a tool to tighten it up. The owners manuals should address this.

Got the Heritage today. It's beautiful. I can't wait to get it installed. I did the dollar test. Side doors nice and tight, but the dollar slides right out of the front door. I'll have to check the manual to see about adjusting it.
