H&M Austin high or regular back, Ultra down?
Comments (2)We have had the Austin regular-height tilt back chair and ottoman for about three months now and we absolutely love it. It is a smaller chair than the high back, but we also bought a recliner, and we didn't need two big chairs in the same room. The cushions are the standard fill. At first we thought the cushions a bit firm and full, but now that we have used it awhile it is very comfortable. We also were used to sitting on older furniture that now feels absolutely flat when we sit on it....See MoreBassett Sofa with Down Cushions?????
Comments (1)I can't address Bassett cushions specifically, but generally the industry all uses the same basic format, and from your description you are telling me that you are looking to buy a down-wrapped cushion, not a spring down. Most furniture builder outsource their cushions, so they're pretty commonplace among the major suppliers. Down 'leaking' is a thing of the past, as any maker has down-proof ticking surrounding the actual down itself. As for 'packing down', it sure does take a long time for that to happen, I've seen down cushions routinely go thirty years, much longer than the coverings and frames in some cases. Almost all cushions are lifetime warrantied from all the major premium makers these days, thats not unique to Bassett. Cushion suppliers warranty them, so the furniture makers pass that along to you. Most the time, you only have to pay the UPS charge for a new cushion and they rarely want your old one back. Here's the three basic cushion types, simplified: Qualex (Foam): Just as it sounds, wrapped with a fiber ticking. Better foams can be quite durable and comfortable. For most leather furniture, this is the best choice. They retain their shape and form well. Semi-Down Cushion (Down Wrapped). You have the foam cores, and then 1" to 2" of goods feather down is wrapped in the ticking and surrounds the foam. Usually a nominal upcharge. Spring Down (Marshall Unit). A high tech cushion that replaced the full-down cushion in most applications. A Marshall Unit is a series of small grids (waffle-like) each with a small spring about the size of a pencil inside every individual grid. The down is them placed inside each grid with the spring in each one acting as a shock absorber. There are hundreds of little grids and springs in a typical sofa cushion. All is then encased and wrapped with another layer of down encased in ticking. Marshall units are expensive to make as you would imagine, and carry a premium upcharge. The benefit is all the comfort of a down cushion, but the cushion will return to about 80% of its height after being sat upon, and doesn't need to be fluffed back up like an all-down cushion. It always pains me to hear of an upholsterer throwing out a Marshall unit cushion to replace with conventional, unwrapped foam during a re-upholstery procedure. Rarely have I ever seen a Marshall unit break down, and you cannot simply go do the crafts store and buy one. Most will last through three or four upholstery jobs just fine. They are custom made and usually only available from the manufacturer IF they are still making that specific model frame. Hope that helps explain it some. Comments (12)I know this is a super old thread but maybe there are other people searching for Massoud and not finding anything. So I want to help other before they make the mistake we made. We bought 2 club chairs that were very expensive. We were not offered a choice of down for those cushions. We always buy down when available, despite the chore of fluffing, beating and turning, they are much better and worth it IMO.. But let's talk about the chairs: Fabric is gorgeous, craftsmanship looks fine, but the upholstery material is cheap and flimsy. It feels like dorm room seat cushions you buy at Walmart. It even makes a little crunchy noise when you sit. Seriously. My husband is a tall 250lbs man, and he seats on the chairs for more than 30 min and the seat is crushed, and it takes a day to go back to normal. We flip the seat and back pillows DAILY and still, they are embarrassingly crushed after 2 months of use. This is extremely disappointing and we are beating ourselves up for having believed that $$$$ equaled quality. Don’t buy Massoud!...See MoreDown Sofa Cushions
Comments (9)i am in love with our spring down cushion on a stanford chair and a half we've had for over 15 years. in that time not one feather has escaped -and the sit and comfort is magnificent. there is simply no finer quality. that said, if stanford isn't making the cushion, i'd have nothing to do with down. i have just gotten rid of two all down seat cushions from my lee sofas. they were purchased brand new and moved into our new build in august. i have tried since then to love them, but i had to face reality. no one in the family would sit in the living room since the sofas were so uncomfortable. the down would need to be "fluffed" after every single use -which was no easy task, since they basically felt more like giant cement blocks instead of feathers. the down was coming through the "protective" cover and up through the upholstery. the entire house looked as if a flock of geese had taken up residence in our home. feathers everywhere, all the time. i am thankful to be rid of them. i asked lee to replace with spring fiber cushions and they are so much better. definitely not anything near the comfort of the stanford, but i didn't expect they would be. the stanford chair cost basically the same as the two sofas. a very different animal altogether. so. that said, i don't trust down to just any manufacturer. since you're talking about seat cushions only, i'm assuming you will have them made by a local place. i would visit and test out everything they make. if you can't sit in it, don't buy it. i do need replacement cushions for a hancock and moore sofa we will have reupholstered. i'd like to get fiber wrapped spring cushions for it as well. but it depends on who will be making them. the only thing i know for sure -as mentioned above, no down ever again, unless it's from stanford, period. good luck!...See Morelizh
