Kursed with Kumquats

My nail lady gave me five pound of kumquats. Don't tell her I don't care for them! Ah well my loss will be someone else's gain. Recipe linked below for 'Kumquats in Spiced Syrup with Cloves, Cinnamon, and Star Anise' (and I had to go to Penzeys for the star anise, none of my stores carried it!). Um don't tell anyone also that I forgot to put the cinnamon stick in the jars at the end...oooops....also, the instructions don't say to BWB, but I did, yes I did, I'm a good canner.

    Oh, ah! Jessy

Love the little devils, you could curse me...I have star anise just loitering in my pantry.

Awesome looking. Brandy too? Can't get better than that. I was surprised that I didn't see any at the Kumquat Festival last month.

I'm embarrassed to say I've never tried a kumquat before! What do they taste like?

Well, I'll be darned. You don't like kumquats, and get them for free. I love kumquats and have to pay for them. And I haven't even broken a mirror in well over twenty years.

But, Jessica, your post is timely, as I just bought a pound of these beauties. Thank you for the recipe and the visuals. Excellent pictures.

Donna, the oval shaped kumquats like Jessica posted are delicious raw, or so I seem to think. They have a sweet rind and a sour interior. Sort of like an orange, only in reverse.

Sol hurry up and make these because your photography will do them justice!

    'Orange in reverse' thats it!

Bubbe, I was going to ask how Manhattanites do their grocery shopping. I've read horror stories of the Brooklyn co-op?

Donna, You in the kumquat center of the country! Next January get yourself over to the Kumquat Festival and enjoy.

Thanks Sol, for explaining the flavor. I didn't know you could eat the skin.

Cathy, is Dade City on the West Coast of FL? I've lived in Florida since I was 6, and I've never heard of the Kumquat festival! Did you go to it this year?

I need to get out more.....

Sorry for hijacking your thread, Jessy. My ignorance is astounding even me:-)

A client just gave my husband a big bowl of kumquats for me...my marmalade recipe calls for 3 pounds of fruit, and I only have 2 1/2 pounds. I suppose I'll mix some meyer lemons in with them.

The first time I had a kumquat, I had never seen one before and didn't know anything about it. So I peeled the darn thing, and wondered why someone would go through so much trouble for a tiny bite of way-too-sour citrus. It wasn't until a good time after that I found out you were supposed to eat the whole thing, now I love 'em. I bought a kumquat tree this year, but can't really expect too much out of it for another couple of years or so.

they are kinda kute though! I think you just like saying kumquats... ;-)

What's wrong with Cursed with C ... well, let's just stop right there.
Lest we give some pervs another idea for a party.
