What's a hat channel?

I'm reading up on building a tile base for my wood stove. I'm looking at the diagram for the wall clearances. Between the drywall and backerboard is something called a hat channel. All it says is that it provides 1" of air space. It doesn't say what exactly it is, where I can get it, or how to install it. I hate these books that tell you just enough to leave you with more questions.

One noteable thing. Apparently they make heat-resistant mortar to set the backerboard onto the plywood, which I was not aware of until now.

Anyone who can tell me about hats gets a cookie.
