Sue629-Question about Highpoint?

Sue--Read your post about Highpoint. To save time when I go this summer, we are looking for contemporary style sofa and chair, like Natuzzi style, but microfiber not leather. Clean square lines, even boxy looking. The Pottery Barn/Crate & Barrel type styles without their big $ tags. Can you recommend certain showrooms we should visit and ones we can skip due to what we're looking for. You mentioned Kagan's has contemporary style. What about FurniturelandSouth? Or do we really have to visit several because they carry so many different furniture styles or are their some places we can skip all-together because they only sell traditional, colonial styles. I've searched all the local furniture stores at home and can't find much offerings in what we're looking for. Thanks for the insiders preview.

Furnitureland South has a whole room dedicated to Natuzzi, they are also the only ones in the area who feature a large selection of contemporary furniture. Most other places are pretty traditional, in style though you will find scattered among the various stores some contemporary styles. I would start with Furnitureland South. It is huge and you will need a good amount of time to get through the many rooms. Across the street from them is Drexel Heritage, Thomasville and Boyles. All have nice selections but perhaps not the style you are looking for. If you have time they are worth looking around in, cause you never know what you can find. the showrooms are very nice and easy to get around. The only other place I would recommend to look is in the mall downtown, Kagans had a contemporary showroom there at one time, not sure if they are still there, there is also another store there called Reflections. I think they have a store in High point,but I was in the one in Hickory. Very contemporary furniture. Look them up on the net and see if they have a store in HP.
also Chamber of Commerce will send you a catalogue book of all the stores and what manufacturers they carry. Have fun!

Sue--Thanks for the heads-up on FurnitureLandSouth and Natuzzi and the other contemporary showrooms. Will definitely check them out when we go and before we go. It will certainly help to narrow down the stores and not waste a lot of time looking in mostly traditional style galleries.

Hi, John B. can tell you about the Capitol Chapter of the Gesneriad Society in Washington DC. That would be an excellent source for plants and leaves. At the AGGS convention on Long Island last July there was a great selection of chiritas in the plant sale. I think I bought about four or five chiritas. I just love my little plant of 'Betty', a knockout foliage form of sinensis. The chapter in New Jersey does a fantastic job of propagating these and other choice gesneriads. Their sale would be worth a special trip as well as the DC show and sale. Another source would be to visit some of our mail order nurseries. I have heard many good reports from people who have visited Lyndon Lyon Greenhouses in upstate NY. The best grown chiritas that I bought at the convention came from them--'Betty', liboensis, etc.. Florals of Fredericks is another source that is somewhere in the mid-Atlantic area. I don't know about visiting them though. The last source I can think of is the AGGS seed fund. The selection of chiritas is down a bit from its highpoint but there are still many good ones. Just remember that not all chiritas are the rosulate kinds. They come in shrubs like moonii and walkeri (and 'Moonwalker'), as well as annuals. For mail order I would recommend Lyndon Lyons, for the quality of the plants. They may arrive with some broken leaves as chiritas are not pliant, but those leaves and even leaf halves can be put down for propagation--that's what I did with pieces of my chiritas that I brought back on the airplane from the convention. Last weekend we were in Northern California for my husband Mark's 45th high school reunion. After having dinner at a trendy sushi restaurant Friday night with friends and family, just as we were settling up the bill, a complete stranger bounces up to our table and asks ... "Anyone here named Mark?" We figured the guy worked at the restaurant and was returning our credit card but no, he told us he was on a Photo Scavenger Hunt for his brother's birthday party. One of the items on the list was to find and photograph someone named Mark (the brother's name). So, the guy took a photo of my husband and the name part of his driver's license. No, every door, interior and exterior, (and windows) have those square corbels. And this house has an excess of doors and windows. :( I do think it's good to have it pointed out. I hadn't considered it at all and when it comes times to do the kitchen, the fluting and corbels will clash with the look I am going for in there. So, if I can talk my husband into the extra work, I think we can replace the trim in the open areas. I don't care about the bedrooms. The windows are covered by long panels anyway. ;)

I completely understand. I never would have paid that much for a sink either. I ordered a blanco super single. The plumber provided a double sink to the counter fabricator instead. They looked all over to find me a single sink that would fit the hole cut for a double. We initially tried Kohler strive which seemed basically same sink but center drain. It didn't work but the 8 degree did. I didn't pay the difference since it was their fault and the alternative was to get a new slab of granite. I would never have spent so much on a sink before, but now I've had it honestly I would sacrifice something else bc I love it that much. It works really well for our family, and I use it many times a day so I really appreciate it. Good luck, I also had no idea it was so hard to find a single sink not to mention around here it is not common so the plumber, contractor and counter guys all thought I was crazy for insisting on a single instead of just taking the double that fit the hole they cut.

Sue629- thank you for sharing your knowledge. I am also heading to NC and would like to know if:

1. Does Hickory have as much of a selection as Highpoint.

2. Which carries the high end furniture lines?

3. Which companies are considered high end, quality traditional furniture?

4. If you could only get to one of these towns and you had a whole house to furnish, which town would you choose? Why?

5. Where would you stay in Highpoint? Hickory?

6. What do I need to bring with me, to be prepared so that I do not waste the visit. i only want to do this once if I can pull it off.

bnicebkind, I have alot of suggestions for shopping in NC. I have done 2 houses (Florida, new construction and New England, existing home) going to Nc for furnishings for both and learned alot It would take up a lot of space here so if you would like you can email me with an email address(not sure if that is a legal thing to do here or not but if not I can do it on site here, it will just be long) and
