Decent burn time, heats about 1500 square feet, and you should find this unit for around 1800 bucks. The liner and installation can cost in the neighborhood of 1000-1500 bucks. Its a well crafted unit that has a decent fireview. THere are others on the market, but this is one im familer with. Yes you do have to line it with stainless and make shure that they bid it with a insulation wrap around it. If you dont install the insulation you will be cutting corners, they perform better insulated and create less creosote. Good luck and let me know what you find out.

We're building a new house and are looing for an arched top gas fireplace for our familyroom. We've looked at both the Heat-N-Glo Gem 36/42 and the Heatilator Caliber CD4842. We really like the look of the Gem with the curved top, and I know about the recall that happened earlier this year, but I want to hear of any bad experiences with either of these fireplaces. Our builder is telling us the Gem is about $1400-1700 more than the Heatilator, so that will factor in too. Thanks, Tim

The NB3630 is a B Vent fireplace (not a Direct Vent). B-vent fireplaces are tested and listed as a decorative appliance. Where a direct vent fireplace (ND3630) is tested to a heater rating standard. There's no improving what you have in the NB3630. If you want heat, you'll have to do a complete fireplace and flue change out. If your builder's contract stated that you were geting the ND3630 direct vent version, then you should have a conversation with them about that.
