need suggestions on filling holes in floor before sanding.

HI, this is a follow on from another post on No.2 white oak flooring I am laying..Love the floors imperfections for our cabin, but there are some worm holes and other holes large enough to need filling. Another post mentioned a two part exopy, amber colored, that they used, but without the name of the product. I am concerned that some of the fillers offered at home depot will not hold up over time, and would appreciate any advice. I presume I need to fill before sanding, and we will be staining with Minwax "provincial" stain, then 3 or 4 coats of oil based poly.

The two-part epoxy that someone mentioned is made by the 3M company. You purchase an applicator and then the D-100 cartridges and mixing nozzles for it. Any good hardwood floor materials dealer should have it all in stock. The cartidges are not cheap...about $10 each. The applicator was about $20 when I bought mine. I don't know what they cost today.

You could also use Timbermate floor filler in white oak color. However, I would recommend testing to see how the color out of the box will stain with your chosen stain. Timbermate also is something you get at a flooring materials dealer.

Hi texwing, I'm the one who mentioned filling the holes with epoxy. We use G5 by West System, but I don't think they sell it at Home Depot.

Though I thought I'd take the advice of the majority here and embrace the table's past, I did end up filling and painting. It all boiled down to what worked and what didn't, which some times you don't really know until you just dive in and find out. After some prep work for a light staining (leaving holes) I realized there were other practical considerations and needed a nicer surface in order to make it practical. It's chalk painted (well not boutique chalk paint, my own sorta like it version that looks very similar) white with reasonably heavy distressing and a matte clear sealer on the top only. It's working great so far, though the room is too far from finished for photos. I added "feet" to raise to to a more workable height and made sure to sand (and sand, and sand and sand again) between each coat and at the end, especially over the nail heads and edges and where to board lines are on top. Thanks for everyone's input!! You guys really are the best advice going. ;)

I would just use some EasySand 20 and mix it to the consistency so that it is not too gooey. The goal isn't really to fill the hole completely, but just enough so that your next coat you will be able to fill it completely.

Caulk is for gaps, not holes. Yes, people use it for filling holes but that is not what it is for. You want the holes to disappear forever and you will never accomplish this by using caulk because the caulk goes into the hole so you end up with a half-filled hole and if you put too much caulk on, which most DIY'ers do, then you will have globs of caulk that you can't sand off because caulk doesn't sand off. I use drywall mud and I overfill the hole by just a small amount to account for shrinkage and then sand it flush. I use the Plus 3 because it's very easy to sand. If you use general purpose or vinyl spackle, this will be harder to sand. Another good product to use is 3M's patch plus primer. I don't really know if there is primer in the patching compound, but this is a good product to use if you don't want to worry about nail holes flashing through and you only want to apply one coat of finish. I always do two coats though on new trim for the build. Also, Sherwin Williams has some shrink free spackling that works well. Stay away from Red Devil spackling because it is vinyl based and does not sand well at all.

Something like Red Devil Onetime lightweight spackling works perfectly in small hole and cracks. Definitely better than caulk. It dries quick and sands easily but if you put it on smoothly enough you don't need to sand. If it's needed, caulk works better at the crack on the top or bottom of the shoemold.

Thanks for the info: This is a low use low traffic floor in a semi rustic cabin setting, and I suppose we don't want to to fill anymore perfections than is functionally necessary-is it ok to have a wormhole gap in the wood that is 1/4 inch deep and wide and an inch long? or a wormhole that is 1/4 wide and goes al the way through the wood? After I apply poly will I find these depressions attractive and rustic, or a nuisance that collect dirt? We would appreciate your thoughts...
