What are the best months or week for furniture shopping in NC?

Someone had mentioned at one time that there were certain dates during the year that were the BEST times for shopping furniture in North Carolina. What are those dates, and why are they better than other times?

Where do you like to stay that is central to everything?

I went last year in March and they seem to have some sales....but alot of it was on floor furniture. Whatever you do...make an appointment ahead of time with a sales person...so she/he can spend a day,weekend or week with you.

I purchased a Louis Phillippe bedroom set from National Mt. Airy about 10 years ago. Just before delivery of the furniture, I was told that they were being bought out by Bassett. The sales person I was working with told me that Bassett was not nearly as good quality as National Mt. Airy and that their customer service was lacking. (BTW, I would only rate National Mt. Airy as mid-level to begin with). Also - I agree with belle_va in that they only sell direct from their own stores and not through NC - sames as say Ethan Allen. About two or three years ago, I visited a Bassett Direct store to see if they had a sleigh bed similar to my National Mt. Airy. I have a queen and was considering changing to a King. When I compared their furniture to NMA, I agree, it didn't even come close in quality and construction.

Sorry- I found it. I called to compare prices on two items- a Bradington Young sofa, and a Barcolounger chair. Same as Basista, less than Boyles. They carry some good brands- will keep site- thank you for letting us know- some, like me are new to ordering online...

TommeCA, I have been doing a search for yarn stores in the different states we have been visiting this summer. I didn't do a search for the DC area, because I didn't think we would be going there. We did. We made a detour to visit my husband's cousin and his wife. She knits, though it's been many years, and would like to get started again. I asked her about stores in the area, and she said there weren't any. I just emailed her with the link that was posted above. I wish I had looked them up before I left. I just type in i.e. "VA yarn stores" in the search engine and get lots of info like was mentioned above. Enjoy your trip and find lots of good places to shop! When I stayed with my daughter in Cincinnati, OH for a month 2 years ago, we did the same thing in that area. You are right. You walk into some and come out with yarn and new friends. Others, you walk out wondering how they stay in businss. We walked out of 2 of them thinking that! Many things have changed in NC furniture shopping, and my first foray was probably at least 35 years ago. One of the main ones is there are many fewer stores since so little furniture is made there anymore. Another is sales tax. Furnitureland South charges sales tax now, eliminating some of its former savings. We still travel to Furnitureland South because it's fun, and we can sit in and touch all our potential purchases. I have found Furnitureland very receptive to problems, and they replaced a damaged living room chair, and later, 2 damaged kitchen chairs without batting an eye. However, the outcome of our last trip there for outdoor furnishings was they were $275 higher PER CHAIR for the Lane Venture chairs we wanted than Lexington Furniture in Lexington, Ky. Lexington also charges no sales tax. But, recently, I wanted to purchase 2 more, and they were only $150 or so less than the same chairs on Onekingslane. I think the proliferation of online dealers is minimizing price differences between furniture sellers. Even the prices in our local furniture store are not that much higher than NC.

I know a lot of people think you save a lot of money buying furniture in N.C. but my experience is quite the opposite.
Example- Sherrill sofa, 2 Sherrill chairs both in group B fabric with Super UD cushions, Nichols & Stone table and 6 chairs. Large N.C. discounter $7515 with freight. Local independent store in the Midwest $6364. with tax.
So, always check your local stores.

They have Aftermarket Sales in May and Nov. I'm scheduled to go May 1-4. 3 full days of shopping is what I need since there is so much to see. Check out the Hickory Furniture Mart website for more info.

I do save money there. Even with my decorating discount here, its still better to shop NC overall. But you have to know where to look and what to buy.

Frankks is right, you can also find deals locally sometimes. The good thing about NC, is that the merchandise is concentrated in one location and you don't have to drive all over the place. Plus there is more furniture to examine and compare.

The other big plus is the salespeople and service. They don't make you feel uncomfortable when you want to look at catalogs, swatches and finish samples. I find they are helpful and never condescending or snooty.

If anyone in the retail furniture industry is listening please note this. It turns a lot of people off to shop locally and I speak from experience.
