Gas fireplace hearth too hot?

Installed a new gas fireplace and it really pumps out the heat!

Looks good & feels great, but after running it for a few hours on high (initial run to burn stuff off, on high for visual effect) I noticed the 12" of tile in front of it was too hot to keep my hand against. Same for the approx 12" of Glitsa-coated fir flooring against the tile hearth. Temperature cooler further out than that.

But it scared me that it got that hot. Someone (or a pet) could burn themselves, and I wonder what effect that has on my Glitsa clearcoat or the wood surrounding the fireplace, hearth or "hot" fir flooring. I've had a gas fireplace before but it didn't throw off this much heat, and was also installed with a hearth in front the height of a single low brick.

So, am I right to be scared? What is normal? How do I see if this is a safety hazard/code violation?

TIA - R.
