Advise on Gym Room Flooring needed.

We are doing a major renovation to our new house and added an extension in the back that included a new gym room in the basement.

This is for a gym that will be getting much use, both my wife and myself work out regularly (4 times/week each, not at the same time) for years and this room was very important to us.

The rest of the basement will have hardwood floors, but I have been seriously looking at the rubber flooring for the gym. It sounds like it would be more comfortable and meet our demands, I use free weights and do not want to worry about damaging the floor.

Any particular brands or thickness recommended? I want the floor in the gym to be covered completely. I also have some heavy equipment that needs to be level at all times, especially while in use, would this be a problem?

My gym floor is rubber and that's definitely the way to go.
We actually bought 4 X 8 rubber mats at Tractor Supply and laid them out all together. I think they are something like 5/16 to 1 inch in thickness. You wouldn't want to go below 1/2 inch in thickness with your heavy equipment. Our mistake was that we did not get interlocking mats and even with heavy equipment on them they do move around a little bit and leave slight cracks between the mats.

Last Q yes you need to have return high Next are you adding sqft Next in the midsouth depending on exposure and insulation 1 cfm per sqft but the previous question is critical to this number if you are adding sqft then you are going to have problems. Appreciate everyone’s advice truly however the room is not in makeover... the floor, walls, bar, fireplace, window treatments and picture and all brand new. I am not changing any of them. Is that closet usable as a passage from the master to the nursery? It sounds pretty useless, so maybe you could punch a door into the back wall and not have to to into the hall to access the nursery. Where is the air duct vent? Are you talking about a big return air vent or just a small vent on the floor or wall? Point out its location and size on your floor plan. I would put the changing table on the hall wall, the crib on the wall perpendicular to the hall door (so it can be seen from the hall without going in and disturbing) and the chair and dresser on the closet wall. Angle the chair in the corner so you can see the hall door to speak to dad when he comes to the door while you're rocking/nursing. The dresser and changing table will be in close proximity for dressing baby.

Just my opinion, I've been in a house where they tried to match the vinyl wood-look to the actual hardwood in the rest of the house - and it only made it painfully obvious that the vinyl was fake wood. I think it looks better to either use the exact same flooring across, or else do something that is very distinctly different. Trying to match just ends up with something looking not quite right to the eye.

Pawling generally makes what are considered the best athletic floor material. Their interlocking tiles are actually hidden so you don't see the interlock. it's professional grade stuff (www.pawling.com).

You want to try and stay away from recycled rubber if at all possible. While recycled has the benefit of being a bit more "green" if call it - the rubber smell takes a very long time to go away (if ever). The smell in High quality virgin rubber pretty much dissipates to a very slight rubber scent after a couple months of being exposed.

You will want to use at least 3/8" with 1/2" being better. On high-impact areas (like free weights) try to use some punishment pad type of material under it as well as aerobic equipment. It certainly isn't necessary with the pawling tiles, but the tiles look so nice that you probably don't want to intentionally scuff them up.

The Pawling products look perfect. Are you aware, anthem, where it is sold? I cannot find any retailers in Montreal.

I've always heard Gorilla Mats recommended. Haven't tried them myself.

Just search for Hid-N-Lok which is the pawling product. There are quite a few people who do sell Pawling products. They aren't easily available from local retailers but that doesn't really matter since they are going to be shipped/drop shipped anyhow. They aren't cheap though as they are the same stuff that commercial gyms use. Expect $10/sq ft ($40-$45/2 x 2 tile) or so.
