Furniture Design Dilemma kids room

Need advise how to layout new born baby room

Hi all,
Right now it’s just myself and my husband. I’m pregnant with our first baby.

We have 2 spare rooms. 1 is a guest room already set up with a queen size bed. The second room is empty so naturally the nursery will be this room. However it’s quite smaller.

Here is a photo of the room. Under the window there is a heater. So I can’t place anything to block the heater.

We also have central air and half the closet in this room is taken up by the air duct vent. And this closet also serves as a crawl space into the attic, which we don’t use. My husband only goes up there if we’re doing construction and needs to get to the ceilings it roof.

What’s the best way to layout this room? The necessities are
1. Crib
2. Changing table
3. Dresser to store clothing / things
4. Rocking chair and maybe a matching foot rest if there’s space?

Is that closet usable as a passage from the master to the nursery? It sounds pretty useless, so maybe you could punch a door into the back wall and not have to to into the hall to access the nursery. Where is the air duct vent? Are you talking about a big return air vent or just a small vent on the floor or wall? Point out its location and size on your floor plan. I would put the changing table on the hall wall, the crib on the wall perpendicular to the hall door (so it can be seen from the hall without going in and disturbing) and the chair and dresser on the closet wall. Angle the chair in the corner so you can see the hall door to speak to dad when he comes to the door while you're rocking/nursing. The dresser and changing table will be in close proximity for dressing baby.

congratulations! Since Baby's room is relatively small, I'd skip the changing table and just put a changing pad on top of a dresser. We put a changing pad on a Ikea hemnes dresser (like below.) This dresser holds A LOT.

I would prefer to have the doors and individual lockers with a decent seat in front so people can actually sit down in front to tie laces, put on boots..... Open lockers look messy in a real home, doors keep it cleaner. But also many kids want life quick and easy and may just drop things on the floor instead of opening locker doors. Doors also add to cost, and here they are expensive, it would be several thousand to do the built-ins in your inspiration picture. So cost.... really factors in on what to do. These are our new built-ins in our new home. I cheaped out due to the cost of the whole house build adding up and put in the standard lockers. I wish we would of spent more for the added expense of adding the side walls to each locker. In our previous build, we had side walls to each locker, one double hook at the back wall higher up and two lower double hooks lower on each side. Making each locker a six hook instead of the only the double on the open lockers. Back hooks for jackets, side hooks for backpacks.... So much better and functional to add the side walls. We still might down the road but our children are getting older, but if I had young children in a long snowy winter environment, it would of been a must. Kitchen and Family Room half wall separator. Advise needed!

Did you ask the contractors why the half wall had to stay? I cannot think of a reason why the return could not be on the living room or kitchen full wall expect that both the kitchen and living room remaining walls look like exterior walls...even then there looks like an interior wall on the other side of the opening across from the half-wall. I just moved one...not a real problem...the late-twenty-something sheet metal guy was not real happy (more his personality than a reflection of the job's difficulty)...but it was not very expensive to do. He had to cut into the subfloor which our carpenter patched. I seriously felt like reminding the sheet metal installer that if people never needed him to do ANYTHING, there would be no reason for him to get a paycheck...bit my tongue but his p&m'ing sure got tiresome! Is there a basement; if yes, finished or unfinished ceiling? Our ceiling was finished....that too was easily patched.

I think we have decided to keep the knee wall. I don't think the extra 6" in counter depth above the dishwasher is worth it. I have been really worried how that was going to look being so open like that. Especially given that we are going with the Blanco Culina Semi-professional faucet which is almost 2 feet tall. Now to decide what to do for the backsplash area on that knee wall. Do we carry the quartz up and over or use two rows of subway tile between the counter and ledge (will be quartz).

I second the suggestion to skip the changing table. We bought an expensive one, and hardly used it. We ended up mostly using a changing pad on

a bathroom countertop, plus several of those portable diaper change caddy things around the house. Especially immediately post partum, I rarely felt like carrying our first baby back to her room for diaper changes. Sometimes saving even a few steps makes a big difference.

Jan- I Can't take credit for that cute nursery above (I found it via a google search,) but I totally agree with having those diaper change caddies around the house.
