Vinyl floor - what did you get?

I have looked over a variety of floor options and have decided to replace the current vinyl with a new vinyl in our kitchen. The current vinyl is 20 years old! There are a lot of vinyl options out there so I am interested in those who chose vinyl

- what did you get (company, color, etc.)
- how is it holding up / do you like it
- installation (is it glued, floated, etc?)

I am really liking some of the stuff by Earthwerks but not seeing much about it past their website and a few flooring sites that recommended it. But I am not settled on any one company at this point.

We put Duraceramic vinyl tile by Congoleum in our kitchen about two years ago. The Duraceramic feels much more comfortable under foot and it cleans much more easily than the ceramic tile which it replaced. It's glued down and grouted with the Duraceramic grout. It looks very much like ceramic tile yet cleans much more easily. I had ceramic tile for almost 30 years and couldn't wait to be rid of it.

Used Armstrong Connection Corlon with full seam welds. Flooring looks like terrazzo and comes in many colors. We used White Cliffs. Another good point is that it is inlaid so the patter goes though it and it is not just a picture on the top. No problem moving chairs on it. Flooring comes in 6 foot lengths.

It is warm, feels great on the feet and it not slippery. We really like that we don't have to worry at all about the kids getting it wet or anything.

All seams run the same direction, and look like metal strips that would normally be used with terrazzo. In the pic one goes to the middle of the stove.

Not knowing what caused it, I'd make a paste of baking soda and water, let it sit on the stain, then gently scrub at it. Good luck. I have a couple of "mystery" stains on my linoleum kitchen floor, will have a go at them today. I came down this morning to find my daughter had spilled some spaghetti sauce in front of the refrigerator. Part grease, part tomato (acid). I quickly picked it up with a paper towel, then a quick run over with my Swiffer WetJet.

How do you get scuff marks off Metrofloor vinyl planks?

We use wd 40 lubricating oil to remove scuffs on vinyl at times. Test it in an inconspicuous area 1st. Good Luck.

The exterior materials of window parts play a big role in price and performance but it's dangerous making assumptions based on material alone. I tend to agree with JDS that poor quality vinyl should be avoided and phased out. There are high quality vinyl windows available that come with factory finished dark colors and can still outperform the aluminum clad or fiberglass competition. Energy performance is mostly about the installation, IGU or glass package and the window unit's airtightness. Be sure you are meeting 2012/2015 energy codes when it comes to U-value, SHGC and the blower door test results that windows and doors so heavily impact. It might be cost-effective to beat code here. Double hung or sliding door and window styles tend to be the least efficient when it comes to energy performance. Longevity or durability is mostly about installation and how the various window unit parts were assembled. Materials and finishing processes matter but probably less than the window maker's reputation. Thanks to the many homeowners and professionals on this forum for providing feedback with this all-important quality. The biggest problem with most vinyl is that it expands and contracts much more than the glass parts. This can wear out the seal between frame and glass more compared to other choices. I think most vinyl windows use weep systems to handle the eventual leakage, a good thing but concerning when preventing unwanted air and water entry are two of the biggest unspoken goals when building.

My thoughts are that you should probably do some more research. You can start on this website, by searching for threads that use the terms luan, joists, flooring, subfloor, acclimatization. I would wish to become pretty educated, at least educated enough to ask smart questions of your installers. I researched the heck out of my flooring project (I'm on concrete slab), and decided to purchase the flooring from a local, extremely reputable flooring store (many excellent Yelp reviews) to have leverage so that the store AND the manufacturer are more likely to stand behind the product AND their install. They do their own install, and I requested (and got) their "A Team" installers. I had visited several stores, and what I liked about the store I chose was how patient they were with answering my many, many questions. And they went out of their way to offer me options I hadn't thought of. Like this: they mitered (is it called "picture framing?) around my raised hearth--coolio! Like this: they made sure that where the wood floor meets the tile, there is no transition strip. Like this: they commented that where we have 2 steps up to our front door, that the step was rather narrow, and they could "beef it up" quite easily, making it a wider step. And they did so for no extra charge. Like this: they include for no extra charge, moving of all the furniture out of the rooms, and then back in. Like this: I chose my new baseboards, and they accommodated my request to have no quarter round, which requires more precise cuts near the walls. And those are really just asthetic concerns. You really need to start with functional concerns, which the experts here can help you with. As much as a hassle as new floor installation is, and expensive, you want to get it done right.

I got the Nafco Permastone in Modern Slate (GroutFit) and really like living with it. My second choices, but could not find the right colors, were Amtico and Armstrong Alterna. The Alterna is a beautiful, durable tile.

For me, I would never have anything else but a vinyl tile in the kitchen for all the many reasons that have been stated before. Different style homes may dictate something else, especially newer ones, but that shall never dictate to me the ease and comfort is other than LVT.

My floor is glued.

We are going for commercial grade homogenous vinyl Tarkett Optima range 6.6' wide with matching weld joints. In dark grey or black because we have a child with severe disability who makes heaps of mess. This flooring is usually
Used in hospitals or airports so it it is supposed to b tough.

Those look like some very cool patterns. I suggest you get samples; that is what finally allowed us to choose our inlaid vinyl. You should also be able to get samples of we welds.

I had DuraCeramic (grouted) installed in 2007. They removed the old vinyl floor and put down lauan (spelling?) underlayment. So seven years later, it still looks quite good except ... there are a few tiles that have hairline cracks (not very noticeable) and some tiles have been damaged by having things dropped on them. (I dropped one of those metal, retractable measuring tapes on it the other day and it left a dent.) Also, I don't find it especially easy to clean, compared to my old vinyl floor. If you get something like black heel marks, it requires vigorous scrubbing with a scrub sponge. I think the cost was comparable to having ceramic tile installed. In spite of those negatives, I am still happy with the look and would probably do it again.

Do the groutfit lines on the permastone tile stay cleaner than regular grout, or will I still be using a toothbrush?
