Does anyone know of a regulating board or committee that mediates complaints about accountants? I'm in NY.

You might try calling the attorney general for the state of NY, and they should redirect your call, or be able to give you advice. Most accountants do have to take some type of test to become certified, so you might also check in the phone book under the state offices. Just call around and I am sure you will find the help you need.

If a profession requires certification, each year the state issues that certificate (for a fee). Usually, the certificate is legally required to be displayed in clear view at the place of business. In MI, we can go the Michigan Dept. of Consumer and Industry Services and see the current standing of members of many professions online. For builders, you can see if there are and disputes, for medical professions you can see if there have been sanctions. Find the name of the licensing board in your state and you have found the place to complain. And maybe you can check and see if this accountant is certified and has any complaints or sanctions.

Bellegallica, I'll have to report back later on Burlington and RVR's versions of Rose du Roi, since I just received the RVR version this spring. The canes and foliage do look different, but the RVR rose is so young, I can't evaluate it properly, yet. The one from Burlington repeated its bloom throughout the hottest parts of the summer (its first year) without any special pruning but did not sacrifice growth for bloom (I was too curious to remove buds). Christopher makes a good point about the other roses that are mixed up in the CdC mystery. Perhaps that original feeble, flesh colored rose has been replaced by the more attractive and stronger-growing Hybrid Perpetuals. But maybe it still exists, being sold under the names of those very roses that are being sold as CdC ...and each other. This does sound like a mystery worthy of some space in the garden. But I don't think I'll order Heirlooms 8ft tall rose that resembles Jacques Cartier and doesn't rebloom... I'll just go visit Carol, and see it in her garden!

AVOID ROGUE VALLEY ROSES, NEW MANAGEMENT DISHONEST. I've had excellent experiences with Rogue Valley Roses in the past. However, they are under new management and they just stole $32 of my money. To be precise, I ordered two roses this spring, they were healthy and grew well, but when they bloomed, it became obvious that one of them had been mislabelled - they accidentally sent the wrong rose. No big deal, just send me the right rose or refund my money. I sent three emails, got no response whatsoever, so I went to phone calls. Got a man who never gave me his name and wasn't particularly polite, made it clear he didn't really want to be bothered. He told me the company was under new management, they'd been backlogged and were struggling to catch up and would get to my issues as soon as they could. I waited a week, nothing, so I called back. Same again. Last week, after three emails and three phone calls, I told the guy I wanted my money and I wanted it within three days, no more postponements. He said, "Okay, I'll use PayPal and send you an instantaneous transfer so you can have it right this minute." I said fine. But, it's been three days and the money isn't in my account. So I called back and he said, very self righteous, "I refunded your money last week." But he didn't. I don't have the money. I even logged into PayPal to see if anything was being held in PayPal rather than put in my bank account. Looks like Rogue Valley Roses has stolen $32 of my money.

Doug, I had a friend in MD send me cuttings a couple years ago. Interestingly the USPS thought the route from MD to FL included a side trip through TX, then onto CA, then back through CO, then finally onto FL. Also apparently they consider a package staying in a sort facility for over a week part of the trip. Supposedly they lost it, but then they found it. I mention this because the little tour of the US my cuttings took, was just under three weeks. Until it was "lost" it showed the route on the tracking. amusing in a sad kind of way. And the cuttings arrived fine, a little dehydrated, but they perked back up quickly. I still have every one of them. So, I'm thinking your package might have been left in the hot sun for a good bit of time. Did you use EMS or just regular international mail? Maybe that is the difference? When I get my order, I'll take pics, see what happens. Renee

I love the tile and the peacock wallpaper! My only misgiving about that pretty tile is the grout and maintenance aspect. Will that be too much grout for you and is the mother of pearl tile too delicate a surface for your needs? The wallpaper is a winner but check the scale of the motif. The examples shown are murals. Will the peacock be whole if you order the smallest size, etc.? Also, check the size you want against canvas frame sizes before ordering to make sure it will be an easy wall art project. You don't want the wallpaper to be an inch narrower than your preferred canvas size, for example. Might be obvious but thought I'd mention it. :)

You did not say whether he is an accountant or if he is a CPA (Certified Public Accountant). There is a big difference. Basically anyone with a 2 year associate degree can be an accountant, a CPA is minimum of a bachelors degree and a Masters in most states and passing the exam and a 2 year internship. DH is a CPA in Texas and the Texas CPA board seriously examines any complaint that comes through the door. I would complain to the NJ CPA board if the guy is a CPA there.
You can check the AICPA (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants) web site and see if they can give you some advice. There web site is www.aicpa.org
It is unfortunate, but there are lame ducks in every field, so if the person is a CPA, you probably have some recourse, but if not, and there are no State guidelines on who can call themselves an accountant, you may have to talk to a lawyer.
