Gel fuel in regular fireplace?

We have a regular fireplace with chimney, masonry and metal curtains - a bit ugly really... not a very good picture taken during flooring and painting work...

I am also very allergic to smoke, and live in an area where "spare the air" days ban woodburning for much of the winter.

I would love to put in a gas insert, but it's not in the budget right now.

I thought of putting candles inside and lighting them when I feel like the ambience, but then I thought of the gel fuel and wondered - can I use it in my fireplace? How does it work, do I just open a cap and light it?

Also if this seems feasible I might consider replacing the curtains with glass doors, suggestions? I DO have a mantel shelf - staining it now!
