rerouting part of chimney flues?

We are in the process of adding a 2nd floor onto our small 1959 1-story home. The architect made a big mistake- the chimney, which goes up the center of the house, was supposed to only stick out into the upstairs hall about a foot, but when the rooms were laid out, the entire chimney is smack in the middle of the upstairs hallway. We have 2 flues, one for the oil heater, & one for the fireplace. Can we change them to make it at an angle, so we can tuck the chimney partway into one of the bathrooms? Can we use a thinner block to enclose the flues? Someone suggested converting to a gas fireplace, because the flue may be smaller, but we don't have a gas line to our house, so would have to use propane. Or another option is just to close up the chimney, & just have the fireplace for decoration, which will decrease the resale value of the home. We've contacted chimney contractors, but they either don't call us back, or can't come until next week, & our contractor wants an answer in a few days.
