painting mantel a color? yay or nay

Hi-

This is my first time here, hopefully someone can help me.

My new house has a 'great room' layout with kitchen & family room adjoined. I was thinking of painting the kitchen a light creamy yellow & the family room a darker shade of the same yellow. There is a fireplace in the family room that currently has a white wood mantelpiece. What are thoughts on painting the mantel, as well as the crown molding, the same light shade of yellow that is in the kitchen? I cannot seem to find a single photo online of a mantel that is not white, stone, brick, or marble. Is painting mantel a color a true faux pas??? I thought it would add a little something to the room...

I have seen mantles painted other colors and in most cases they look great. It's all a matter of taste. I personally think white mantle and crown moulding would look better with all that yellow. You might end up with yellow overload otherwise. There is a cd you can pick up that allows you to use a digital picture you take of your room and change the colors of walls, trim, doors, mantle etc to see what they would look like if painted a different color. You may want to try this before you invest the time and effort in painting the mantle and crown moulding.

3 boys here too...i think white beds will be perfectly fine!!!! i found out that often i'm WAY more concerned about things like that than they are/were!!! my youngest would have probably been happiest to have more BRIGHT colors throughout his room (even if they CLASHED with his very natural tigers!) oh well...his wardrobe made/makes up for it!

White is NOT "just a trend"! It's been around forever and many, many people are still doing white kitchens. Whether the OP should paint the cabinets white or another color, is the question, due to the color of the countertops and backsplash. I'd paint a large piece of pasteboard white and tape it to a cabinet door and look at it in all lighting at different times of day.

If you are talking about the fireplace screen /glass thingy (sorry don't know what you call it ) yes you can spray paint it. But you have to use a high heat paint like you use to spray grills. I did my old brass one in my game room black and it worked out great. Just make sure it is really clean before you start painting.

A small thing. Check out the height of the framed art in your inspiration pic. It’s best hung at eye level. Bring the black and white piece on the wall to the right down a bit. The piece over the couch could also be a tad lower. I generally don’t like accent walls, but I think the green livens up the room.
