am I going to regret my decision? (tile)

I am having 12x12 porcelain tile installed by my front door. The home is a 1950's ranch and I have wood floors in the living room/dining room/bedrooms. The area by the front entrance previously had slate on about an inch of cement. We took the slate out at the same time as some other remodeling, mostly getting the hardwood refinished.

Anyhow, the tile guy needed to cut out some rotted subfloor first. When he did that, he discovered my subfloor was only 1/2" thick. He is using Durock (cement board) which is screwed into the subfloor all over, especially where the joists are. He is using a thinset on top of that. He has also braced the joists from underneath with cut up 2x6's.

The tile guy has not given any indication that he thinks there will be any issues, and the advice to brace below was given to me by someone who works at a tile wholesaler. However, my Dad, who is a general contractor, seems skeptical this is going to work and thinks with such a large tile there is a high likliehood of cracking. The tile guy saw the tile before he installed it (we did not buy it from him...he said to supply whatever we want him to use) and he didn't say anything. The guy at the tile wholesaler (which is a different company from where I purchsased the tile so they don't really have a vested interest) also told me 12x12 should be fine.

So who is right? My Dad has been doing construction a long time (30 years), but thanks to the internet, we don't always see eye to eye on a lot of issues. Also, although Dad can pretty much do anything, his speciality is cabinets/counters not tile. That said, he hasn't owned his own company this long without experience.

Just curious what your opinion is. At this point, I doubt it matters. The tile went in yesterday and will be grouted tomorrow evening, and sealed Saturday morning. I guess if anything happens, we'll be having it all ripped out and put in Duraceramic instead.

I do not believe there will be any problems at all. The cement board used does not add strength only adhesion performance. Hopefully he laid the cement board into a bed of mortar and hitting the joists with the fasteners is technically incorrect. On a small area, none of it will matter In my opinion. Shoring up the substrate was smart
as it will eliminate deflection which causes grout to crack and deteriorate normally. Again, I reiterate, that cement board should be layed in a bed of mortar. If not a huge mistake, but on a smaller area, you would still have a chance. Sleep well though...you are probably just fine.

Hmm. I am looking at the original quote...

it says:
1) Cut out and replace rotted plywood subfloor 4'x4'=$75
2) Install 1/2" backer board, tile floor, grout, wash, buff and seal. 40.5 sq ft. $455.63

*Quote includes all labor and material except tile.

Of course, the adding extra support from underneath was not orginally agreed upon, so that is going to be extra, I'm not sure how much yet, but it only took him about an 1.5 hours, so hopefully not too bad. I hope that "install 1/2" backer board" includes using mortar underneath. I will ask him tonight.

I too have debated this issue. At original meeting w/PB, we had him quote the overall master plan. PB quoted with white plaster but gave us a price sheet with the upgrade-should we want to go with a differnt finish, SAM lights etc. When we got the quote back, we were surprised that the whole plan was in our budget to do as is. Now that sticker shock has worn off, what is another $1600 for quartz added to plaster, or $$3161 for sunstone colored plaster, or $4578 for aggregate finish? Unfortunately, we have other expenses, about 10k already not in the pool bid (fence, electric reroute, paver deck). Where does one stop spending when money is an object? Of coarse, my DH put it to me like this. If none of these other finishes existed, would I still love my pool? Both my neighbors have white plaster finishes (built by the PB I am using)and they are beautiful. My PB showed me photos of 14 different pools all with differnt "colors" to them. Come to find out, they were all white plaster. Depending on surrounding vegitation, cloud cover (or not) shadow/shade, sun location, can effect the color of a pool dramatically. We are going with white plaster afterall. If somewhere down the road I really hate it, I'll save up for it and get it re-done. If it is in your budget, go for it. If not, your pool will still be beautiful.

honeychurch - Your sink is gorgeous and it looks like you also have a drainboard in your countertop. I would LOVE to have that, but I've been told it would be fairly expensive to do in granite. :( My husband and I are both "double sinkers" so going with a single bowl farmhouse sink is just too much of a change for us. I also want a large bowl where I can wash cookie sheets, big pots, etc much easier than my standard double bowl sink. The sink I've been on the verge of ordering is the Elkay ELUH 3520 which has a 20 X 18 x 10 large bowl and a 16 x 11.5 x 8 smaller bowl. I'm hoping the 20 x 18 bowl will be large enough for washing large items, but I would still have the smaller bowl for rinsing, etc. To get a farmhouse sink this large I need to get the Rohl 4019 (which I LOVE) like gobruno's, but I just don't have that much in my sink budget... Do you all think the ELUH 3520 will be large enough to get some of the benefits of a single bowl sink? Funny how I'm sweating a decision over something I never even saw before a couple of years ago!

I know the trepidation you are feeling in finalizing such a big and expensive decision. The feeling of once I pull the trigger that's it I'm stuck with it good or bad. Hang in there you are doing your do diligence and Miele stands behind it's product. So if your temps are off they will adjust it no questions asked. That is my experience with them. You should also get there extended five year warranty also. They did offer the warranty free if it was over a certain price but they run that promo from time to time so check with your vendor. It does seem slow to preheat when in baking mode but convection heats faster so I will switch after it reaches temp. I don't know if somebody has done a test to see the preheat time of each brand of oven, but that would be an interesting thread to read if everybody posted the time it takes to reach 350 in different baking modes. I really enjoy using the master chef as well as my Miele steam oven, the probe roasting is great and rotisserie works fantastic.

Would I regret a marble niche or backsplash in my tiled shower/bath?

We used polished White Thassos marble in our niches (top, sides, bottom in three bathrooms, plus shelves in two baths). We also used it as border tile on our MB tub surround (but it doesn't really get wet during showers as it sits outside the shower curtain liner, and curtain itself). I sealed it all when it was installed, and that's pretty much it. I use a "sealed natural stone-safe" spray cleaner (7th Generation Disinfecting Bathroom Cleaner). I spray it on, let sit a few minutes, and buff off with a microfiber cloth. No rinsing necessary (I do try to wipe it all off, as I'm not fond of the lingering scent left behind, mostly in the corners). As far as I can tell, the WT still looks perfectly fine.

Tile guy came in last night to put grout in and I did ask him about the cement board and he used a thin layer of mortar underneath. He also said the way he layed the tile, he made sure to "stack" them so that they were very stable (I don't know what the means, but that is what he said). With the bracing from underneath and by his confidence in his answer, I don't think there will be any issue. So I guess now if Dad comes over I'll just have to say to him to shut up because its already in!

He's coming over to seal it tomorrow night. I can't wait until this project is over. It all started because I decided to re-refinish the hardwoods. Then we started taking half-walls down, moving electrical, moving cold air returns, replacing closet doors, building new shelves for the insides of closets, picking new paing, rugs & light fixtures, etc. Its been about 3 months and I'll be glad when my house is complete. The tile was about the final step.
