Refacing a Stone Fireplace

Ijust bought a home but it is only 4 years old and it has a floor to ceiling fireplace. It is a gas fireplace - but the brick is not traditional rectangular bricks. It is like river stones, stacked and pieced together with mortar. The hearth is about 1 foot off the ground, so it already starts off bad. The mantle is 3 feet off the top of the fireplace. Do I drywall over it and box it in? Oh and the mantle has like concrete blocks ???? What were they thinking? I have looked at the pics here and they are beautiful, but all I have seen are TRUE brick fireplaces, whereas mine is stone. Thanks

Personally, I like a hearth: Gets the flame closer to eye level while seated, provides extra seating in a pinch as well.

As to the mantle height, different models have different requirements. High BTUs generally mean high mantels, and the wider the mantle, the higher it has to be.

You need the make and model number so you can get your hands on an installation manual [often available on line] before you even think about making any changes.

A fortified thinset mortar will work well. However, on the edge adjoining the firebox opening, depending how you trim it, you should fill any gaps/exposed mortar with high temperature mortar. This is basically a standard mortar mix with fire clay mixed in (which is readily available).
