Stickley leather sofa : Mesh on back of cushions

I am looking at a Stickley leather sofa which seems beautifully made. But when I turned over the cushions across the back, I saw fabric, sort of a mesh, on the lower part of each cushion. I was told that this was done "so that the leather could breath;you don't want leather against leather." Has anyone heard this? Is Stickley trying to put one over on us? Has anyone bought a Stickley sofa? ( The only Stickley items I saw in the forum were wood.) Thanks.

No they are not putting one over on you. If the air in the foam could't escape, it would be like sitting on a basketball.

I understand the idea but I don't know if I have seen this feature on other leather sofas. Maybe I overlooked it, since I have just started looking. Are mesh panels standard? Thanks again.

I'm fairly new here too as a poster, but I have been lurking for over 4 years. I have owned a Stickley sofa for about 3 years now & I love it. It is very well made & still looks brand new. I am currently in the process of ordering a Lee Industries sofa & apartment sofa so I can't vouch for how it wears. I agree with Marys1000 about the fabric choices. I would find a fabric that I love & then find the sofa that fits my body the best & hope they are the same manufacturer. ;) I can't offer any help with NC stores, however, you can e/m Stickley & they will e/m you back as to where you can purchase their furniture. Thank you both for the support. The sofa I saw in the store was a similar leather to the one you linked to, postum. The cushions were a very dark paisley and I thought it look quite nice. I know I'm making this old sofa sound awful but I'm sitting here looking at it now and it's not that bad. I have a throw over it that covers the cracks in the seat cushions and throw pillows at each end. I'm just thinking that if I get a good coordinating fabric on the cushions it would eliminate the need for the throw that I'm constantly readjusting after DH has his nap.

For that reason, the cushions cannot be flipped around like they can in fabric."

Most manufactures have done away with the elastic retainer strap and clips (they were for seats only, never backs). The reason is they frequently got ripped out and were an added cost to install. Today's leather furniture comes with Velcro on the backs and that keeps back cores in place, but that's not generally done on textile units. It could be added on request, but then you could not reverse the cushions once you do that. Duane Collie, Owner of The Keeping Room

Ah! Tell me, are you pleased with the Stickley quality? Would you buy that brand again? How long have you had that sofa? Even though your sofa is fabric covered, you probably have some thoughts to share. I always associated Stickly with mission style furniture and was surprised to be shown some beautiful upholstery and leather pieces. Thanks for your help.

You should see this on any leather sofa where the seats are loose and can be removed. Sometimes it may just be a cloth panel on the back where the zipper is. It is not a feature on attached seats, but then they have no bottom or back.

I have no complaints about our Stickley upholstered sofa (it's a sofa bed...) and the leather Morris chairs are great too!

We have a good quality leather sofa from Room & Board that has a meshy fabric on the back of the cushions. I guess the only drawback is that you can't turn the cushions around for even wear.

Thanks, david gf, western and mcgillicuddy--I feel better knowing that mesh can be a normal part of a good leather sofa. Out today looking again--this is a big investment!

I bought a Stickley mission bedroom set. LOVE LOVE LOVE the look and the quality! My dresser is solid enough to hold a Buick!

but where in your area did you purchase the Morris.
Was the leather done beautifully?? Recently moved
To PA from Manhattan and I bit lost for shopping
and need to start library. Was your sofa also
leather?
Appreciate this intrusion so much. Love Stickley
in NYC and have had fabulous service and furniture.
