kid friendly furniture

I would love to get some feedback on this as my head is spinning with all the options! We are finally ready to replace our old furniture with something nice that will last.

Our kids are 7 and 11, so not very young, but we do host a lot of playdates and kids come and go all the time. I'm debating whether to buy a dining set from World Market for $1000. It is solid rubberwood with veneers (the one I like, of course, had to be the one with veneers), affordable, styling is nice but not perfect. On the other hand, I love the look of Scandinavian furniture. There is a company called Skovby that makes this furniture in Denmark. Their tables are very functional and suit my "style" BUT they cost more than double! I believe the ones I like are mostly veneers, but they are designed so nicely. The leaves are built in and "pop up" so they are easy to use. given the way we use our table and the number of people we host regularly, this would be a well-used function. The Cost plus table has an extension leaf, but it was a pain to use so I'm not sure I would be using it on a regular basis. We are the sort who keeps things until they die or become unbearable, so I want to get something I really like :)

Then there is this one, which I don't love but I could certainly live with, and it costs a LOT less:

Since we do have kids, do you think it would be risky to invest in a more expensive table? Would veneers scratch easily? How can we protect it?

Also, have you seen that functional and contemporary styling in a wooden product? I have gone through several conventional showrooms and haven't found anything appealing to my taste.
