Bleach Stain on Carpet - Ughh!

Hi - I dropped some Tilex on my hallway carpet and now I have a bleach mark about the size of a silver dollar. The carpet is a taupe/beige color. I called a few carpet places, but it seems that no one wants to fix this kind of issue anymore. Can anyone recommend what I should do? I do not want to replace the carpet as it is fairly new. It also cannot be pieced as it is located on the stair landing. thanks.

It's not a stain. It's bleached, to it can't be fixed only replaced. Sorry.

I have bookmarked a website that does carpet dyeing for the inevitable time that I'll need it for myself. They do whole carpet color and also custom colors. I have a link below to a page that shows some before and after of bleach spots they fixed. Not perfect, but it beats completely replacing the carpet.

I have never used this business, I don't know them, I just bookmarked the site, so do your own due dilligence on them.

Here is how I have dealt with a similar situation. The POs were covering up damage on oak hardwoods with area rugs. I am guessing that in addition to their petÂs accidents, they shampooed the area rug in place which further damaged the floors. We found out about the damage two hours before closing on the house during the final walk-through. This is a very temporary solution and is not the correct way to fix the damage; the experts on this board can advise you how to do that. Wash the floor on your hands and knees (or sitting on the floor using a small amount of water, MurphyÂs oil soap, scrub brushes, scrubbies, and old terry towels- whatever it takes to clean the floor. Do a small section at a time, and rinse with clear water using a clean towel and dry each section thoroughly as you go along. Be careful with the waterÂdonÂt pour it onÂyou donÂt want to cause more damage than is already there. This will take a long time as you will be crawling around the floor. With a damp sponge mop using water and vinegar, rinse again. Remember while you need the water to clean the floor, water also damages the floor. DonÂt let pooling water sit on the floor. Dry it with a towel. On the stains you can try several things to at least lighten the color of the damaged spots. I used a combo of lightly sanding and household bleach. The stains have not disappeared, but they are lighter and cleaner. Wait till the next day or several hours to be sure the floor is completely dry and temporarily fill in the spots where the poly is gone due to damage of pet stains, water and sanding/bleaching by judiciously using a small amount of wipe-on-poly. Wipe-on-poly is for furniture and is not recommended for floors, but a small amount can fill in and blend the areas where the floor poly is completely gone. After the poly is completely dry, use a shine product. I used Holloway House Quick Shine for about $9.00 (Orange Glow does not work). I have added a few throw rugs and the floor looks about 50% better and will get me buy until I can have the floors refinished.

We had commercial carpet tile installed in the "public" areas of our house. It's a modern house and I like the look (and the recyclability) of it. This is the same stuff they put in airports and shopping malls and it handles years of heavy foot traffic, slush, spills, wheeled carts of all sizes and abilities, etc. It won't stand up to, say, bleach or strong acids and bases -- but no carpet will. The place that supplied ours told me they have the contract for the international airport near here and that the same carpet lasts 8-10 years there, so getting 15+ years out of it in a residential setting should be no problem. You can help yourself by making sure there are walk-off mats by entrances, etc. But it's tough stuff. Aside from its toughness, though, it's also possible to actually pick up a tile and clean it (rather than clean it on-site) or, if the very worst happens, to replace it, rather than ruin yards of carpeting. Some patterns are less obviously tile-like than others; it's always a matter of esthetics. But it might be worth checking out.

The only carpet fiber you can use bleach on is olefin. If you have nylon, you screwed up.

This coffee stain has stayed for a couple of months, and now I just thought of using bleach to bleach the carpet with 1:3 ratio. For some reason, it's not lightening up yet getting darker..... What can I do now?

I did the same thing only I overshot from the counter onto the carpet. Do you have a closet that has the same carpet in it? I cut the circle out, cut a fresh piece out of the closet slipped a square of double sided carpet tape to the pad & pressed the piece into it. No one could tell, it was there for six years before the carpet was replaced.

Thanks for your idea KAT, but I think cuting out a new piece and pressing it in with double back tape would be noticeable. First off, the stain is in a high traffic area (right at the top of the steps); secondly, the new piece of carpet would be a slightly different color since it has never been tread on and it would not be matted down like the existing area. I did finaly locate a carpet dye man who would be willing to take care of the entire job for $125. I have to send him sample of the carpet to ensure that it is nylon because only nylon will dye according to him.

I did this with Tilex too...had just moved into a new apartment with brand new carpet. UGH! It was in a high-traffic area too.

I called around and found a carpet place that would dye it, and would come back for no cost if it faded. I think it ran around $100 (but this was in 1997). The carpet dye guys said that bleach products are very difficult to stain as they fade with time. The spot looked perfect for the year that I was there, though it did fade a little at the end. I had them re-dye it right before I moved out.

I would have it dyed and try and get someone to guarentee the job and come back if is fades, especially since it is a high-traffic area.

The carpet can be perfectly restored by a carpet dyeing professional. Just do a Google search for 'carpet dyeing' and you will find a professional dye technician in your area. A dye technician can perfectly match the bleached area with the surrounding carpet, and the repairs are guaranteed permanent for the life of the carpet. DO NOT CUT OUT THE DAMAGED SECTION to patch it as the patched area will most likely not match the surrounding carpet, and you will always have a visible seam around the patch.

On stairs you can just replace one step, just make sure an eletric stapler is used to keep it from comeing loose. Or use carpet dye sticks for bleach stain carpet
