Whoa! Brand new wood floors, Day 3: Scratches: 84098503498503485

Hi there! I just moved into my new build home that I had Natural Pecan Capella Engineered hardwood floor installed ( I didn't really have an option to not have engineered for the color I Liked.. builder didn't have many options..). Anyway, we JUST moved in, and there are already scratches EVERYWHERE. MY dad scooted a mattress across the kitchen by accident and one of the corners created a scratch that is across the entire kitchen. There are more in the hallway. Big, long, scratches.

I was prepared (kinda ;), for lots of little scratches, but not these big ones that your eyes sort of follow if the lighting is right.

Is there any quick fix? I'm just trying to get the big ones out as the light hits them just right all day long... ugh. I know i'm going to have to spend some $$ but thats fine, I'm just chalking it up as a moving expense mentally, lol.

Any tips, advice welcome.... especially if they revolve around preventing scratching or how to clean these damn floors!

We had a similar situation happen when we moved into our new home. The movers put a 54in scratch into our new hardwood floor dragging the piano down the hallway. Their mistake but it required pulling up the whole floor and putting down a new section.

You have a very good floor plus it is ~40% harder than oak. The floor you have is a sliced engineered, a superior method of manufacture.
I imagine your Dad drug the mattress on edge with the heavy metal frame compressing the wood or if the box springs, a staple, nail or two causing the damage.

The best cure we use is to replace the boards damaged. You could try using epoxy to fill the scratches and finish with matching sheen professional products but that is very difficult even for the pros.

I am not happy with my so called hickory Casabella hardwood floor either. It was professionally installed in kitchen and dining room. Slivers are coming off of the edges of several boards. I saw a few the day of installation and the owner of the floor and carpet store came over the next day. He thought it could have been a problem with a tool used in installation since it was limited to a few spots on boards that went down first. He ordered a Minwax stain pen which hid it. We have walked on the floor without shoes for about 4 months. Several other splinters are coming up and there are other areas where the stain is either coming off or it was due to more splinters. To be honest I am not sure there is much hardwood in the top 1mm of so called hickory engineered floor that is 3/8” think. We clean with bona and a their mop pads.

Hello Everyone! So yes, the supervisor came. He basically told me that of all 10 groupings of scratches only one set was really attributable to his guys. I told him I had a zero deductible on claims through my moving company and I was only asking them to repair what they did. Reluctantly he looked at all the scratches and told me to send him a quote. But he certainly did not believe his guys made the scratches. Why would I bother calling Verizon and go through all the BS if they did not do it! Well my floor guy came today and is coming back next week with a quote to fix the scratches which he said would be fine to fix and would not be costly! Thank goodness because I cannot stand anymore people coming in and out the house! Needless to say I bought a box of booties today on amazon!

Wow! Just came across this thread. We have Marazzi Chateau Reserve hickory grove and same happened with our grout. I chose a grout that would blend in with tile and also chose this tile bc I wanted a very thin grout line. I have tried everything- tile brush , steam mop. Our contractor didn’t care. I will Reread this thread and try some of the options mentioned. Our tile looks great but the grout drives me crazy. It just looks dirty since it’s a lighter color. Makes me angry when I see it bc I would have never picked such a light color. Luckily - it’s only in our master bath. It’s a shame some contractors are so unscrupulous. I know there are honest ones out there, too bad we didn’t hire one .

OP - I'm no pro, but I don't think you need to worry all that much about furniture and certainly not about art clashing with those floors. I probably wouldn't put something really light like birch with them, but I don't think you really need to be limited by the floors. With my spotted gum floors, which had a fair bit of variation and a reddish tinge, I had a mix of Danish teak, blackwood (very similar to the teak), a dark walnut piece and an antique mahogany china cabinet: they all seemed to live quite happily with the floor. Area rugs also change the dynamics and create some separation between floor and furniture. As for art, buy art you love - it doesn't need to match anything, and certainly not the floors!

I believe the scratch is in the finish, not the hardwood. I believe, sincerely, such is what comes with a hardwood. We sell a lot of hardwood, and finish marks is part of owning hardwood flooring. If its an active household, you will have finish abrasions. If you do not want to notice them, bur a distressed styled floor, or just don't look at the floor with a glare on it as those abrasions will show up. I see it a Lot...a lot....a lot......people complain all the time...

I agree...you have a factory-built hardwood flooring product that is given a furniture top finish look...you are going to see surface marring on such a beast no matter what the surface finish material.
