How to install mantle wood on rock fireplace

bluestarrgallery

we just bought a home with a fireplace which is rock faced but there isn't a mantle. I bought a piece of wood to use as a free floating mantle. The wood I bought at the lumber mill is 4 in x 10 in x 5 foot long which makes it about 3.75 x 9.75 inches after the kiln drying. My carpenter is sanding the wood and staining it.

Attached is a photo of the living room with the corner fireplace. It looks like something was previously installed as a mantle because I can see some small holes which have been patched about two foot above the fireplace opening across the width of the rock about six inches apart.

Any ideas on installing the wood mantle?

thanks so much for your help.
