Food prices are up after xmas.....

Are food prices up at your grocery stores? I went shopping today, and food prices were noticeably higher than they were last month. I even dug through the block cheese because there were still some chunks labeled at $3.99/lb and all the rest were $5.00/lb or more. OJ was up considerably as well, and several other items were more expensive than usual.

Didn't see any change today...OJ(tropicana) was on sale 2 for 5.00...Still saw many good deals at grocery store,and it is the beginning of the can-can sale,:)

I seldom pay any attention to the price of things, since I usually only buy (stock up) on whatever is on special, with the exception of bread and milk.

This weeks specials....
Store brand (Kroger) OJ-$3.79 1 GA
Large eggs $1.19
Boneless pork sirloin chops $1.69 lb
Bananas-48 cents
Store brand bacon $2 lb

I'm just now using up the last of the $2 LB shredded cheese I stocked up on in 2007. At that price I bought quite a bit and froze it.

I've put up about 6 months worth of food so far this season, between canning, freezing and dried beans & rice. Tons of tomatoes ripening in my dining room and at least 20 pounds in the freezer for making sauce, plus lots of berries in the freeze waiting for me to make jam. Not too shabby for a noob canner, lol! This week two of my local stores are offering turkeys at $0.27/lb. w/$25 purchase. I now have 4 large turkeys thawing in heavy coolers (w/ice) on my back porch. Once they are thawed, some of the breasts will be roasted and sliced for sandwiches (then frozen), and the rest of the meat canned for quickie soups/casseroles later. The bones will ve made into stock, which will be canned. Nothing is wasted. Such a deal, yay!!! Another local store is having a "Black Friday" sale, and pork shoulders are $0.69/lb. I'll be stocking up on those for sausage - everyone seems to be counting on receiving a stock of sausage at Christmas time. I also can the leaner parts of the pork roasts. On busy nights, a family favorite is Pantry Burritos: a jar of pork, a jar of home-canned beans, Annie's Salsa and some cheese and we've got 'fast food' worth eating. :-) Some of my family/friends think I've gone just a bit off my rocker, lol. While I don't consider canning to be "fun" exactly (more like a messy laborious PITA at times) I feel such a deep sense of satisfaction when I see those jars cooling on the counter and lining the shelves in my basement pantry room. It's hard to explain to those who don't "get it", but one of the best things about this forum in knowing that there's no need to explain it at all!

What a nice Santa he is, Karen-- (I'm still laughing at Jim's tax deduction comment...). 37 inches tall-- WOW-- now that's a lot of Santa per square inch for your money. :) I'm sorry to hear so many folks had to deal with Scrooges for Christmas... Why people can't manage to just suck it up and be NICE for a holiday-- ONE DAY-- but instead need to act out whatever issues they've had going for the rest of the year, well, I just don't understand it. But unfortunately it seems the way the holidays go. Me, I find I spend much of my time on holiday damage control, heading off moods. So I understand. :) --Jenn

Teresa, my DH feels the same way about asparagus. Canarybird, that is pretty much what my asparagus plate looked like except they served the hollandaise sauce on the side and I had a bit of fish rather than ham. German beer is good but I try to keep alcohol minimal when I'm crossing that many time zones to help my body deal with jet lag. I did pour myself a tiny glass in the Luftanse lounge. My employer flies me business class overseas so I can count on reasonably satisfying food service on the flight. Shelly, I enjoy my work so that's not a problem. I was here years ago on vacation. Yes, Jessy - I'm in Israel now but I arrived after Independence day. I was in Israel once years ago for Memorial and Independence days and it is quite a transition - even when it isn't the 60th. And you are correct - we landed at 3 AM in Tel Aviv, not Eilat. My trip isn't related to the celebrations. It's a technical meeting. I've never had a meeting where there was this much food - it's like a cruise ship - oh no! it's time to eat again. But the food is great. I forgot to mention some unusual (at least in my experience) items on the menu at the grill where we ate the first night. With jet lag, we weren't feeling adventurous enough to try them. Tonsils (the source wasn't mentioned, do you think those would be beef?) and turkey testicles. I've complained before about the bad coffee and tea usually served at hotels for meeting breaks - well at this meeting they have an espresso machine and a hotel staff member or two turn out yummy cappuccinos and espressos for any who want them. And there is a good hot water dispenser with hot enough water for tea all day. At afternoon break yesterday, there was fresh watermelon juice - I'd never had that before, it was cool, sweet and a bit foamy on top - and watermelon and a green melon in slices. There was some other food but I was feeling pretty full and didn't indulge. Last evening our host provided a social - a Bedouin dinner. A bus took us to a camel ranch in the desert with a tent set up for traditional Bedouin dining. Rugs cover the ground, the tent canopy is open on one side and the other sides can be raised for ventilation; low tables and cushions for dining. I've been to these a couple of times before - dinner at this one wasn't as authentic Bedouin as the first one I went to. As I understand, a more traditional Bedouin diet would be mainly easily transportable foods - a dish of couscous or rice with meat (typically lamb) and flat bread. One tears pieces off the flat bread to use to pick up the food instead of using utensils. The dinner we had last night accommodated the vegetarians in our group better than a traditional Bedouin menu. Dinner last night started with Israeli salads, Bedouin flat bread and other breads. After that came lamb on rice, chicken on couscous and some kind of seasoned beef patty. After dinner, drums were set out on the carpet so we could get a lesson in drumming - which proved that not all of us have a sense of rhythm.

My best after Christmas sale was *before* Christmas! I have been looking for teal or aqua wine glasses for a friend who uses teal/aqua/silver for his Christmas colors. Two days before Christmas I was at Macy's in the fine China/glassware department, and picked up one lone wine glass with aqua tint at the base of the 'bowl'. I asked an associate if there could quite possibly be any more, and he said he would go check in the back. They were $15 per glass and I wanted at least 12~he assured me they were at least 25% off. He was getting ready to leave for the day, but ran in the back and said they were on the very first shelf in the backroom, and counting the one in my hand, that would make 12. He had another associate bring them out, and I said, since that's all of them, maybe i'll get a special Christmas price. When the woman was finished ringing up all 12 she hit total, and said to me, 'that can't be right, it's only $38.' The male associate who was still there, took one of the glasses and put it under the scanner and it came up at $2.50. Several other customers who were in the department heard me squeal with delight over my fantastic purchase and immediately asked if there were any more. The lady associate asked me if I wanted the footed water glasses that were also $15 regular price and I asked how many there were. When she told me there were 16 I said I would take them all! LOL Needless to say I made a friend extremely happy! By the way, the glassware was Lenox, and I think they may have come with an amber tint on the bottom. I'm going back tomorrow and if so, will be getting those for ME!

Not at all.
DH and I were there yesterday, and even he commented on how decent the prices were.

Most grocery stores are hopping on the "in store" specials bandwagon in a big way. What's consistently up seems to be bread and bakery products - a decent loaf of bread here runs between $2.99 and $3.29. Although I'm not a consistent coupon slipper and don't particularly have to watch pennies, the flyers from the major local chain tends to have quite a few coupons that are worth clipping - 5 12oz. cans of frozen store brand (actually as good as Minute Maid) OJ, free dozen eggs with a $10 purchase, etc. etc. The national coupons that come in the Sunday paper are usually for stuff I wouldn't buy anyway - so that's a savings as far as I'm concerned.

My biggest thing is making food purchases that don't go to waste. Stock up on things when a good bargain appears - sure. But I buy those things that I know will be consumed at a meal then added to augment other meals and not tossed into the can on trash day.

We went shopping yesterday & I didn't notice any significant differences. We only bought a few things, though. We have a Sunbeam thrift store here. I've started buying my bread there. The Nature's Own that's $3.20 - $3.50 in the grocery store is $0.90 there. The "best by" date on it may be the day before it's delivered to the thrift store, but it's still plenty fresh. I have several friends who also buy there.

Yup, I did noticed that some food prices are up here at Ingles. For example, I used to get two bags of Dortis chips (for DH) at $6.00. Now it is 2 for $7.00 so I only got one. I used to get food for the month, but now I am trying out only weekly food shopping. I have started drawing up a weekly menu plans for dinner as well as DS's snack/lunch menu plans. Then I make list of things needed from the menu to reduce items to buy. For this week, I paid 57.00 (I bought some marked down items - 1/2 gal Vit. D organic milk for .99 -it was to sell by Jan 6, but I knew it would be used up before that. I got 2). We will see how it works after I test this method for 2 months.

I forgot to mention, the price also included some stuff to make breakfasts for the week. It seems that prices for some sausage brands have gone up a bit.

I think food prices traditionally go up in January. There usually isn't a lot in the sales papers that I'm interested in buying. Fortunately, I have a lot of food left over from Christmas that I froze into meal size portions.
