Insulating Around Direct Vent Fireplace
Comments (2)Insulate the exterior wall with mineral wool (Roxul) and not the firebox unless the manufacturer's instructions say that is allowed. Read the instructions very carefully and observe all clearances to combustibles at the firebox and the flue/vent. Use those instructions or call the manufacturer rather than relying on internet information. All factory-built fireplaces are required to be tested by the manufacturer so their installation instructions can differ quite a bit. General information from elsewhere would be dangerous to use which is probably why it is not easy to find....See MoreMantels for Fireplace Xtrordinair 44 Elite?
Comments (0)We're building a new home and will have a Fireplace Xtrordinair 44 Elite wood-burning fireplace. The biggest challenge seems to be finding a traditional-style mantel with side columns (other than Grand Mantel) that's acceptable for use with this fireplace. The clearance requirements in the installation manual seem so extreme that none of the other brands (J.C. Huffman, Pearl, etc.) appear acceptable. The toughest requirement is, "Mantel side columns that protrude more than 3/4" must maintain an 18 inch clearance from the faceplate." Basically that drives you to a mantel that's about 8 feet long if you want side columns, and we don't have that kind of room. Even the stone mantels won't work because they exceed the tolerances. Has anyone else had luck finding a mantel (other than Grand Mantel) that works with this fireplace? (And does anyone know what it is that enables Grand Mantel to be certified, since they don't appear to meet the dimension requirements?) Thanks!...See MoreHeatilator or FireplaceXtrordinair?

Comments (8)We got this one: Town and Country " GDV42" gas burning fireplace. The quote is for 5k installed. It is not in yet. We chose it because we liked the looks of the flames the best. When it is on, it looks very real. We have three other real fpl in the house, this is in our most formal room and i wanted it to be easy. One thing I noticed is that they look most fake when they are off and you can see the glass. A good trick is to buy a nice, large fireplace screen (I found an old beehive one) to keep in front of it, so that when it is off you dont see shiny glass.... I also recall that some burned tooooo hot. Never occurred to me they could be too hot, but the guy said if you want only supplemental heat, make sure you get one that has good flames even on low....See MoreLutha
