Smokes when burning

Our home is about 3 years old and when we burn a fire it smells smoky to a certain extent and the next morning the house still smells that way. It's wood burning. Is it because our house is too tight?? That seems to defeat the purpose to open a door when we are trying to heat the home? Another thought was we have a fireplace in our basement, right below it. They are 2 separate chimneys, however the one upstairs that we use mostly has a little bend in the chimney because he had to go around the piping for the one below...could that create a problem??
