When should my unkillable smoke bush start to grow?
Comments (7)I absolutely considered myself a zone 5, but coming south 10 miles has made a big difference. ==>>> you moved from a semi-rural area .. to the city.. big time.. my personal theory is based on jonie mitchel .. as in paved paradise.. and put in a blacktop .... IMHO .. uneducated.. or i should say.. un-researched ... is that pavement.. cement/blacktop heats and retains heat.. all winter long ...... holding it long into the night .....and especially in spring.. giving you that little extra warmth .. at night .. after all.. zone is basically MIN winter temps ... and that is why.. i might get a freeze.. and you might miss a light frost .... its all about.. IMHO.. how much pavement the city has .. as compared to my endless miles of bare dirt .... [not to mention wind swept.. compared to your houses being 10 feet apart.. etc ...] i am rural down here between adrian and tecumseh .... and it never fails to amaze me.. is that my forsythia.... bloom a week or two later than the ones in that podunk miniscule town of Tecumseh ... 3 miles away ... what else could it be??? ken...See MoreGT 235 Engine Problems--Black Smoke, White Smoke
Comments (3)Walt: Thanks for the quick response. I actually thought that, even though I'm very careful with how much oil I add, I might have added a bit too much since this problem just started with the last oil change. I drained some oil from the engine, started it, and voila! it sounded great...no smoke and very solid running. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed, but I guess these engines are a bit more susceptible to too much oil than I thought. Like I said, I try to be very careful, but maybe this time I just got a bit too much in there. Anyway, thanks for the quick response and take care!...See MoreNoob Mistakes (You made when you first started growing Hoyas)
Comments (32)I really enjoyed reading this post! I'm probably guilty of buying ALL THE PLANTZ!! I started with a couple then a few more... Because I'm lucky to find so many different types in my area at reasonable prices I take risks in buying ones that may or may not do well here. I figure it's worth the risk. I had no idea how lucky I am to find such a variety, but it's rare to find a big established plant. Although I just passed on a 5 foot (on trellis) multi flowering carnosa because I couldn't fit it in the car... I have a couple of Graveyard hoyas, most I've replaced and trying again. (Or will if I find another one for sale) I don't think I'll get another lauterbachii again even though they turn up all the time. Mine grew fast and tall but died. Not sure if it was underwatering or the cold but as I since found out it grows huge with next to no chance of me ever seeing flowers here I really cant be bothered buying it again. Since joining this group and learning "if in doubt, unpot and check roots and/or chop" I haven't lost many plants, except poor polyneura that got cooked in the last heatwave :( (I bought a new one in case my cuttings didn't take but they did!)...See MoreSmoke Coming Out of New Floodlights
Comments (3)I'm going with: 1- moisture. the "smoke" you saw was steam. 2- dust. the floodlights sat on a shelf for a while, and had dust on them. the heat from the lamps is causing the dust to burn off. 3- cheap paint on the lampholders. Neither of the 3 is a huge issue....See Moreyungman
