'B' birthday party for boy's 5th b-day

My DS's 5th b-day is in a few weeks. I didn't want any type of character themed party. Somehow, maybe it was watching the end of Sesame Street one morning, I came up with the idea of having a "B" party. You know, something like "Nathan's Big Boy Birthday Bash." The child loves balloons, balls, bubbles, boats, bugs, butterflies, bumblebees, and books so I thought it might be fun. As the date approaches, I feel like I'm getting stuck. I need to do the invitations ASAP. Maybe shape the invite in the letter B and write the details on that? I wonder if I can find a B online and print it. Any other idea on where or how to get a B?

I think I'll be good on the food aspect. I can think of a hundred things to make for the adults and the kids that start wtih B. Games will be baseball, bubbles, and maybe backwards croquet??? ;) DS decided he wants a banana cake in the shape of a bumblebee so I'll have to get a mold or do some fancy cake carving.

Any other creative ideas? TIA!

Love the theme!
How about a B scavenger hunt? A list of things to find that start with the letter B - bug, ball, bandana, broom, bracelet, butterfly, bell, book, etc... Have a picture next to the word for kids that aren't strong readers.

While they're sitting waiting for food/cake, give them B themed coloring sheets.

A cake in the shape of the letter B with some icing bees on it might be easier than a bumble bee cake.

I expected it to be "Bobby's Big Boy Birthday Bash"! :)

It's a VERY cool idea! and it sounds like you have it well planned already.

On the banana "bumblebee" cake (also a great idea!), I would consider using two round pans of different sizes. The larger round would be the body and the smaller round his head. I'd try making some waxed paper wings to tuck at the base of his head -- might need to glue or tape a little veining or support pieces to hold it in the cake. I think it would work! I can certainly envision it. lol!

Yes, I know its abit late now but here's some ideas for next year, and for your present giving, I thought alot of the ideas where great previously by the way. Get the e-mail addresses of the parents who children you want to invite, and send a e-invatition, ask them to e-mail the reply. yes electricity, but no paper or fuel in postage and no hassel. wrapping presents, use newpaper, old magizines, they are going to rip it any way, paper bags, for some reason my state you have to have your wine in brown paper? like no ones going to guess what you just brought! or if you have fast food for some reason, save these for wrapping but get your children to decorate them, at the age they are, people think it really cute, make cards out of old paper and pictures in mags, get your kids to make papier mache plant pots and decorate them, if for an adult, stick in a packet of seeds you know they like and if a child, a couple of seeds could be a bean, pea, nesturtium, radish something that shows a result quickly, and some planting medium in a bag, the bags I use are the ones manufacturered bread comes in! Party Favours same thing as presents except you could present something growing athough maybe difficult in October, I am sure someone will come up with an idea, all I can think of is lettice and even my veggie loving children won't eat that! and brussel sprouts just too big, haha!, keep the party simple, my boys love picnics and love indoor picnics even more, I actually produce a more authentic picnic indoors than out, cos I don't have too lug the picnic basket around! rug on floor etc, old fashioned games such as pass the parsell, wrapped in newspaper easy to rig so every child wins a prize, prizes well, I just keep the merriad of rubbish my boys have accumilated over the year in favors, which they examine and then discard, currently I have 9 pensils, 6 mini tubs of playdough, 10 erasers, 6 flying discs and 1 tub of assorted beads from frendship braclets. once you start looking for ways to reuse stuff it becomes easier and easier, your brain just seems to make new connections you will find yourself hovering over the trash can with a used item, thinking, I wonder! today our washing machine died a death, repair man could repair but only if we where prepared to spend $600+ we brought a new one for $420 and on looking at our old machine, I kept saying could it be a composer, husband (who is not a natural recycler but buys second hand most the time and is a great bargin hunter) could it be a fire pit, get away says I! look on the garden forums and sure enough people have used old washing machines for both these purposes, so yes! if I was really really green I would have had it repaired (well I would probably have a wash board and Mangle) but I live in the real world and needs must but there can ways to do it. BTW paper mache pots can be planted straight in the ground and decompose, but I would only do this if decorated for flowers not food! last but by no means least, don't force you ideals on any one by asking them for green toys and paper, it will only get backs up, for example do not judge them, just as you should not expect to be judged for your decisions, it was my birthday the other day and ony one person asked what I wanted, a watering can, okay I expected a big cheepo one and recieved a dinky red posh one, put it does the job and looks pretty, I also got cut flowers which have lasted very well, 3 weeks and counting and as they die off, into the compost they go, a huge scented cantle which is now in the energancy draw for power cuts etc, the pretty cardboard tub it came in will become something to keep sewing bits in or I will put someones gift into, the bags other gifts came in have been squirelled away for rewraping presents for others, and the wrapping paper is in my boys craft box, the Best buy Voucher...oh I used that today towards a new washing machine! Grurr! Been thinking about the golf themed birthday party, here's somethings I remember from looking at some of the sites and some others I came up with: 1) Cover the table with a green paper or plastic cover (for that grass effect); 2) Find a picture of the boyfriend playing golf, find some old golf magazines, etc. and cut out pictures of famous players. Go to a photocopy store, cut, paste & photocopy the picture(s) of the boyfriend & famous players so it appears he had been playing golf with them. You could do individual pictures or make one large poster board with several of them on it; 3) Fill a jar with golf tees and have the guests guess how many are in the jar and give a prize for the closest guess; 4) Make flags like they use in the holes (large or small) maybe made with tooth picks to be used in the food; 5) Find some of those candle holders you find at craft stores where you can put a candle in the center of the holder and then fill the outer rim with golf balls or golf tees; 6) Saw a miniture golf bag cooler on one of the sites I mentioned, could use that as a centerpiece. Fill it part of the way with tissue paper then use some of that green Easter grass and place some golf balls on top of that and around the bottom of the bag; 7) Could have your local grocery store or bakery make a golf themed cake; 8) Get a couple of those topiary forms from the craft store, maybe one that already is set up in a pot, then hot glue golf balls on the top, fill the pot with that Easter grass, tie a couple of green and white ribbons on it. Thanks for all the birthday wishes! It was a fabulous day in the end. Really close friends who moved 3.5 hours away last summer came up and then there was a small catered surprise party. I figured out the surprise shortly before the part but it was still fabulous. DH chose food really well even given my food snobbery and I did not have to plan or clean a thing. When we got home Dh told me our friend was going to stay at our house with her 3 children, my 2 children and her dog while we went and stayed in their condo at a ski resort. The weather was gorgeous and even though I don't ski it was the best. We just enjoyed each other. Annie, the chicken mortality was completely out fault as we did not close up their run one night and a hungry, we think fox, had a feast. The boys learned about the food chain a little better and the parents learned not to be so stupid and trusting. A fox in the city, who knew? That weekend we went to a local Easter egg thing and the boys told the person in a chicken suit to watch out for foxes. -Robin

I'd suggest having it at home also. Once you get started on these toddler parties, you end up being invited to every one and you have to buy a present too. It gets expensive very quickly. Could you possibly temporarily remove furniture from maybe the living room, dining room or child's bedroom to make more room? I think an indoor camping theme might be fun (without the sleepover). You could make tents out of sheets and blankets and have the kids play in there. Any other theme you might have going, like bugs or Elmo could be worked into it too. You could have hot chocolate and other appropriate foods. Fake foliage and stuffed animals could be used to dress up the area. I'm suggesting this because someone gave my two boys a play tent for Christmas and they love it. They'll take toys in there sometimes and play instead of running around the house. Have fun with whatever you do.

Amazing....I went to a "bee" themed birthday party for a 4 year old on sunday! LOL!
The mom made the cake out of one of those pudding cake mixes, baked 2 layers and froze them. and while they were frozen shaped them into a sort of dome shaped bee body. She then filled it with some yellow tinted butter cream ( from a can she said!) made stripes with some black frosting also from a can...and used licorise sticks for antennae and some sort of other candy for the eyes.
This was a little girl's party so they made bee costumes out of paper bags and wore bee hats with antennae and played pollinate the flowers and gather nectar. some kids were flowers with a paper flower lei and others were bees and it was a chase game!

What about doing the letter B but also a color theme? Maybe Blue and Black?? You could find a cute banner on etsy I bet. I found some really cute party decorations for my daughters puppy themed party on there.

Well, the party was a success so I thought I'd share the results after your thoughtful replies.

Invitation:
Cut out a large letter B from paper printed with balloons. I randomly wrote on the front B=Ball, B=Balloon, B=Book, B=Bubbles, B=Bugs. Then I wrote the party details for the Big Boy Birthday Bash on the other side, including that this was a "B" themed party.

Food: (I was cooking for about 43 adults and kids.)
Beefy Ribs and (Buns with Hotdogs for the kids)
Brown Rice and Chickpea Rainbow Salad (GREAT pesto vngrte)
Beans with Lemon and Walnut Vngrte
Bacon and Blue Cheese Mashed Potato Casserole
Biscuits with fresh herbs and Basil Butter

Drinks:
Basil lemonade
Blueberry lemonade

Cake:
Banana cake in the shape of a bumblebee. I found a baseball cake pan the shape of half of a ball and thought "why not make that the body of the bee?" So I did. I used a 6" round cake for the head, but I cut it out a bit to fit snuggly into the round body cake piece. I frosted it with golden yellow buttercream. I was in a hurry so instead of mixing black icing for the bee's stripes, I sprinkled on brown jimmies in stripes. I used black licorice for the antenna and legs. I made wax paper wings with popsicle sticks as veins. I found those black licorce wheels as big eyes. It was so cute!! And tasty! Since I needed cake for 43 people, I made some extra banana cupcakes frosted with the bee frosting and some jimmies.

Games:
Balls (football, baseball, tennis balls, curvy ball and catchers, bouncy balls, soccer ball, beach ball, etc.)
Bubbles (FIL makes his own bubble juice and has tons of fun wands)
Butterfly pinata (couldn't find a bumblebee) filled with small bouncy balls, bee rings, etc.

Treat bags:
Black Bags filled with small "B" items like bubbles, ball erasers, blowers, etc.

Decorated the house and deck with tons of balloons from the Dollar Store. Some of the gifts given to DS began with B, and some even decorated their gift bags and cards with B. It was cute to see people get into the theme.

All in all, it was a great party. Kids had a fabulous time--too much of a good time at moments. ;)
