trsinc and I did a book "swap". I sent her a copy of Prevention's Diabetic Cookbook, hoping she could use some of the information to help her cook for her husband, who has developed some health issues.

In return, she sent me this!

Oh yeah, I already found a black forest macaroon jam with chocolate and coconut and an orange and chili marmalade, a carrot cake jam and a couple others that I NEED to try.

Thanks, trsinc, I'll put this right next to "Small Batch Preserving" and "Joy of Pickling" that Readinglady sent me, you've managed to supply a third of my "canning cookbook" library!

Now I can hardly wait until it's time for fresh fruit and gardens...

No way, BKay. You've proven you can grow hostas where you are. Maybe not some of the more, ah, 'delicate' ones, but you've 'weeded' out some of the ones you've seen that don't do too well in your climate. Don't give up! As far as which questions to ask, I'd start with the ones you seem to want to ask, as detailed in the third paragraph of your post. Those are good questions, and they wouldn't exactly be volunteering info if they simply answered those politely asked, yet pointed, questions. I'd tell 'em that you're an avid hosta grower, and to help you personally as a gardener, you'd be curious why all these big, apparently healthy hostas are gone. Shoot, you make ME want to ask them, and I'm not even a resident! Maybe I will, too... : ) Just my take, and good luck with the infoquest, Don B.

Nope, no high gloss plastic finish for me!!!! All it needs is a good washing to get off the flecks of padding that are stuck on and a coat of wax. If I wanted a brand new looking floor...I'd have just gone to the store! I want character, and patina and age! And I got lucky with the staples...they only used them where the seams were :) so there aren't many! The sitting room was never painted (yay!!) The bedroom apparently had a floor cloth and they painted around it, with a yellowish milk paint. The milk paint is worn in the traffic areas...and the square in the center that was protected is just beautiful aged wood. I'm not going to sand off that milk paint. To me, it tells a story :)

Thank you for the kind words, Yes, I know in the grand scheme of things this is not that big a deal. But, I have been without a kitchen for nearly seven months now- the novelty of cooking in the basement, and doing dishes by hand has worn off. Going to the party, I couldn't find the box where I packed the platters, so I used a basket I vacuumed wood shavings off of and ruined a facecloth wiping clean, then magically found a Christmas placemat to line the basket (I wasn't going to put food directly in there!), even though I pulled out tons of boxes looking for where I've packed away the cloth napkins. I can't even move much into the kitchen cupboards I do have, another long story- besides the delay in the granite countertop, several cupboards were not delivered with the original order, so part of what 'Allen' is doing is custom making the new cupboards, which means we can't install the second pantry and the other upper until those are here. (you know how the cupboards have to be installed in order...) Not that I could use the pantry anyways, as none of the pullout shelves, innards for one of the lazy susans, two banks of drawers, are not here, and I don't know how many doors don't close properly... And, as we are doing a total house reno DIY, we can't begin to demo the Master Bedroom until all the kitchen/dining room stuff comes out of the sewing room_ then the MB stuff will go in there while we work on that room. And, DD and DS are coming home for Christmas, so we can't move into their rooms temporarily... so looks like we'll be camping on an air mattress in our MB over Christmas (assuming we even have the kitchen stuff moved in...) It's not JUST the innumerable delays with the kitchen, but those delays are holding us back from so many other jobs. And you know, the holidays, are a recipe for stress anyways... Oh well, good thing I had to go out, cuz I might have really worked up a rage. And Lily, yes, part of me wanted to know what the explanation was this time, but I guess it doesn't really matter- they're not going to be here regardless... The reason for all the other delays, I really don't have the time to list them all- bottom line _ it's a new company, they are dealing with new suppliers (to them), they've had personnel problems_ our original lady was fired_ I'm now dealing with the manager and he is basically doing all the work himself on our kitchen. He is fabricating the granite himself (and part of me just cringes at the thought), and custom making all the cabinets, shelves and drawers that we still need. And, he still needs to run his business, and do all his other tasks. Anyhow, I'm so disappointed, if I could rest assured that all the delays just mean everything is going to be perfect, I think I could handle that, but that pit in my stomach is telling me that there could be serious problems with things- maybe I'm worrying needlessly, but I don't know...my spidey sense is tingling...

Oh Annie, my edition is dog-eared and tabbed for all the wonderful things I STILL want to make out of this book.

I just made the Strawberry Lemonade Concentrate (pg 192) and it was SOOOOOO amazing.

I mix it with a little sparkling mineral water and ice. Incidentally, if you mix this with Absolute Vanilla Vodka, it tastes JUST like strawberry ice cream!!!! VERRRY dangerous drink....goes down really easy! LOL!

Vanilla Strawberry Fizz

1/4 equal parts Strawberry Lemonade Concentrate
1/2 equal parts sparkling mineral water
1/4 equal parts Vanilla Vodka

Mix all ingredients and serve over ice. YUM!

Kathy, I've canned a lemonade/strawberry concentrate before, I got the recipe at Harvest, so I'm going to have to check this recipe out, I haven't made any for a couple of years.

I've never mixed it with vodka, though, we just drank it cold, out of the canning jars, we didn't even dilute it. I am NOT going to mention to Ashley that it could taste like ice cream. (grin)

Niiiice...I ordered that book for the library, then I bought it for myself (even though I am not a huge Ball Blue Book fan), then my fair superintendants and several people at work had to have it.

We just polished off a jar of the seafood cocktail sauce with some grilled shrimp...heirloom tomatoes and horseradish...mmmmm.

trsinc, I guess that means that you didn't get yours? I mailed the same day you mailed mine.

Of course, my post office people LIKE me, I bring them samples every now and then. I think they've forgiven me for having the 32 baby ducks shipped last year...

Hi Annie!

How is this book different from the Ball Blue Book that you pros on the Harvest thread always reference? When I first got this one and went thru it, it seems to have all the same info that you refer to. Do I now need to get the Ball Blue Book as well? I thought this was just an updated version.

Steve, there's some contention over the Complete Ball Blue Book, as it was apparently published in Canada, with guidelines less stringent than those here in the United States.

Soooo....trained educators like Linda Lou at Harvest can't tell you the recipes are "safe" because the USDA hasn't approved them. Now, understand, this doesn't mean that they AREN'T safe, just that they are untested by our government.

Since the company (Ball/Kerr/Jardin/Bernardin/whatever) has food scientists that do testing, and guidelines and parameters they work within, I'm perfectly comfortable with this book and the safety of the recipes and techniques.

I do have the $5 Ball Blue Book, it's about 1/5 the size of the Complete issue, so there are a lot of recipes in this Complete book that aren't in the others.

I have that book and I use it much more than the Ball Blue Book. It is my main canning book.
