Good Monday Besh. Last week of school is great! Summer will officially be here.

My barn is painted! Four of us pushed all weekend and we actually finished it be 2pm yesterday! It looks great again. Nothing like a new coat of paint.

I even got SP out for rides early and that was good because it was really hot this weekend.

Now I have to get my house cleaned so I can take off for Woodstock, VT on Wednesday for the rest of the week. I can't wait although I am sad that i have to leave Casey behind with the donkeys and goats.

Good MONDAY Morning!

Hope everyone had a great weekend. We had great weather, a great party for the just-turned-21 DSD, but no luck at the casinos! Unfortunately, we did not connect with Donna due to scheduling conflicts, but she and I will be making plans for lunch soon.

Need to run to a 2-hour meeting.

Dee--When you're in Myrtle Beach, I hope we're in your EATING THOUGHTS---lol. Remember, you have to answer to us upon your return! I am almost through my 5th day of CONTROLLED EATING!!!! Hey, ya gotta start somewhere and I am doing well so far. The weather is HOT --for HERE, milkdud--lol--we're in the upper 70's and lower 80's. That helps me drink more and eat less. I'll have my FIRST weigh in on Monday, so I'll be here for that. Wodka, I am on the same page with you and the dentist's drill. When I was a youngster, my dad and mom took me to an old military dentist friend and his novocaine was WAY out of date and didn't work. I never recovered from those experiences and every dental visit is MAJOR trauma for me, emotionally---besides pinching me in the pocket book! DonnaSNJ! YAY! Good to hear from you! Stay in Touch!!!!! Whatcha been doin'? TreKaren---You've got more guts than me. I went to ONE cycling class and quit---about 2 years ago. It KILLED ME! I do ride my "outside" bike in the summer though. I have padded seat bike pants AND a gel seat---hey! Even though I have extra *fat* padding on my fanny, I still need the other padding; I don't know why! Joyce---You don't want to see your grandchildren, I gather! haha. I can TOTALLY relate to getting your house ready for an open house--it took me SO long--but I finally found I couldn't be a perfectionist about it. Just so the surface stuff and CLEAR it out into the garage or a storage bin as much as you can---then breathe, relax, and get ready! REANNE, NHSuzanne,Marci, and Besh---Get in here---NOW. You guys are MIA too often lately. We're SISTAHS, remember. Ohana now. No one gets left behind... What ever happened to PJ from CA? I wonder what she's up to???? Anybody remember her? Milkdud! WTG on that weight loss - you go girl!! I'm glad the knee is coming along well. Raeanne - yes, I am still going to Curves. This is my 2nd week and I made a commitment to myself to go Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. I stop on my way home from work. I feel better about me and am actually looking forward to getting measured again, I think in early September. And yes..I am definitely up for the book club. Marci - hard to believe it's time for school again. I saw the spinach squares recipe and will have to give them a try. John - enjoy the trip - the weather sounds promising. Be safe and have fun. Besh~That is wonderful. Clothes never did very good in TX. I haven't done a yard sale in FL. Extra calories may not be the only cause of weight gain. By Kathleen M. Zelman, MPH, RD, LD It's no mystery that a diet full of fried foods, giant portions, decadent desserts, alcohol, and sugary soft drinks will lead to weight gain. And there's little question why the pounds pile up when you take in more calories than you burn in physical activity. But how do you explain weight gain when your lifestyle includes regular exercise and a healthy diet that is controlled in calories? Gaining weight is absolutely maddening, especially when you really don't understand why the needle on the scale keeps going up. Several things should be considered if you are gaining weight while watching calories and being physically active. More than likely, it's a variety of things working together that have resulted in the weight gain. "Weight gain is so complicated; there are so many factors that can impact your weight. It is more likely a combination of things more than just one factor," explains Michelle May, MD, author of Am I Hungry? What to Do When Diets Don't Work. Here are five factors that can cause the scale to creep up when you least expect it. 1\. You Might Be Gaining Weight Because of Lack of Sleep The body functions best when well rested. "When you don't get enough sleep, your body experiences physiological stress and, biochemically, you store fat more efficiently," says May. When you're tired, you also don't handle stress as well, so you may reach for food as a coping mechanism. Further, you may be taking in extra calories from late\-night snacking. Some people think eating might help them get back to sleep, but all it really does is add more calories to their daily total. Symptoms that you may not be getting enough rest include fatigue, low energy levels, nodding off easily, and feeling irritable. Strive to get eight hours of sleep each night. "Add about 15 minutes to your bedtime and see how you feel," suggests May. "Continue to experiment with additional 15\-minute increments until you find the ... amount of sleep that is right for you." When you develop good sleeping rituals and get regular exercise, you sleep better, she adds. 2\. You May Be Gaining Weight Because of Stress We live in a society that demands we do more, be more, and achieve more. Stress moves us forward and helps cope with life's demands, but it also affects our mood and emotions. "Stress response, whether it is 'fight\-or\-flight,' juggling too many responsibilities, or coping with financial pressures, triggers a biochemical process where our bodies go into survival mode," explains May. "Our bodies store fuel, slow down metabolism, and dump out chemicals \[cortisol, leptin, and other hormones\] which are more likely to cause ... obesity in the abdominal region." 2\. You May Be Gaining Weight Because of Stress continued... Many people reach for food to help ease the stress. But, of course, this doesn't work in the long run. "Food is a temporary fix because it does not deal with the real stressors that must be addressed in order to reduce the trigger for eating and fix the problem," says May. Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, assistant director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition, says stress eaters tend to prefer high\-carbohydrate foods because these foods trigger an increase in the brain chemical serotonin, which has a calming effect. "It is almost like self\-medicating," she says. "Many people binge on starchy foods to make themselves feel better." Both May and Bowerman recommend relaxation techniques as well as exercise, which also burns calories and provides other health benefits. 3\. You May Be Gaining Weight Because of Medications Some prescription drugs used to treat depression, mood disorders, seizures, migraines, blood pressure, and diabetes can cause weight gain, from a modest amount to as much as 10 pounds per month. Some steroids, hormone replacement therapy, and even oral contraceptives may also cause gradual weight creep. Your medicine cabinet might be the cause of your weight gain if you've gained 5 or more pounds in a month without a change in your lifestyle. "Every drug works a little differently to cause weight gain, from increasing appetite, altering the way fat is stored, to how insulin levels change," says May. "And not all drugs have the same side effects on all people." In the case of antidepressants, weight gain may not even be related to the action of the drug \-\- feeling better can also result in a heartier appetite. Some drugs can cause fluid retention that shows up on the scale as weight gain, but is not fat, and is usually easily corrected. Experts say that some of the most common types of medications that may cause weight gain are: Steroids Antidepressants Antipsychotics Antiseizure medications Diabetes medications High blood pressure medications Heartburn medications But it's important to remember that a few extra pounds may be well worth the trade\-off of what a particular medication does for your overall health, experts say. Further, even if your medications are the cause of your weight gain, you still need to be mindful of eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise. "Rarely is the problem solved with a change in meds," says May. "These things can contribute, but rarely are the sole cause of the weight gain." If you suspect your medication is causing weight gain, talk to your health care provider to see about changing your prescription. But whatever you do, don't go off your medication without seeking medical advice. "There could be very serious consequences if you stop taking your medication without consulting your physician," says May. 4\. You May Be Gaining Weight Because of a Medical Condition The most common medical condition that causes weight gain is hypothyroidism. A deficiency of thyroid hormone can decrease metabolism, causing appetite loss and weight gain. "If you are feeling fatigued, lethargic, swelling, hoarse voice, intolerance to cold, sleeping too much, or headaches, you should see your doctor for an easy test to determine if you have hypothyroidism," says May. Much rarer is a condition known as Cushing's syndrome \-\- a disorder caused by an excess of the hormone cortisol \-\- that can also result in weight gain. 5\. You May Be Gaining Weight Because of Menopause Women reach menopause at a range of ages, but most are in midlife and are often less physically active than when they were younger. Along with aging comes a natural slowing of metabolism. At the same time, hormonal changes can trigger hunger, depression, and poor sleep. "It is multifactoral. When women go through menopause, they lose estrogen, causing their shapes to change \-\- usually a loss of hip and thigh weight. And they start to gain more in the middle," says Bowerman. She explains that estrogen favors fat deposition in the lower body, and when you lose this hormone, fat is more likely to be deposited in the midsection (much like men). This spare tire around the middle has been not so affectionately called the "menopot." The key to avoiding this extra belly fat is to maintain and increase the amount of lean body mass, which will, in turn, increase your metabolism or calorie burn rate. "Women need to understand how critically important weight lifting and strength training is to their health," says Bowerman. And don't worry, doing strength training won't make women muscle\-bound, experts say. Exercise also helps offset bone loss that can come with menopause. A combination of exercise and a healthy, calorie\-controlled diet rich in calcium and vitamin D is the answer to thwarting menopausal weight gain.

Working 1/2 day tomorrow - office is officially closed but like you guys I love it when I'm alone (or just a couple of us there) and I can really get stuff done without constant interruption. Finally - Whencit - welcome! I am 50 years old, single and live in NJ (near Atlantic City) with 2 very spoiled dogs. I am fortunate to have great friends (many of them right here). Most of my family lives close by. I love warm weather but enjoy the beach any time of the year. I enjoy traveling, cooking, reading and, hope to enjoy exercising in the very near future (that one might take some work but I will persevere). I hope you stick around and join us - we would love to get to know you! My NY resolution - I never make them cause I never keep them but the emotional roller coaster 2007 was for me showed me I need to prioritize and set personal goals -- they are to get back in shape, travel more often and just enjoy life..anything else good that comes along after that is just icing on the cake. Well, I received another "unbirthday" package from our dear Raeanne. There was a gorgeous Lake George postcard in it along with a note that stated that it was about time I got a dog. I unwrapped my gift to find the most adorable luggage tag in the shape of a white puppy! I told Ed that I wanted to put it on my luggage immediately, and he said "No, this goes on hand-carry because someone will steal it!" I really love it, and it didn't bite me or hump my leg!

Dee - When I saw the luggage tag I immediately thought of you, first because you travel more than anyone I know and how much fun it would be to send you a dog. No bites, no humping, no feeding, no walking...

Suzanne - that was quite a job you had over the weekend and you finished early on Sunday WTG. Does Casey get jealous when he is left behind?

We had a wonderful weekend, but the weather was uncooperative yesterday for a Father's Day BBQ on the lake - we did improvise and had a fun time.

Good evening all,

Well, I survived my first root canal. OMG, I was so scared - what a big fat baby I am. I don't blink an eye when a 1,000 pound horse and carriage run over me but this was too much! Raeanne, you were right I percieved it to be much worse than it was but I shook the whole time! Of course, the novacaine has yet to wear off so we will see how I feel in the morning! The dentist said I would definitely be able to tell that he worked on my teeth! I know I am a baby but when it comes to this I am scared! (Deep breath in) it's over and it will be okay! LOL

Raeanne, sounds like you are being an exceptional un-birthday friend! I am trying hard to picture Dee with a dog!! LOL Ruff, ruff!

Good TUESDAY morning!

Raeanne/Suzanne, I'm thinking about taking a pic of my new puppy luggage tag and making up birth announcements! Can you imagine my chilhood friends getting that announcement that I have a pet? LMAO!! You guys just have no idea how funny that would be to them. I just might do it!

QOD: What's everyone doing this week for their health? Yesterday I went to aerobics for an hour and this morning I was out at 6am for a 35-minute walk. Also, I've been really diligent about packing good low-fat foods for the office. I'm eating 6 times a day (every 3 hours). It's working out so far.....decent breakfast at 7am with a yogurt and fruit at 10am, etc......

I know I have been MIA - sorry about that, will try and do better. Unfortunately Dee and I did not connect due to conflicts, we are working in lunch like she said. I am so sorry we didn't get together this past weekend.

Dee - wish you had better luck at the tables in AC. You have a great un-birthday partner (but so do I!)

Besh - lucky you - off for the summer - yay!!!

Suzanne - enjoy VT. I have had several root canals and the thought of them is much worse than the actual procedure, Raeanne was right. Still, I would skip one if offered...

Hi there!

Donna, I'm also rooting for Julia. If she doesn't win it all, I hope that he hires her as an apprentice because she's the one who was studying a notebook at one point while the rest of the snooty ones smoked, drank, and whined! The nerve of them to say that she's not worthy of the prize.

My eating went well yesterday until dinner. DH and I had errands to run and ended up at Fuddruckers. I ordered the fish-and-chips because I was soooo sick of salads. I did add a large portion of tomato salad to my plate and took the fish out of the deep-fried stuff, but I admit I ate those 'chips'. :-(

Time to move forward and leave that dinner behind!

Hi All,

It's been a heck of a month, but things are good here. Erica was at her grandparents house on June 1st and fell from the swingset and broke her arm. DH didn't bother to call me, the poor kid went 3 1/2 hours with it. At 7:30 he brought her home. We ended up in the E-Room half the nite, and then went to her orthopedic doctor's trauma center the next day and had surgery to put two pins in. We go back to the doctor on Friday.

Needless, to say, I have missed a lot of work this month. We are getting a new computer next month so I am hoping DH will let us get hooked up to the net at home. Doubt it though. He is such a tight wad!

Hope everyone is doing good. I will try to check back in when I have more time.

Hi all!

Jen--I'm so sorry to hear about Erica--I hope it heals quickly!

HK--yeah, I'm rooting for Julia, too. I hated to see Aaron go though; he was interesting to watch!

QOD--well, I'm eating the 6 meals a day, but today I went to a gastroenterologist, and I am scheduled for an upper GI
at the end of July. I also found out that I have globus pharyngis (WOOHOO! At least I now know what I have been dealing with for years!), and, more than likely, GERD. I pretty much figured the GERD part, so now it's just dealing with it.

Also--I'm reallllllly stressed out at work, and my BP was up significently, which has me worried. I've always ran on the low side, so for it to be up to what it was is scary.

So, that's it for me--oh, we had a big sale this weekend--3 Benz, 3 baots, and a gorgeous house--what fun!

Jen - OMG!!!! Your poor DD. Why did DH wait so long? Was she in pain that whole time? Two pins in a tiny arm. I hope she is doing well. Little ones heal fast!

NHSuzanne - Glad you are done with the barn and you get to have fun the rest of the summer. Send us a pic.

Maddie - Hope your getting your BP under control.... Stress s*cks!!!! I have stress at work too. I do take BP meds.

The DeeMarie show sounds good. But be carefull if your show is a success, Rosie O'Donnell will take it over...LOL!

Jen - Poor Erica and poor mommy. Your heart must've been broken. The good news is that kids bounce back so quickly.

Suzanne - did you get much riding time in this week? I think I am going to paint one of your egg pictures as my next project. The art teacher is making us do portraits right now, but I will start the eggs at home.

OK, here is a long story and a request for an idea!

Our August cruise is a group of about 60 people, aged 2 years to 80. We like to use some of the cash back from the cruise line to buy private parties and for prizes for games we arrange....about 6 games per cruise. This gets us really bonded as a group, as naturally not everyone knows everyone else.....I bring a friend, who brings a friend, etc. (SS friends are always welcome; ask me for details of upcoming cruises!)

Each person receives a booklet from us prior to the cruise with the names of everyone in our group and their cabin #. Also there are helpful hints and upfront info on where our party(s) will be, as well as gathering excitement about the games and prizes.

This time around we have a Word Search ($75 to the first correct puzzle returned to me, DH, or the other couple running the cruise.)

Explorer of the Seas Golf Open. Our group is invited to meet us at the Deck 13 Miniature Golf Course. ($50 first place, $30 second place; $20 third place; and a NJ Lottery ticket to every participant)

Scavenger Hunt (hilarious) 99 points for the person who brings in the anchor with chain!!!! (person with most points wins $75, second place $25, remaining top 10 get NJ Lottery ticket).

Photography game----we have a friend going on the ship about a month before us. He brings back lots of photos of odd places on the ship, and lets us know where they are located. We download a collage of photos (simple one at the beginning of the cruise...prize $100 to the first person who correctly IDs) and a more complicated collage towards the end of the cruise ($100 prize as before).

These games have been a tremendous success and ensures that many people come back to cruise with our groups. My friends and I are not travel agents and take no money back....if any funds remain, we give it back equally among our friends/passengers.

YOUR JOB: Can you please help me come up with another game that is appropriate to play aboard a ship? We donÂt want to "judge" anything (as above)!

Cruise Director Dee - What fun! I wanna come, I wanna come!! If it wasn't in August I think I would grab a couple of friends and join you. I posted a link below that will create a cryptogram for you, they also do small crossword puzzles. I love cryptograms and I think you could come up with some fun sayings like "red sky at night, sailors delight, red sky at morning, sailors take warning."

I am determined to find something for Dee -

This one may not be challenging enough, but have an award for the person that can come up with the oldest coin. This way they can harrass other passengers, etc. to see if they can get an old coin from them. - just a thought...

Raeanne, that's a great one!

Someone on KT suggested a gift exchange and lottery ticket game which sound like fun. We may have lots more games with a bit less as a prize to make sure that at least one game appeals to guests.

This is the part that I love...a month or two before we leave where we get our games and parties together. It makes it more fun for me.

Seriously, I will announce our next group cruise here (or e:mail) in case anyone wants to join us. Our agent can arrange your airfare, as we usually leave from NY or NJ. You are all welcome to reap the benefits of our lower fares, come to the onboard private parties, etc. and you have my promise that you are free from any obligation to hang out with us lunatics throughout the cruise!!
