Calorie King - useful website

I checked the archives, and it doesn't look like anyone's mentioned this for almost a year--so I thought I'd post it. It's been very useful to me, especially to find calories for foods from fast-food places and restaurants. Here is a link to the main page for that section. Go down to the menu box that says "choose a brand", click on the little drop-down arrow next to "average all brands" and you'll get a humongous list of restaurants to check! Just scroll to the one you want, and click on Go.

(Did you know if you ate a whole blooming onion at Outback Steakhouse it's over 1000 calories?)

The main listing for each restaurant gives calories for each item, but if you click on the menu item name (in blue) you'll link to more complete nutrition info, including carb and fat grams.

I've been just counting calories for a bit over a year now and its been working really well for me. I started on new years of 2007 and have since lost about 67 lbs. (I did take about 2 months off in there due to a loss in the family and for me, greiving and dieting didn't mix.) I also exercise about 3-5 days a week, mainly walking/running and a weight lifting DVD. I've seen a nutritionist every few months and she agrees with what I'm doing. Basically I track my calories and aim for between 1200-1500 a day. I do try to make them highly nutritious calories. Whole grains, fruits and veggies, lean meats, and lots of fiber. I also take a multivitamin, vit D and calcium supplement. The great thing about just counting calories for me is that nothing is off limits and that I can occasionally splurge if I want to. For example if I know I'm going out to dinner tomorrow night to a nice resteraunt, I'll try to stay on the low end of my calories the day before, during the day of, and the day after. That way I can enjoy my higher calorie meal, but it doesn't derail me from my goals. Also make sure you are tracking everything with calories, including the drinks. If I'm going to happy hour with the gals after work, I skip my afternoon snack and use those calories for a recreational beverage. (And, because I'm restricting calories, one or two drinks is all I need to get a bit tipsy now.) I highly recommend some of the free calorie counting websites out there for tracking. fitday, sparkspeople, and calorie-count are some good ones.

Just Joined Weight Watchers - Anyone using website?

Hi Ellen and welcome! I have counted points using the Weight Watchers method, but never actually joined the program. I was able to lose to within 3 pounds of my goal weight. Then I got off the program and haven't been able to make myself get back! I have only gained 6Â½ lbs back, so that makes me around 10 lbs more than I would like to be and I think all 10 lbs are in my stomach! I hate that!!! I always had a flat stomach until I hit around 47 or 48 and then the weight decided it liked my stomach area. I didn't do any exercising while counting points, but I have started an exercise program of my own the past week and plan to keep it up. Hopefully I can get toned up and build some muscle so that I can get rid of the ab flab! Buglady, thanks for the nice words about my website! I just put info there that really helped me while I was counting points. If you come across more helpful info just let me know and I'll be happy to add it to the webpage. My biggest problem is that at age 55 I still eat like a teenager. I love junk food! I guess I'm really fortunate that I haven't gained more than I have considering my eating habits. MaryAnn (who just finished off some ice cream and a few cookies, and feel like it all went straight to my stomach!)

Any web site that totals a recipe's calories?

You can go to Dietpower.com and there is a terrific program they sell that can calculate recipes and they have like 30,000 food in there database. and most of the fastfoods too. i believe the program is $ 49.00 however you can get a trail for 15 days and they get another one for additional 15 days. I have used this program off and on for over 2 years and when i do i follow regualrly i have lost 10 - 20 ponds Here is a link that might be useful: www.dietpower.com

I am a clasic example of being careful what you wish for. All my life, I have been under weight, not skin and bones but I felt as though I could use a few pounds. My father told my mother I was built like a Barbie doll. At any rate, even after having six children, I still only weighted in around 95 to 100 pounds. The doctor told me to drink milk shakes, I drank them until I felt sick just looking at them. He told me to have a glass of wine about a half hour before meals to stimulate my appetite. Well, it didn't work, but if I drank enough I didn't care. now, all of a sudden, over the last six months at the age of 67, I have put on weight like gangbusters. I am up to 147 pounds and I hate it. Most of it is around my middle, a friend of mine told me it is just "baby belly". I don't care whose belly it is, I don't want it! I know nothing about dieting and was so happy to see that Erica posted a calorie site that I can refer to. The main reason I wrote this is to thank her from the bottom of my heart. Although I would never have the guts to wear a bikini any more at my age, neither will I feel as though I need maternity tops. You are in my will Erica.

I found calorie balance diet does the same things as calorie king ,but a good deal cheaper. I have lost 15 pounds now.

Calorie King is not something you have to pay for. It has LOTS of FREE tips and a FREE online calorie count for most any food you want to look up.

Please don't confuse the issue by posting a Pay Only service. Advertising is not allowed on this forum and that website may be construed as such even it if wasn't meant to be by you.

I am sorry. didnt mean to sound like spam. I meant the desktop thing. I was just estatic about the weight loss and I udnerstand that there is a number of these diet journals out there. they work well for me. If it looks too much like spam we can take it down.

I know you didn't. I didn't mean to sound like the "forum police" either. Just that you have to be careful here. Ivillage is almost as picky as Spike used to be some ways. I was just trying to give you a friendly heads-up. Hard to do sometimes on the net. I personally don't see any harm in the link.

That's a great site. I used to go to P.F.Chang's and can't believe the chicken salad is 1040 calories, wow! I work at the Airport and get Buritto Beach, minus the shell a lot, but that wasn't listed. Too bad.
