Brother PE 150 - What else do I need?

Hi all: I have a Brother PE150, which I am just learning to use. Which is the most "simple" box to purchase to download free designs from the internet?. I have all the computer requirements, and i just want to download and stitch free designs offered, not to digitize my own stuff (maybe for later) but for now, just to get some new fonts or simple animal patterns. If I get the vikant ultimate box, which seems to be highly recommended, do I have to subscribe to embird or can I get free designs from that website without purchasing anything else but the box and a card. Others who have the Simplicity Smart Box (which I can buy locally) plese give me your input also. AARGH...I am so confused! Help. Thanks.

Embird is an additional program that does many things and is completely separate from the reader writer box thing you are inquiring about...so you don't get confused.

Your main concern is getting the downloaded design from the computer to the box and card and then to the embroidery machine. Just about any brand box will do that and remember to ask for a .pes formatted card that your machine uses. These boxes work similar to a computer external disk or floppy drive.

I would first thoroughly learn the ins and outs of your machine and practice page by painful page. It will pay dividends later. You will also find out what type needles and extra hoops your machine uses.

You also need extra hoops, needles, machine embroidery thread and various stabilizers in addition to the box so you may have to take the box cost into consideration.

Does your dealer offer software classes? I belong to a monthly software/digitizing class for my Bernina. I've been going for several years, and it has been invaluable. If you have that kind of class, your instructor should be able to advise you on that. I don't know anything at all about Embird or the boxes since Bernina does not require any of that that I'm aware of. I can download .pes formatted stuff directly to the desktop as a zip file; however, sometimes the design is digitized in default colors, so I change the colors through my software. I've also been able to read .hus stuff but haven't dabbled in any others.

I am a new owner of the SE270D from walmart. I also got the PED basic from walmart. The only bad things so far seem to be: 1) 4 inch field, which I knew from the start, I'm learning to rehoop. 2) gotta get a program that will convert files to .pes (not a big deal, but have found a couple so far I want!) 3) have to find a program that will allow me to resize a design so that it will fit on my hoop! So, that's it so far, wanna have some fun, get some varigated thread! It's like a whole new world! LOL Lisa

This could be many things and it's been ages since I've used PE Design, but I'll try :) On the thread nesting, unthread and rethread your machine, usually when there is a problem with thread nesting below the design, the problem is somewhere in the thread path above the design. It could be that the thread is not pulled into the tension disk fully, or it is coming out of the pull-up lever. Also, once when I had this problem I discovered that I had a tiny burr in the throat plate right on the edge of the whole where the needle goes through. A little bit of very fine sandpaper very carefully rubbed on it took care of that. Basically, check your complete upper thread path to make sure you're threaded correctly and that there are no rough spots where the thread could be catching. On the design issue, have you ever been able to use this design the way it is? I suspect that you are correct in that the design is too big if the text was fine by itself. You have to make sure that all the edges of the design field are completely within the hoop edge on your screen. I believe there are little black squares that indicate the 'frame' of the design. I used to think that those could be ON the line of the frame, but they have to be completely INSIDE it. If you're still having problems, post back and we can do some more troubleshooting!

Marti, I have been advised against using prefilled bobbins by my Brother dealer because they wear at the high speeds. It results in paper/cardboard fuzz clogging the delicate functions of the moving parts in the bobbin area. May be fact or fiction, but I didn't want to risk it so I didn't even use some that came with a Starter thread kit. My machine is underground & we run humidifers to prevent problems. They cut off automatically when the bucket gets full, which can be daily at times. If I happen not to go downstairs for some reason & see that they are full, that fuzz in high humidity could set up like paper mache in my machine. I was wondering if that might be your problem if windows are possibly open & a/c not being used as much this time of the year. That area is frequently cooler than the rest of the house in the winter. My LCD screen is very dim when I first turn my machine on. So I know enviornment can be a factor with them.

HI dancing girl ! Alot has happened since I purchased my pe scan! 2 new embroidery machines 1 old version of Disney then a new version of brother embroidery machine ....I haven used my pe scan but once! I tryed using it yesterday. ....it no longer works! Tryed looking it up on brother website but there is no such item must be so outdated! I took it apart today and fuse is black I need a new fuse ! But I don't know what kind of fuse it is! Brother is closed on Sunday :(. Maybe you know someone with this information the rest of the machine is pristine! But the fuse! ...I JUST ORDER THE BROTHER SCAN N CUT LAST WEEK! I'm so excited I'm wondering if I need this machine anymore now that I have the scan and cut I might be able just to transfer to pe design after I scan on cut n scan or I can just transfer it to my machine after that it sounds complicated to me so if I have to but a new one I might just get the flip pro scanner for brother I found one for 135.oo. so I have to wait till next month unless the cut n scan works?? If anyone knows anything about the only fuse that's inside the pe scan let me know ! I like to use this for lace if I can fix it! Thank you so much!! Dancing girl! !

Probably what you need is The Amazing box or the Ultimate Box. They allow you to download designs onto a card and put the card into your machine. I have that machine and the Ultimate Box. It works well for me. At a later time I decided that I wanted to do more and got Embird. Colleen

I've had the Brother PE170d and now the White 3300 (same machines as 150 just different built ins). I use an Ultimate Box and blank card with no problems. You can download free designs and put on the card and use with no problems as long as they are in PES format and for the 4x4 field. You may eventually want to get Embird (I love it!) down the road as it converts formats, you can add lettering to your design easily, adjust size, cut things out or merge things in. It just allows you to do more but is not necessary. You can always try the 30 day free trial. Hope this helps.
