Do you mean that you were surprised to find that there were built-in dressers in the master bedroom closet (not expecting any,) or just surprised that they were already there, delivered?

Good to see you won't need a Plan B, etc. They're absolutely the perfect choice for your house! All are wonderful. But my absolute fav is the Laundry Room. Look at all that storage! OMG.

I LOVE your laundry room with it's sunny window. I actually wouldn't mind doing a little folding & ironing there. :o)

Our next door neighbor is a cabinet maker and he leaves for work every Saturday & Sunday morning at 6:30. He told us several years ago that unless the customer requests something different he always tries to install on the weekends. That way he doesn't have to worry about other trades being in the way while his guys are essentially moving "furniture".

Kate and Amy, I was shocked they were there. Last thing I thought I would see on Sunday :-) Kate, we were not suppose to get the built in's in the master closet so that was a bit of a surprise. Plans called for them at first but we decided against them thinking we would not use them. I remember the builder asking if I was sure, I am so glad he went with them anyway. I LOVE them!

rhome410 - I am right there with you! I am curious to see how this works but the builder is staining them. He wanted them installed first. I have seen his cabinets that he has done before and they look wonderful so I trust him. We will see! LOL!

sniffdog - That is the same thing DH said. LOL! On to the next drama :-)

pinktoes - no plan b!! YEA! I think the cabinets are perfect. I was so pleased.

persnickety - we are going with travertine all throughout the house and carpet in the bedroom.

Love your laundry room. It is very similar to mine (except you are lucky enough to have a window). I'm going to go pour over your cabinet configuration to see if I can gather some ideas since my final plans haven't gone to the cabinet make yet (and won't until drywall is in so he can have exact measurements).

Your master bath cabinet set up looks a lot like ours. And what are they made of? Looked similar to our alder that we used. So glad they finally made it for you all. Our cabinets were stained in place, but they stain before they paint in our case. But I'd guess they do it about the same, just opposite order in your case and tape off all the painting areas. I will say wait to go out there b/c you can't breathe at all while they're staining/laquering. I don't know how the workers do it. I felt high as a kite after just a few minutes! LOL

GREAT! Yes, stay away while they stain. Later, don't let the painters get paint ON the stain. You can paint over stain, but not the reverse.

jeannekay - They are knotty alder :-) Thanks for the tip on the staining. I didn't even think about that. Sure do not want to be breathing that stuff in!!!

Very nice!.....Knotty Alder....all the rage...a beautiful wood with fine features. I'm sure they'll be gorgeous once a stain and finish goes on.

I had never heard of knotty alder before. The builder mentioned he put them in his house and we went and looked at them and I fell in love! Now it seems like everyone has alder! LOL! It is like when you like a car and you buy it. You never seen it before and once you buy it everyone seems to have one! LOL! I LOVE LOVE LOOOOVE them! I love the knots. Goes very good with the style of the house. I can not wait to see the stain :-)

So glad that your cabinet man is making good on his word. And yes, lots of people stain in place, and even after painting. No worries there.

I must say I adore your laundry room. The layout is perfect... you've made excellent use of your space. I'll come over and do your laundry (you know, as a housewarming gift) if I can work in that room!! :o)

Congrat's on some beautiful cab's. Our cabinetmakers came yesterday to remeasure the house now that drywall is hung. We are next on their list. Woo-hooo! HOpe mine are half as lovely. I'll be a happy girl!

Awesome Kelly! They look fabulous! I agree about the staining onsite..beware of the fumes. Man, ours stunk for days! But so worth it in the end. Also, just another word of caution. Your eyes take a few days to adjust when the stain first goes up. We FREAKED out that ours was too dark but it was just because we had been looking at naked wood for a while and all that color was startling at first. Good Luck and can't wait to see them finished!

totally - Thank you SO much for your sweet words!! I do love that laundry room! LOL! I was standing in the kitchen yesterday and thinking I will not fill up 20% of those cabinets!! I have never not had that problem before so I can deal with it :-) I had to laugh at your house warming gift comment. My sister said she would laundry all day if she had a window to look out.

Lindy - Thank you soooo much! I will be sure to keep DD away that is for sure. The builder told me today the cabinets will be a bit of a shock once they are stained. He must be preparing me for what you are talking about.

I think they are starting to stain Monday :-) They are taking out all of the extra sheet rock tomorrow, putting the rest of the closet shelves in. He said the floors will go in after they stain the cabinets. The bank wanted us to close by the 14th, was not going to happen so now it has been pushed back to January. The builder said he will try to be done before Christmas if not the last week of December. I am not going to stress over it anymore. I know we are close and it will happen when it happens. I say that know 'cause I am still flying high from the cabinets!! LOL!

Another note about the stain, alder stains kind of blotchy, but it will mellow out after awhile, even after a few days, you will see a difference. It doesn't darken quite as much as cherry does, but it evens out. We have had our stained cabinets in for a few weeks now and every day I notice a difference. Congrats, by the way!

Thanks for the heads up minnt! I am heading out to the house today. There is 'suppose' to be some serious action going on today. I have my shop vac in tow!

I have notty alder also and really like them. I didn't realize they were so popular. I kept mine natural but they have a clear finish on them. Would you mind taking a picture of the kitchen cabinet (not island) looking down on it. I want to see how far back your drawer goes. Also, have you selected hardware for cabinets yet?

kelly- they are so beautiful! We also have knotty alder cabinets and doors and I just smile when I look at them.

countrylivin - I will try to get a picture for you. Seems to me if I remember right they go back and there is about a 2 inch gap from the back? maybe not that much. I will be out there Saturday so I will get that picture for you. We are not putting hardware on them. I had them cut out a little slot so they can ge opened, oh the word is slipping my thoughts right now. I wanted it to be rustic so I thought I would see how we would like it without hardware. If I want it we can add it later. I like them without it for now though :-)
