Sources for wood carriage-style garage doors

We are in the process of choosing our garage doors and am hoping to solicit input and sources. Our house has 3 8'x8' garage doors along the front. The house will be sided with Nichiha Sierra Premium Shake. Our front door with be a Mahogany craftsman style door with 12" sidelights and a 12" transom. Some stone work in the front.

Our dilemma... We think the house would look SOOO much better with wood versus painted garage doors. We have an eastern front exposure, so aware but not overly concerned with the maintenance issues.

From those of you that have installed wooded garage doors, where did you get them? We would also consider a "stainable" fiberglass or steel door if it looked good. Does anyone have experience with this? The only product I've been able to find so far is the 9800 model by Wayne Dalton. Has anyone used them?

Please, please, please. Garage door sources and experience. I'm tired and want to finish the exterior specifications so I can go buy some tile, toliets and lights. Today, that is sounding much more fun. :)

We have Clopay doors and love them. Not sure if they have wood, but the site shows doors that look like wood. Hope you find what you want.

Carriage style doors are generally all built on a base panel made of a 1" to 1 3/8" x 2 1/2" to 3" wood frame. High quality doors (Hahn Woodworking) make the frame out of a decay resistant hardwood (Meranti mahogany, etc.), medium quality doors (Designer Doors) use Douglas Fir, and the lower quality doors (Overhead) use hemlock. Designer doors makes two models A & B in order to better compete with the brands above and below. The basic frame is faced with with 1/4" plywood usually on both sides (Designer only on inside). The plywwod is often luan mahogany but some is "super-ply"(Designer) The best doors prime all sides of all components before assembly (Hahn) some only after assembly (Designer) and some only partially (Overhead). Wood styles and rails and T&G paneling are added to the outer face of this basic door unit. Hahn uses clear Spanish cedar full 1" thick styles & rails butted against 3/4" T&G paneling with biscuit glued joinery and face-grain wood plugs over recessed screws into the framing. They claim 200 screws per door. Each panel is assembled separately. Designer uses clear western red cedar 5/8" thick styles and rails over-laid on top of 9/16" thick T&G paneling with putty over recessed screws . The entire door is built and then cut into separate panels. Overhead uses clear western red cedar 3/4" thick and T&G paneling glued and blind nailed. The total thickness varies from 2 1/2" to 2 7/8". Of course the front edge of this door assembly aligns (in both directions) with the inside corner of the trimmed door opening so the tracks must be set to accommodate this thickness. Polystyrene foam board insulation fills the door panel cavities. Some doors use the extruded kind (Styrofoam) and some use the expanded type (white beadboard). R values range from 5 to 7.7 The more expensive custom doors (Hahn & Designer) will consider a 9'x8' high door to be a standard size. The cheaper doors usually consider 9'x7' high door to be standard. Some provide chain drive openers, others provide belt drive openers. Some use Chamberlain Co. but Overhead has their own brand. Some provide a 3/4 hp motor, others 1/2 hp. Some use overhead torsion springs, others extension springs along the rails. There are too many glass options to describe. Some use a heavier galvanized steel track. Some offer powder coated tracks. Designer has weep holes, the others don't. All of the doors are installed by the manufacturers or their authorized agents. I would guess the approximate cost of a 9'x8' door, installed, would range from $5,000 to $2,000 assuming decorative paneling and glass. These manufacturers use different details at the horizontal panel joints with differing degrees of overlap. I'll post the details if I ever find them. Of course the manufacturers may have changed their designs in the past two years.

Sorry, I'm not photo-literate, but our carpenter made our garage doors out of plain-fronts. He overlaid them with wood strips according to a simple drawing I made. Our door tops are arched; he repeated the arch on the door so that when the door is down it appears to have an arch-top. (The rectangular top of the plain-front slides up behind the arch and you don't see it.) The door has to be hung to allow the extra thickness to move up and down. You will need a heavier door motor. Be sure to undercut the trim pieces at the "folds" so you don't have grooves showing. As I recall the plain-front doors were about $300 each and the Wayne Dalton carriage doors were $1200 each. Don't recall that the carpenter charged much.

I'd wonder about what's causing that much movement in your apron. Just about any remedy to the warm weather gap will make the sticking problem worse in the winter. It sounds like frost heave under a slab which was not done correctly.

Our lead carpenter made carriage doors for our house. He took (cheap) flat front stock doors and applied wood to them in a pattern I drew up. We didn't want glass in our garage doors, so this worked just fine. Our doors are painted, but I don't see why you couldn't stain if you wanted.

If you do this, the carpenter needs to *undercut* the trim at the folds so it disappears when the door is closed. You'll need to figure in the extra weight when you buy the door openers, too.

Carriage House Door makes some excellent good looking doors if that is what you are looking for. Not the cheapest, but pretty well made.

This guy makes beautiful doors. Even if you don't order from him you have to look at the gallery. We considered ordering from him but we have to heat our garage, so I wanted the highest R value possible (we ended up going with insulated steel that has an R value of about 18).

chisue, I've seen you mention this on other threads... Question. What material were the flat front doors made from? Were they wood, or are they steel or fiberglass with the the wood applied to them?

Our doors would done with cedar overlayed on to an insulated fiberglass door by a local company.

A neighbor in the area we are building used stain-able fiberglass and they were faux finished to looked JUST like wood (I didn't realize they weren't wood). We planned on carriage house doors, but they are expensive and we decided that the faux finish looked just as nice.

Do you have any idea who the manufacturer of those fiberglass doors was? This is an option I am definitely considering, but I'm having troubling finding a source.

We installed cedar carriage doors from Designer Doors (link attached). They are beautiful, but require a heavy-duty garage opener system. Insulation is good because of the thickness of the doors. Installed >18 months and still looking great.

Go to your garage door company and look through books of at least a couple of hundred different types of doors.Also
take picture of of ones you like. Company will tell you where you can see the ones you pick out already installed so you see what they look like actually on a garage. Problem solved.
