Running afoul of the TaxMan!

So, we get a mailed assessment from the county, for 2007, based on X percent completion as of Dec. 31. It's  enormous! DH picks himself off the floor & goes down to the assessors' office and (long story short) learns that we're being taxed for a 3000' finished basement.

Our entire house is 2512 s.f. on two stories, so that's a footprint of roughly 1800 s.f; where, do you suppose, IS this 3000' s.f. basement? Plus, for fun, we have NO basement at all; we're building on bedrock and have an adequate crawl space but no basement; not even 30 s.f., never mind the couple of extra 0's.

There were a few additional quibbles, such as them insisting that the space above the garage be taxed as finished space (DH: "No, it's unfinished attic space; it's the only storage we have in the house. We'd never finish it.' Taxman: "But you COULD finish it!" DH: "But, no . . .")

Well, since we have that 3000 s.f. basement, leading to limitless storage, I guess we can finish that space above the garage after all!

Does this sound at all familiar to anyone? Doesn't bode well for future relationships with the TaxMan!

Kate.
