Redressing an old doll

I just finished making a new outfit for this older doll. The one that was one her was in shreds. I hope the lady I made it for will be pleased with it. I had to make my own pattern.

It's lovely. That is how I got started collecting dolls. My husband wanted to garage sale and I had nothing of interest to look for so I started buying misc dolls that needed care. I advanced to a very serious doll collection.

Thank you Emma, I collected porcelain dolls for years but never really had a good place to display them. I then decided to begin collecting porcelain figurines. Now I have a rather large collection in a smaller display cabinet. I still love making dolls and redressing them like this one. If you have seen some of my other posts I have been working on a large amount of Barbie and Ken clothing. Unless my customer adds more to their order I will be changing course onto something new. I've had the urge to go back to my jewelry making for a change of pace. Time will tell. I think we all know how the creative moods are.

I know just enough about old dolls to know what I DON'T know! LOL! You have a bisque headed doll (if you look for "china doll" you will find about the shiny glazed dolls with painted on hair) with shoulder plate. It looks like she has bisque hands, but I can't tell about her feet. Things someone who knows about dolls will want to know is does she have sleep eyes? Do they open and close? does she have kid arms and legs? Bisque feet? Open or closed mouth? They will want to see closer and better pictures of her head...ears, mouth, eyes and hair and to know what you know about the doll. She appears to have been restored, the body looks new to me...now the question is what else about her is new? Does she have new hands? Feet? Hair? Has she been repainted. The outfits you sewed are just adorable! Nice job! Until one actually sews doll clothes it looks so easy, but when we do it we learn how much hand sewing has to go into it -- and in my case stitch ripping because it's been so long since I've done this and I'm sewing rather complex outfits. I've forgotten so much and am learning again the hard way. But it sure is gratifying when it's done and on the doll. You should be very proud of your excellent work!

Years ago our daughter's had the Fisher Price My Friend Jenny and Mandy dolls. I made all kinds of clothes for them. I have always had 3 of them tucked back still in the boxes. They sell for a lot on eBay but I decided to make them a wardrobe for our church bazaar coming upon November. I have had so much fun doing them. I will be there all day the day of the bazaar so I will get to see who buys them. My girls and granddaugter's all love playing with dolls.

Pattern for old 8" doll clothing

So, the pattern arrived a week or so ago. I traced the pattern onto heavy sew-on interfacing, then cut out a pair of pants. Finally got them sewed today. OH MY!!! This must be a pattern meant for a larger doll, as I followed all the directions (1983 on the pattern) and the picture shows....TOO BIG! I'm going to have to cut them down in length and width of the leg. It's one of those patterns where it's both front and back in the same piece. Sew inseam, sew crotch seam, waistband calls for 1/8" elastic (which I do not have....can you even buy it any more?) Anyone have suggestions on cutting this pattern down to size for my skinnier Campbell Kid? (I have more red fabric, that's not at issue at all.)

I think jewelry making would be a lot of fun. I really have fun with my costume jewelry collection and get lots of positive comments about them. The jewelry pictured below is made by a local artist. $12.50 each. The white one worn with a dark color picks up on the color below it. Even a guy in a store mentioned how nice it was.

I could never do such small clothes like Barbie and Ken.

These necklaces are very nice. I enjoy doing bead weaving and anything rather intricate for some reason. I am posting some I have made in the past.

Emma, Here is one more bezeled pendant I made. These take a while and you really have to concentrate but they aren't as hard as you think.

That would take a lot of patience. They are nice especially the smaller. My taste is more simple, like the ones in my photo. For example a single petal knock out rose, I think the simplicity of it makes it beautiful, most people like double petaled or flashier jewelry.

Emma, I understand what you mean about taste. That's why I make so many different styles. You never know just what will be the seller. I do tend to make things that I would also wear just in case it doesn't sell.
