Glass bottled tomatos or tetrapaks?

Have you been able to find tomatos packed in glass bottles or in tetrapaks? Trader J's didn't have them, only had sups and sauces in boxes. Looking for them due to this article re canned tomato health issues...

I read that article recently also and have been on the lookout for bottled tomatoes. I found tomato puree packaged in tetrapaks today at Tom Thumb, which is Randalls, in some areas. Are tetrapaks lined with aluminum foil?

Glad something good came from such a scary situation! Glad your niece was so concerned about you & gave you few minutes to try to do something, altho I don't think DD should be holding glass balls when the house may blow away!! Spunky kid!!( She knew it meant a lot to you!)Supposed to get in bathtub & cover yourselves with pillows to keep from getting clobbered by things like "glazing balls"LOL. You were very lucky & have a great attitude about it.I see a lot of colleges send out their students to help with repairs of damaged houses around the country, think they learned a lot from Katrina. Hope your insurance will cover water damage & that you don't have to tear out sheetrock. I live in quake country & much prefer it to hurricanes & floods. Thanks for telling us. Praying for all the folks in U.S. going through so much trouble. DS said flooding in So. Dak. too. I remember just once but our house was up high. Dad took rowboat to neighbor & handed in groceries through her kitchen window. Can your garden shed be saved? Let us know how it is going! Jan

If you can get to the neck of the bottles which are upright or near so, try dropping into each one a plain chemical glow stick. As they don't last long, wait till xmas eve and fairly late. We did it with hubby's shelf of green special label beer bottles on a high shelf. Looked cool - but the blue will look even better

Karen 57 and right handed. Well that explains it then. LOL I do know weÂre on the same page dear. No worries. YouÂve hit on the thing that is often missed with the "poking" method. You must have some void space beneath the poking device for it to go into, as well as, have the jug, bottle, whatever supported. I sometimes have visions of people trying to do this holding the container in their hands or on their laps and inadvertently giving themselves piercings. Really takes the fun out of it. Your "piercing board" is the perfect solution to avoid that problem. Sad that your hands are not what they should be. My recent adventure with a motorcycle and gravity have caused me to lose a step or three during the last couple of years. 17 broken bones (5 in my spine) and 6 months of rehab was not how I wanted to spend my 50th year. But I can still type. Spelling, not so much. And the titanium rods holding my back together are great fun. Monte the Battered

ajs - I made the bruschetta in a jar recipe last year. Too vinegary for bruschetta. But we like it on pasta. I'll use up the 10 jars or so that I made. But I doubt I'll ever make it again. Besides - after I bought the wine and the wine vinegar, it ended up being pretty expensive! I slow roast tomatoes, and then freeze them. I usually use plum type tomatoes. Cut them in half, or cut the larger ones in thirds. Place them on parchment paper on rimmed baking trays. Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper. Then I put them in a 200 degree oven overnight. They shrink in size, but are still moist. They are definitely different than a dehydrated tomato. Next morning, I let them cool to room temperature and then put in a ziploc in the freezer. FWIW - a 20 lb box of tomatoes fills 4 rimmed baking trays, and once slow roasted they all fit in a gallon ziploc. I use them on pasta or pizza or brushchetta. Pretty much take them out of the freezer, chop them, throw them in a pan with a little garlic and olive oil. Them put on the pizza, the pasta, or on brushetta bread. The tomato flavor is really intense. They remind me a lot of the sundried tomatoes in olive oil that I buy at Trader Joes.

Tomatoes are so easy to can in jars and usually plentiful in the summer. Also, I think DelMonte packs tomatoes in jars, most better grocers should be carrying them.

I have some DelMonte tomatoes packed in glass jars in the pantry. Got them on close-out at BigLots several months ago.

I grow and can my own tomatoes so mine are always in glass jars. I've never looked for commercially canned tomatoes in jars. Now you're going to cause me to look the next time I go to the grocery!

Trader Joes has those "starter sauce" tetra paks, but I'm honestly very tired of all the drama surrounding food.

I heartily agree with that statement. We are constantly being jerked around by all the food and food packaging claims. You don't know what to believe or what's important anymore.

Tomatoes are so dead easy to can (just the tomatoes, if you want to get fancy, you might need a little more skill) so I'd do that if I could. It is not only a health issue but a taste issue. But jars are more expensive and cost more to ship due to being fragile, so I don't expect them to catch on big time. But you can taste the difference. Still, it is somewhat of a minor issue, compared to some other unhealthy things we put up with. This year tomatoes on the east coast were a total bust, so without steel canned ones I would largely be going without.

Tetrapaks is another story. They are quite common in Europe. I looked for some in the grocery store yesterday, found one kind, and it was 75 cents more than the steel canned version of tomato sauce and diced tomatoes. They came from Italy. It was also a rather large pack, more than single me would be likely to use in one shot. I buy tofu, vegetable broth and milk in the aeseptic containers and love them! I have a feeling they might catch on with the American public. I think the only reason we don't see them is we're not accustomed to buying stuff that way, but if consumers got educated it might catch on. I was at first hesitant to use them but now I really prefer them. It took me QUITE a while to get used to room temp. milk coming out of a cardboard box. But they pasteurize the heck out of that stuff. Great for those of us who like to keep the pantry stocked long term. I'm going to try out the tomatoes. Hard to compare totally though, since these are Italian tomatoes. I know I won't be able to justify this expense on a regular basis.

Yeah, I don't know. Last I knew none of us are getting out of this thing called life "alive". Kids nowadays have to wear helmets to ride bikes, we never did and I don't remember a single kid growing up who ever smashed his head in. I do remember a hid who cut off his toes riding barefoot....but I digress. Give me a freakin' break. If you ate 100 cans of tomatoes per day maybe I would be concerned, but for those of us who eat 1-2 cans every few months....c'mon now!

We ALL GOING TO DIE! Face it and move on. Live life and don't try to find every freakin' thing in the world to worry about! This kind of stuff just pisses me off!...BIG TIME!

Vettin, I've looked for them as well and the only place I've found them is our local supermarket chain (HEB in TX). They sell glass containers of tomatoes, as well as tetrapaks.

As for finding stuff to worry about, we have plenty to worry about as long as food manufacturers are able to get away with producing and selling unsafe foods. Personally, I don't want to eat fruit and veggies soaked in pesticides, and I also don't want to eat food which has chemicals leached into it from its containers. Maybe avoiding unsafe foods won't make a difference, but maybe it will. And just in case it does, I am going to continue.
