Didn't Buy Lottery Tickets, but....

I attribute our good fortune to the Pizzelles and Biscotti. We took our motorhome in to have the fluids changed prior to our upcoming trip since I was waiting for my treats from Lou. Well, they found a small cut in the brake line and three of the four jacks had blown out their hydraulic fluid. What luck! If I hadn't have gotten the lucky Pizzelles and Biscotti, we might not have been so fortunate as to find these problems and could have had a very serious accident on an interstate. A 16 ton motorhome without brakes is so scary. Thank you, Lou, you're a blessing in disguise!

Wow, Madonna! Reading your post gave me chills. I'm so glad you took that motorhome in for a check-up before hitting the road. Have a great trip & enjoy the pizzelles & biscotti. Lou is very generous & kind.

That was indeed lucky! Did they tell you how the line got cut? I would want to make sure that it doesn't happen again in the future. I had my brake lines vandalized in downtown Austin in the middle of the afternoon, and as I was driving home, I discovered within about 5 miles of my house that I had no brakes whatsoever. They had worked okay leaving downtown and then suddenly they were completely gone. I had automatic transmission, and that made it worse, but I was able to get the emergency brake to help me limp the rest of the way to a service station. What is really scary is that I could have killed a pedestrian, if one had happened to be in a crosswalk where I was unable to stop.

I bought a few lottery tickets maybe twenty years back for my friends' Dad whenever he'd let me use his wonderful old beat-up Ford PU truck. It was red and had wooden racks and sounded gloriously ancient as it rattled down the road. It had a problem with the linkage hanging up now and again and on the coldest night of the year it hung up when I stopped at an intersection a block from their house. Francine and I bundled up against the wind and trudged back to her house to tell her Dad. Oh, my! He was not happy and I was shakin' in my boots as we followed him back up the hill to the truck. He bellowed, "Git down here, girl and learn sumthin' about a linkage! I 'ain't savin' yo' butts next time!" I crawled under the truck next to him and watched as his scarred black hands handled the flashlight and fiddled with some skinny lengths of connected aluminum rods. "Girl; you see where that piece is knotted up at the link? GRAB those two pieces and yank them out straight again! Lawd; it's cold!" I pulled; nothing happened. "Act like you got some sense, girl! I said, 'PULL' and I don't want to hear nuthin' about you cain't!!!!!" Well, it WAS freezing---this was not a fun adventure, so I yanked the heck out of those rods and they straightened out and innocently looked like they'd always been that way. All he said was, "Girl, don't forget what you just learned and don't y'all come whinin' again if sumthin' breaks!" Francine helped me haul some stuff and then we grabbed some goodies and hot coffee before taking the truck back. The next day I bought him five lottery tickets. He looked like he'd just won when he saw them! I made sure to always get him a few each time I borrowed his truck after that, He passed away suddenly a few years later. A nephew from DC took the truck and had it totally restored. I'm glad it was so loved and was still in the family. I never felt the need to buy a lottery ticket for me. It was much more fun getting them for someone else who truly believed his lucky day was coming!

There was an old man, Bob Edmonds, who claimed that he'd been done out of his rightful prize win, and fought the Lottery Corporation in court for three or four years, though it now appears that they'd been aware of a number of unusual claims by a number of their purveyors for some time. His story was told some time ago by an investigative program on our National Broadcaster's TV system. In the original settlement of his $250,000., he was to keep quiet. He fought for a longer time to be allowed to talk about the issue, and to have his lawyer's and court costs of $72,000. covered by the OLGC. Eventually he won. The OLGC agreed just before the weekend to cover his lawyer's and court fees, and to apologize. He knew about that, and the message arrived at the beginning of the week. His lawyer says that he knew that it was coming, but had not seen the letter ... when, after fighting cancer for several years, he died on the weekend. One wonders - did all of the hassle about the Lottery Corporation cause a greater deterioration in his health? Or - did he stubbornly keep going longer, refusing to be bulldozed?? We'll never know - but we do owe the old guy a vote of thanks for having pursued the issue, and to the national broadcaster, as well. ole joyful

Much as I agree with the foregoing comments about lotteries, I do think there are two circumstances in which they might make sense. The first one is that in some circumstances, $1,000 is more than a thousand times as valuable as $1. Here's a simple hypothetical example. Suppose that you absolutely need to come up with $100,000; if you don't, you will be killed. Suppose further that you can raise $60,000, which isn't enough. Now suppose someone comes along and offers you the following proposition: You toss a coin; if it comes up heads, he gives you $40,000, if it comes up tails, he takes your $60,000. Wouldn't you take it? Because if you don't, you will surely die, but if you do, you have a 50% chance of living. The fact that betting $60,000 against $40,000 on a coin toss is unfair doesn't really matter. Similarly, many people who play lotteries regularly probably figure that the amount of money they spend doesn't matter to them, but winning might make a real change in their lives. Irrespective of whether their math is right, perhaps those decisions aren't as pointless from a psychological viewpoint as they might appear at first. And I'm saying this as someone who doesn't play the lottery. There is a second, rare circumstance in which it makes sense to play the lottery. Some lotteries work by distributing a fixed fraction of the bets to everyone who has bet a particular number. Which means that if you can pick a number that few enough others have picked, the odds are actually in your favor. This technique doesn't work nearly as well when lottery sellers offer to pick random numbers for you--but once upon a time I had a friend who used this technique successfully. At the time, he had access to a lottery that let you pick three digits, and paid off half the proceeds to everyone who had gotten them right. This lottery offered the opportunity to "box" a number if all three digits were different. For example, if you bet 346 and boxed it, you would effectively be placing equal bets on 346, 364, 436, 463, 634, and 643. He reasoned as follows: (1) If you picked two identical digits, you couldn't box the bet, so many people would avoid it. (2) Other people wouldn't realize that you could place a bet with a 0 as the first digit. (3) Anything with 7 or 11 in it would be popular, and hence should be avoided. As a result, he hypothesized that 066 or 088 would be unpopular enough to be worth playing. Sure enough, the first time one of those numbers came up, it paid off enough to justify having played it. But these situations are unusual. In general, I agree that lotteries should be considered an optional tax that one should choose not to pay.

One of the things that I'd be looking at is the value of the house. If we're talking about a $100,000 house I wouldn't spend a grand on a ticket. If it's a million dollar house I'd be in. For a $250,000....maybe a $500 ticket? I'd try to scale your price to your market. I wouldn't sell a thousand dollar ticket if your house isn't a half million dollar home (appraised or tax assessed value). think of scaling your ticket price to your house value somewhat...ie a lot of tickets at 100 if it's a 200,000 or below price is likely to be more successful than trying to market a thousand dollar ticket for a house of that value. People are going to do a little homework on a grand price ticket so be prepared to have an appraisal that makes sense next to your tax assessed value. You throw me off when you say that the homeowners are going to get their full price no matter what....you mean they're not taking a bit of a loss here as a tax deduction? That seems....well like an easy way to sell a house. I'd come back a bit hardball on them. It's only a donation when you give something up. Getting full price and "offering" the difference to the HS seems a bit greedy..and a bit inappropriate. I certainly wouldn't expect you'd be paying all of the advertising costs etc. What on earth would their agent fee be? I think your HS might be getting snowed here. I've been involved with a lot of fund raisers....and this has a bit of a smell to it. Not on your part or the HS. I've seen charities take a hit when trying to take advantage of something that sounds too good to be true. People on the board don't think it through...the possible numbers make their eyes glaze over and they forget the downside. I think if you go forward as is with the homeowner expecting a full return, you're going to take a hit, not make money. You won't embaress yourself...the lottery winner will win something, but it could cost your society more than you might think. I'd go back with a reasonable return idea to the homeowner and the offer to split the costs of marketing, no matter the outcome. They can still take this as a deduction if it's a reimbursement to the HS. So it's still a decent deal for them.

I was in Grand Central Terminal today. I passed by a bakery and they had Biscotti, at $1.75 each.

I think Lou should sell them his Biscottis. I don't think I will be buying Biscotti from anyone else soon, after having had Lou's.

I always have my vehicle fluids checked, tired checked, oil changed, etc., when I'm going on any trip longer than a couple hundred miles. Dad always did, my ex always did, Elery always does too. I kind of thought everyone always did that as part of their travel preparations.

This kind of thing is exactly why I do that. It's a good thing it was discovered before you left.

I'm with you, Annie. My DH and I do a 2400 mile round trip drive a couple of times a year. Prior to leaving, he always has the car checked out. Also, my brother in law and his wife are missionaries and drive a fifth wheel all around out West and down South and he does the same thing -- he always checks out the truck and trailer prior to their trip.

I think I would attribute your good fortune and give thanks to a higher power than a pizzelle or biscotti and am happy for you, Madonna, that your brake problem was discovered.

Wow, that is a scary thought. You guys were extremely lucky! We have a 37 foot Holiday Rambler fifth wheel we tow. A couple of yrs ago we had a rear tire blow out on the camper while traveling down the interstate at about 65 MPH.We hear this loud explosion then the trailer started jerking and swaying. Luckily hubby kept it under some control and got it off the the side of the road. It blew out a big chunk of the side of the camper around the tire.

tammyinwv, I've heard of that happening and damaging the rv itself. Its really a scarey thing. The cut in the brakeline on ours was a result of my trying to take out a tree stump (not on purpose) with the motorhome back in December. We think it had something to do with the hydraulics failing and something nipped the brakeline.

We do check everything before we go on a trip as a rule. We had taken our unit in for an oil change and that's when they discovered the brake and hydraulic problems. We didn't get to go on the trip in January because of the hydraulic jacks going out. No replacements could be found anywhere in the U.S. They were really great jacks, but only made for two years specifically for our brand of motorhome, then the company was sold and they went to a different kind for the new models. We wound up having a complete air leveling system put in.

I still say Lou's biscotti and pizzelles were good luck. Lou, I know you're out there, wish you were in here, keep making those luscious treats and know we missed your additions to the forum.
