Did you ever make these ???

Beaded Christmas Ornaments. They used to be popular long ago ... (and I'm sure ALOT cheaper ,too ) I'd love to make some - but boy --- I can't afford many ! I don't know what it is about these - I just think they are so pretty !!!

I thought you meant the styo balls with beads.
I had a separate tree last year for all the beaded ornaments I made last year. I think I posted some of them but they might be off the gallery by now. The ornament kits which usually sell for about 3.99 to 5.99 are now 1/2 off in most craft and Christmas departments.

Sure chicken stock can support growth of botulism. Any low acid food can, and meat and meat broths are low acid. I think everyone goes through that 'scared' to eat it phase. Especially so if they haven't watched an experienced canner a few times do a certain product. The first time I made saurkraut, and the fermentation started I freaked out. Nothing smelling that bad could surely be edible. I talked it over with a couple of experienced kraut makers, and even had one go down and inspect my 'work in progress' and guess what, when it was done.......it was so good. Try to keep things in perspective. If you use a method you know is current and safe, and you followed directions, and the product sealed well you are probably just fine. If you have any doubts whatsoever when it comes time to eat it, follow common sense. If it smells off, doesn't look right, is growing something, or the lid pops off like an explosion when you open it, for pity's sake don't even smell it. Dispose of it safely. If it looks fine and you still have doubts, heat it to the boiling point for twenty minutes. That will kill the bacteria and break down the toxins. I have read the stats on botulism poisoning each year at the CDC websites. If you disregard the cases of infant botulism and wound botulism there are relatively few cases of it from food consumption considering the amount of food preserved annually in this country. That's not going to help you if you are one of the cases, though, is it? In my case the only time I was concerned was when I canned up a huge surplus of potatoes in a good gardening year. Even commercially canned spuds will sometimes get cloudy liquid from the potatoes disintegrating in the heating process.......but it turned me off. I think I pitched them, and am really sure in retrospect they were probably wonderful and safe. I followed the directions to the T.

Lou, the first picture is Pistachio Torrone and I found it on the Martha Stewart site. This is the one that I think I might like to try. Pistachio Honey Torrone Makes one 9-by-13-inch sheet Edible wafer paper, enough for 2 layers in pan 1/3 cup cornstarch 3 large egg whites 1 cup honey 3 cups granulated sugar 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar 2 cups shelled raw pistachios Piece together wafer paper, without overlapping, to fit bottom of a 9-by-13-inch baking pan, and set aside. Liberally sprinkle a clean surface with cornstarch. Pour egg whites into bowl of electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment; set aside. In a medium saucepan, combine honey and granulated sugar. Place over medium heat; cook until mixture just begins to simmer, about 4 minutes. Clip a candy thermometer onto the side of saucepan; continue to heat, stirring occasionally. Beat whites until stiff peaks form; add confectioners' sugar, and beat until combined. When thermometer registers 315 degrees, remove honey mixture from heat. Temperature will rise to 320 degrees. Stir until temperature drops to 300 degrees, 1 to 2 minutes. With mixer running, slowly pour honey mixture into egg-white mixture (at this point, whites will double in volume; let stand a few seconds; volume will return to normal). Beat until mixture thickens and begins to stick to beaters; fold in the nuts. Pour mixture onto cornstarch-covered surface; knead about 5 turns. Stretch and roll to fit pan; place mixture in pan. Cover with another layer of wafer paper; let cool on wire rack. Cut into slices while still warm; store in airtight container, with parchment between layers, for up to 2 weeks. Oh Michelle, I saw those up on flickr and thought omigod...she's made those puppies! LOL!!! I'm not much of a candy maker although I'd like to try some easy recipes. hahahahahahahahahahahahaha... Sorry, our "simple" DIY kitchen remodel that was supposed to take just a few weeks is now well into its fifth month. We thought we had it all planned out but the more we did and the more we learned the more decisions we found that had to be made. I really wish I had found this forum before we started. Would have made some very different decisions and I think our planning would have gone much smoother.

You think those are neat, here's some awesome ones. I found Cracker Box kits a few years ago, i've never ordered, but i love getting their catalog. Very inspiring!! I've also seen some in Herrshners catalogs.

Here's some pics of mine- I make beaded ornament covers, not the actual ornament. All of these covers can be taken off, and the ornament switched if it gets broken, or to just change colors. They are a labor of love, very inexpensive to make, but time consuming.

The ornament covers are beautiful!

sound like a nice life!

and yes, beading is a shockingly time-consuming process- but I tend to think I'm worth it.

by the way- the Cracker Box sits just outside of 'town' not 15 minutes from my folk's house-great shop, in real life- nice to see they're getting good press elsewhere...

though I think your 'shrugs' are nicer than a lot of their kits!

I like all of them but the 1st & 3rd are my favorites!

Minnie, none of their designs are covers. They're all the satin ornaments- you put beads on a pin, and stick the pin in the ornament. Click on the link (in blue, at the bottom of my post above).

China- yeah, beads and beagles don't mix. Don't ever leave your bead boxes open!!

The pictures (imbeded in the post) are all mine. And i did all of those on my own, after doing following the directions for a different one. I got tired of their design pretty quick, and changed counts and stuff to come up w/ my own designs.

Glad you guys like them! If you have more q's you might have to email me, if i don't answer you back pretty quick, i don't hang around here too much (i'm a garden junk junkie!).

The first one (Green Giant) was the easiest to do, but everyone loves it the most. It was easy cuz the ladders are not embellished. The 3rd one i hate- i used irregular beads, hoping for a more textured look, but i'll never do that again. Forget the irregular beads (if you can look closely, it's the white ones, called silk beads cuz of the color- DON"T buy them!).

I cna't find the directions for theoriginal one online- i got it out of Bead and Button magazine. If you google for Beaded Ornament Covers you'll find all kinds of stuff- that's what i did when i started doing my own.

If you're into beading at all, these are really simple. You need to know the ladder stitch, and be able count beads (don't laugh, it gets hard! And it sucks when you have to recount them! I've figured out a trick for that tho.). Oh, you have to have time too. But total cost on these is about $5-$10 depending on the type of beads you use.

I'd be happy to send you directions and/or put together a kit if you would want. I dont' want to get sent to Disney here, so send me an email if you're interested.

Angie, I would love directions for the bead covers.

I was bad & ordered the cracker box catalog, then was bader (bad again?) & ordered 2 kits!

The 2 guys that own the company are a riot to talk to, great senses of humor!

Minnie, i don't quite know what you mean by a cover direction?

I'll give you the basics, and all that you do to change designs is change the counts- of the beads, or the rows, or whatever.
But you have to email me directly, i'm not going to post it all here- it would be way too long.
I'll work on the directions this week, and this weekend, and should get them emailed out beginning of next week.
