Pixies In A Jar

These are my grandchildren. I made them for my ex daughter in law and my daughter. Printed out the pics on the computer and added wings and flowers and stars,used glitter glue to paint them with,put them in old canning jars and filled it with Easter grass and ribbon and charms on the ends. Painted the lids,too. They don't look nearly as good here as they do in real life:) LOL but trust me,they're "purty".

Did you use regular paper or a transparency.

I have always had seal failures with the two piece lids. I have a jam business now, use the one piece lids, and never have had a failure (unless I happen to bang the edge of the lid on something). So I thought about the process of using two piece lids. I am scrupulous about cleaning the rims of the jars. The jars and the jam or tomatoes were really hot and stayed that way for a while. However, the lids cool off fairly quickly when pulled out of the water and I think this is the weakest link in the process. When I called the Department of Agriculture here about using one piece lids, she had said to me "if you have a hot jar, a hot lid and hot product, you've maintained the integrity of the process" (I was nervous about the one piece lids as you can't check them very well). So I started to do what Pixie has done but doing two jars at a time. Pull out two, fill and place lid. So far, so good - no more failures.

I use the lids too. No problems. It's irritating, to say the least, when it would be just as easy to flip the lids over the other way. The last box of half pints I bought had a ring that was bent enough that I ended up tossing it. I have plenty of rings, but when I do have to buy more jars, I usually have the opportunity to cull out a few older, maybe showing signs of rust, rings and replace them with the new ones. Not so when the new ones are bent. I wouldn't want a dent in brand new car, and I don't expect them in my rings. Cost shouldn't determine quality. I think the most frustrating part is that Ball seems like they don't care. That doesn't exactly scream "customer service" to me. Yeah, they'll send you some coupons for more of the same defective stuff, but not make the changes to solve the problem. And it's SO easy! Deanna (off my soapbox now...)

While the button top lids aren't generally recommended, especially for low-acid foods, when using the button top lids you process the jars in a BWB for 10 mins just as you would with the 2 piece lids. The vacuum results from the BWB processing. Once removed from the BWB and cooled the button should pop just as the standard 2 piece lids do. But I'm curious. Why is it you can't use the standard jelly canning jars and and the standard 2 piece lids? They ship just as easily as any specialty jars will. Someone over on the Pinch site was also looking for a corn salsa to BWB, and I started thinking about what Carol said about starting with a relish recipe. Linda Ziedrich has a Corn and Tomato Relish in her Joy of Pickling that I thought would make a good start, just got her OK to post it here, along with the suggested substitutions. Linda thought all the substitutions would be safe, and said she may even try this recipe herself. So here for comparison - caveat that I have not actually made this, so don't know how it would taste, certainly adjust proportion of lime juice to vinegar (keeping total 2C), dried spices and sugar to your taste (Linda does not like sweet pickles or relishes, so I don't think this would need to be reduced): Corn Relish with Tomatoes from Joy of Pickling 4C fresh corn kernels (from about 9 ears) 3C seeded and diced red tomatoes 1.5C diced green bell pepper 3/4C diced red bell pepper 1C chopped onion 1/2C sugar 2C cider vinegar 1Tbsp pickling salt 2 tsp yellow mustard seeds 1. Combine all ingredients in a nonreactive pot. Bring them to a boil, then reduce the heat. Simmer the mixture for 20 minutes. 2. Ladle the relish into pint of half-pint mason jars, leaving 1/2-inch headspace. Close the jars with hot two-piece caps. Process the jars for 15 minutes in a boiling-water bath. 3. Store the cooled jars in a cool, dry, dark place. Makes about 4.5 pints (9 half pints) My substitutions for Tomato-Corn Salsa: 4C fresh corn (may reduce to 3C as desired) 3C tomatoes (may increase to 4C as desired) 1C diced green peppers 3/4C diced red peppers 1/2C diced chile peppers (any variety, may increase chiles and decrease bell peppers as long as the total does not exceed 2 1/4C) 3/4C chopped onion 1/4C minced garlic 1/2C sugar 1.5C cider vinegar 1/2C bottled lime juice 1 Tbsp pickling salt 1 tsp coriander seeds 1/2tsp ground cumin 1/2tsp ground black pepper Same instructions as for relish. Stir in fresh cilantro and/or canned drained black beans and/or avocado as desired upon opening. Now somebody has to make this and tell me how it is!

Great idea, one question, how do you hold them in place in the jar so they don't tip over?? Could you show us a picture of the back of the jar to see what it looks like from behind.

Thanks ya'll:) The pictures are slightly curled,and the Easter grass/filler is holding them up. I've already wrapped those and haven't made my own set yet...I'm sorry I can;t show the back. I did drop in a battery operated votive at the last minute :)

I think if you glued the pic of just the child without the wings to some of that foamcore board. then put the wings on they would stand up better. You could even make a stand like the old time paper dolls had. They were a half circle with a notch and the bottom of the doll had a notch that fit together on the circle.

I'd love to make them of my grandchildren. Even if their moms don't like the I think the kids would love them. Hope I can get some good shots of the kids.

Kudzukween...forgive me for bringing these up again...

But I finally got my kids pictures taken, printed out and cut out. Ready to put the jar together....

I wanted to know what you used for the wings...

I keep seeing something in my mind that is kind of like a
wrinkled cellophane, with a pearlized(is that what they call that stuff that shines pinks,blues and other colors) look to it...

I think that is what I want but I don't know where to get it.

I just got the e-mail, I'm so sorry for missing your post*blush* But I did send a loooong e-mail back to you,lol! Ooh, I bet you could get some of that cellophane and do it like making a fan,and glue it to the back:) I used photoshop and some wing brushes to make mine,and printed them out and cut around the outlines then used glitter glue to paint it, I added a few rhinestones. I put the picture in the jar,then filled it in with Easter grass in a blue color,and also some irredescent color. I used velcro inside the lid and stuck on a battery operated votive inside. Look around the wrapping paper for the cellophane stuff, I saw some at Dollar General where the tissue paper and gift bag filler is. And all the Easter stuff is on clearance so you might find it all on sale:)
