Primitive Ornament ideas needed

I need some help with primitive ornament ideas. You guys are the best so come and help me...PLEASe. Last year I made Name tags out of cinn. sticks and glued scrable (sp) letters on them and ran a small wrie thru them. I used these for my In-Laws. They loved them. I may have got the idea from here. I can not think of anything to use this year. Any ideas? I hope this gets posted, I have tried to post before and it just won't work. Thanks. Donna

Donna, You could make muslin gingers and scent them. First you make small muslin gingerbread men (stuffed). Then you scent and stain them with the following. Brew up some coffee, and add vanilla and cinnamon to it and mix well. Then I use a sponge brush to brush this all over the ornie, both sides. Put this on a towel lined cookie sheet in a low oven 225 with the door open and bake until dry... aprox 20 minutes remembering to turn.Perhaps in the middle of the oven for placement. If you like a really grungy look you can rub ground cinnamon into it after it comes out of the oven.

If you have a favorite dough recipe you can make the same gingers and then dip them in scented wax, but remember to make a hole at the top for your string and to dip with. You might want to replace the string with some homespun after drying them on wax paper.

You can look up my post for cinnamon clay here and make up a pot pourri with some of those adding small pinecones , cinnamon stix and any type red berry (real or artificial) and tie it up with homespun. There are a couple for you. Irene

Well, many of the c. mixta species (like Cushaws) have rather pretty leaves, with silver patterns on them. Take a look at Sandhill Preservation Center's squash listing, which I will put below). Most any c. mixta will have this kind of leaf. Some moschatas will also. You could even call Sandhill Preservation or e-mail with your question. I'd recommend calling. Most squash with this kind of leaf will have rampant vines. You'll probably speak with Linda Drowns. She may have to consult with her husband, Glenn. I saw the ad on CL shortly after it was listed. I called the number immediately, because he was only asking $75 and I thought it would be sold quickly. I couldn't tell much from the picture, but I thought looked like it was pretty old. I don't know about old Northern primitive furniture, but I've seen plenty of Southern primitives and have several family pieces that date to about the mid 1800's, maybe a little earlier. I'm from a rural area and none of my people had "fine" furniture, as far as we know. The description said "may be an antique". We went the next day to see it, and the guy said he had several calls about it but I had called first. I knew as soon as I saw it that I would be taking it home. I almost didn't try to get it cheaper than the $75, since he'd had other calls, but I offered $60 and he took it. I think I got a good deal, even with part of the back missing.

Thanks everyone for all these great suggestions. I have honestly googled everything that has been mentioned in this thread, learned a lot, and have canvased every major nursery in my area. Even though there are some nice nurseries here, they all are pretty much the same. Many of these suggestions are not carried and not available from the suppliers for these nurseries. The American Hornbeam sounded interesting, however only Europeans are available and is a much larger and different tree. Stewartia looked great, but once again I couldn't find a source. Could only find 1 very poor paperbark maple specimen, maybe better stock in the fall. So just because of what's readily available, I'll probably be going with a Star Magnolia, a paperbark maple, or a viburnum of some sort...maybe Burkwood, Judd, or Mohican. Yeah, may seem kinda bland but with what I got available nearby I feel one of those might be the most reliable option. I do have a question about Star magnolia...I read it is one of the most susceptible magnolias to magnolia scale. However, what are we talking when we say "susceptible"? Do i have a good change of maintaining a healthy tree for many years, or is it a forgone conclusion that within a few years I'll have to deal with that? Thanks again everyone, I got some other threads I'm going to start with more questions.

If you want something really simple, you can use some twigs with pretty bark and ribbon or strips of gingham to make crosses for the tree. Maybe to make sure they are sturdy, you could tie them with wire and then cover that with the ribbon. Use the wire to make a loop to hang with.
