Field-stone retaining wall. Pics and question
Comments (4)Your pictures are too close up and don't show how one piece of the back yard fits with another. The main question I had after reviewing your post is, where is all the water supposed to go? In that hole? Is that going to be a french drain? I don't have enough information to summarize the project, but my suspicion is that this project is not well thought out and you're on a path to overkill... making the project bigger (and more expensive) than it could otherwise be. With a drainage issue, what must be understood is the PATH that the water will take which clearly shows that it can exit your property without obstruction. I'm guessing that instead of solving the problem, you're making a "bowl" further away from the house to put the water in. For most rain events it will probably work (but not necessarily without problems.) But when that torrential, freak downpour occurs, the water will fill up the bowl and come back to you. Once the path of the water flow is identified and a strategy is created to direct the water, it may turn out that you can do it without a wall, or with a very low wall. Please put some photos (not close up) on the thread that clearly illustrate the path of water flow until it exits your property. Since it looks like water is entering at the back of the lot, I'm guessing it's leaving at the front. That's where photos should start. Take pictures that illustrate the grade....See MoreStone, granite, slate or ceramic fireplace surround?
Comments (30)To me stacked stone fireplaces look quite modern and seem very versatile in terms of decorating around them. I have had custom-made elegant wood fireplace surrounds with marble tiles, one white painted wood with white marble streaked with gray lines and the other stained wood in a honey color with beige-veined marble and they looked wonderful with Axminster carpets and English-style decor. If that's too traditional for you a stacked stone fireplace seems like the perfect answer. Just picture in your mind's eye what draws you in and go with that. I can't quite picture a stacked stone fireplace for me because the antique Chinese porcelain I collect calls for something a little more formal. Ours is made of bricks which are painted over with a cream color and that's right for me, not too formal and not too informal. We didn't have a choice, it was already there, but it was painted two-tone in beige and brown and that had to be changed immediately....See MoreMarble Herringbone fireplace surround questions
Comments (36)I originally chose this herringbone marble because it has creams, whites, grey and browns, thus, that would match grey, greige, brown or cream carpets. I searched forever trying to find a larger tile for the hearth as I did not want to continue the herringbone onto the hearth. All of the baseboards, doors, blinds, and kitchen cabinets are all a “decor white” color....therefore having me lean towards a cream tile for the hearth. I couldn’t find it. ANYWHERE....I searched high and low...I even order pieces of Calcutta Gold. Once that came in it turned out to be too white. It seems as if all the tile that I can find is either bright white or grey. I finally found a porcelain tile but it was made in China and with Covid I was told it couldn’t be ordered. So....I finally just decided to order enough of the herringbone marble to tile the fireplace surround and the hearth....See MoreSplitface stone vs tile for fireplace surround
