Persnickety's Famous Spreadsheet..try again

I think I'm having trouble posting. Sorry if it's a double post.

I got a copy of Persnickety's spreadsheet last year when we were planning to build. We held off for a year and now I cannot find it anywhere. Would anyone be willing to email that to me? rmrushing@mchsi.com Thanks so much!!

But meanwhile, I've found a couple of other things I think might be helpful for me. I won't begin building for two or three years, but I'm preparing -- and dreaming ;)

Because your employer likes Austin roses, which are bred to have bloom shapes which resembles that of Old Roses. , you might try introducing your employer to some of the original Old Roses, many of which do particularly well in the South, and hundreds of which - bloom more often than Austin roses can because they do not have a period of dormancy, - are beautiful plants, even when not in bloom. - more information about these on the antique roses page at gardenweb each of these roses may be seen in photos at helpmefind.com /roses under search and plant. or on gardenweb under search -Old Garden "Tea" class ( a totally different class (or group) than Hybrid Tea. Because Tea roses do not go dormant in the winter, and they bloom on short flowering stems, they re-bloom faster than Hybrid Teas or Austin roses, and begin to bloom earlier in spring, and later through autumn. a few of the more popular Tea roses that I love: apricot 'Lady Hillingdon' a fragrant apricot rose that I've counted as being in bloom for more than 150 days, ( an average rose flush lasts between 28 and 33 days, during its first bloom cycle of the year with no less than 33% of its full bloom output during that time. (its' pollen is sterile which is why it blooms so much without ever needing to be dead-headed). Yellow 'Etoile de Lyon' my favorite lemony yellow old garden Tea, it has a scent which is called "delicious" by one author and to me smells of honeysuckle, and fresh cream with vanilla in it. Yellow/ with some pink. roguevalleyroses.com Marie Van Houtte (lovely scent, lots of prickles) Mrs. Dudley Cross similar hues but nearly no prickles. Golden Yellow Reve d'Or' can be grown as a 5 and 1/2 foot tall shrub or a climber so can Alister Stella Gray which is a creamy yolk hue, and which has smaller roses. White Tea roses Westside Road Cream Tea (roguevalleyroses.com) Ducher' is said to do well in the south, both are very fragrant, and covered with beautiful white roses most of the year. Mme. Alfred Carriere, a white Tea-Noisette climber which is very popular. Pink, or pink blend. Mrs. B.R. Cant Le Vesuve (China-Tea) very floriferous, has dainty pink blend roses that seem to alight gracefully on the plant like butterflies. a very attractive plant. Maman Cochet large pink and cream roses which show some lavender tints. Red blend Monsieur Tillier this and mrs .b.r. cant can grow to be more than 6' tall in two years. Noisette class Rosebushes from this class are particularly well foliaged, and most are fragrant, some greatly scented. -small flowered -scent is often sweet and spicy, like cloves and roses. Blush Noisette is very popular in the American South, it was bred there, in c. 1803, by a rice farmer named John Champneys. Nastarana a white Noisette. Rosa moschata is a wild white Musk rose that is very fragrant that was used to breed the first Noisette rose. It too is a wonderful garden plant. I'd ask locally which roses are most disease resistant in your area. The only reason, I believe, that everyone doesn't grow Old Garden Tea and Noisette rosebushes is that they cannot: roses of the 3 evergreen classes are not cold hardy, but we who are fortunate to live in California or the South can grow such wonderful roses. Plus, roses from the evergreen group do not need to be pruned to bloom at their best. One need only to remove diseased wood or wood that is out of bounds. I water my largest evergreen rosebushes only once a month, because many have deep roots that reach lower levels of water in the soil. Well thats my tuppunce. P.S. all in all, I'd say my evergreen roses need about 1/3rd to 1/2 less care than my Austin roses. another perk, Old Garden Tea roses grown on their own roots can bloom for more than 50 years, Mr. Austin suggests his rosebushes be replaced after ten years.

Roselee, mine hasn't stopped blooming since it first started in the spring. It has never been stressed by drought because I water frequently. Now that said, I just removed another one that would bloom in the spring, then spend the rest of the summer and fall making seed, and never bloom again. I even deadheaded it this year, and still no more blooms. The one I kept, sets a few seeds, but doesn't stop blooming. After removing the other one I'll probably never get seeds again. I've never heard of anyone with only one getting seeds. Jim

Thank you all, dear friends, you're so kind. Nik, I'm glad you had a good storm. I just read the latest forecast for our region here, and it's predicted to be hotter and drier than normal, which is very bad news. However, we'll muddle through. Marlorena, the fact that I'm still able to water normally helps a lot, and all my pictures lately were taken when temps were low. I won't be whipping out my camera until this hot spell is over, that is for sure. Lisa, I know you're miserable in the heat and I hope you don't set foot outside. So sorry about your DdB, which seems very persnickety. No mildew on my DdB, and she's in a lot of shade. Something seems to be up with yours, although at least it's covered with blooms. Carol, I'm blushing, but at the same time so happy that my pictures give you pleasure. I'm afraid that showing the same few roses over and over will get boring, and I'll be happy when my youngsters have some blooms that are different. I always nip off the buds for at least the first year in the hope that this will hasten growth, but I know not everyone agrees it's necessary. I may give that a pass just to be able to enjoy different blooms.

Thank you!! It's funny to see it going around again. If you do a search for Persnickety's spreadsheet, you'll see where the "famous" comes in. :-) I haven't used it yet, but it's something Persnickety put together to stay on budget and was kind enough to share with everyone on the forum last year.

For those of you who are as anal as me (very detail oriented engineer here), and who also have Microsoft Project, I found a very complete MSProj template file for home construction. Let me know, and I can send that out. Or is there a way for me to upload a file to a 'central repository'?

That is what my husband would love, however, we don't have Microsoft Project. He works on it everday at his job and has mentioned more than once he wishes we had it for this "project". Do you think there is a huge difference in that file from Persnickety's spreadsheet? Project is so expensive.

You could post it in google docs for anyone to access and then give out the account/link info. There may be other places it can be uploaded to, but this is the only one I know of.

In fact, I have a spreadsheet list of things to include in my home that went around many many years ago. I could upload mine to google docs as well.

Does anyone know of a free website hosting site ? I used to use geocities and had a bunch of mudroom locker pictures that kept going around. Geocities closed about 1.5 month ago and I haven't found another place to host them yet.

I often wonder why no one ever says anything about this spreadsheet after they get it. Is it that good, or that bad? Is it for cost tracking or cost estimating? Is it for a Fixed Price or Cost of the Work contract? Is is arranged by trades, specification format, or by systems?

Sorry, haven't looked at this post for a couple days. I have just sent out email number four with Persnick's spreadsheet. I also included the MSProject .mpt and .inf files.

To macv's question: Persnick's spreadsheet might have been very useful for her/him. The first couple of sheets are very clearly her/his project, with headings like "Drew's bathroom". On a couple of the subsequent sheets, there seems to have been some effort -- probably later, after the fact, maybe not even by the original author -- to make it more generic and thus more useful, but that didn't go very far.

All that said, the spreadsheet is useful for what it is. It is not in any way and all encompassing, total project document. The version I have and have been sending in my emails, is strictly for cost tracking of individual components of that particular build. And then only a teeny littly subset of the build. Like fixtures and lighting and such.

It might be a good starting point for someone who doesn't really know what they want to write into a blank spreadsheet.

The MSProject file, on the other hand, seems very inclusive. And it also includes the dimension of time, so you can see the project from above, see the bottle necks, the critical paths. Definitely appealing to the engineer in me.

Of course, all this comes from someone who is only now embarking on his first (and last) owner/builder project. So take everything I've said with a big chunk of salt.

Oh my gosh, ya'll!!! I was giving a friend a link to the board and thought I'd see what's going on while I was here. I cannot believe the spreadsheets are still going around! LOL

There were only two of them that I was sending out, but I had bunches...plumbing fixtures, lighting fixtures, doors/knobs/pulls, flooring, subs, etc. All of the dollar figures from the individual catagories were kept in a "master" that had the running total so I could keep track of the actual amounts I was spending.

We Ob'd and the spreadsheets were very specific to our build. I picked out everything before we broke ground and put my "wish list" items on the spreadsheets with the cost. Then I bargain shopped. Every time I got something from my list I'd fill in the info on the spreadsheets about where I got it and what I paid for it. It really helped keep me focused and on budget! They certainly wouldn't work for everyone, but feel free to tweek and make them your own! :o)

Persnickity - great to see you again! Betcha had no idea how famous you and those spreadsheets had become. Lol.

Now that you've been in your house awhile, how about posting a thread on what you like best and what you would do differently if you could do it all over again? Info like that from folks who've actually lived in their "dream homes" awhile is really helpful to those still in the design stage and even occationally to those in the midst of building.

Persnickety's spreadsheet sounds far more detailed than ours -I had posted ours back in 2007 and had also sent it out to many people. We ended up taking our house off the market last fall (after 2 years on the market) but are planning on putting it back up this Spring. One of these days we'll be able to say we're using our spreadsheet for our build :)
