Question about trim

Well the doors are finally in and the casing around the doors. The window sills and trim under the sills is up also. Looks good. BUT, the floor trim is tacked on in some spots not all, and they have it flush up against the floor. Isn't there suppose to be a gap for the tile? Funny thing is the house sat for three weeks with nothing getting done and as soon as the week that DH is coming home (he flew in today) the doors go up the septic is getting dug. Work is happening, not much work but enough to make it seem like there is something going on. *sigh* Seems like they come and work a few hours and then leave for 3-4 days. I gave the builder receipts for lights and plumbing fixtures and I had to ask him if he got them. He said he had not had a chance to look at them. They add up to $600 or so. I sure would like my money back for them. another *sigh* LOL! 4 1/2 weeks until closing. I don't see it happening!! :-)

Anyway, thanks for the advice on the trim!

DH called the builder but got his voice mail. He asked about the trim so I guess we will wait to see if we hear from him Monday.

The tile in our mudroom is very rough, like rock faced granite. There was no way to put the trim on top of the tile and have it look good, so they tiled up to the trim. The trim was set on top of a piece of wood almost equal in thickness to the tile so no depth on the trim would be loss. In another room the tile was very flat, so the trim is on top.

I don't know what the "right" was is. I chose the way I thought would look best with the tile I chose.

Our trim is going on after our tile. And I've only seen it done that way, but that doesn't make it right/wrong. I believe when you replace flooring, you have to remove your trim first anyway, so I'm not sure it's a matter of right/wrong but maybe more a personal preference thing? We're doing ours after, partly because of construction scheduling (we want to get in the house and need flooring to do so) and partly because as Sue36 mentioned, I don't want to pay for big molding and lose some of it to my thick tile.

So glad you are seeing work on your house, Kel. I know it seems like they are crawling, but hopefully they'll kick it into high gear all of a sudden and before you know it, your move in day will be here and you'll be in on time.

As far as the builder and your receipts, I'm sure he IS busy. But perhaps a daily phone call will help "remind him" and you'll get your $$ back to Christmas shop with. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, and all that.....

I have to disagree with Randy, chickens are FAR from slow and stupid, as my flock proves every time the predator alarm is givin, either by the other chickens or the local wild birds. *L* They are also darned clever about hiding clutches of eggs! I'd say if you have dumb birds, try a different breed. :) I beleive the reason that Polish have gotten a bad rap for skittishness is because they just can't SEE something until it is right up on them--I'd jump out of my skin if something big and scary suddenly appeared right next to me, too! I trim my Polish and Silkie's feathers with rounded small scissors in an area right around their eyes when needed. It's a two person job and the birds need to be VERY comfortable, trusting and relaxed during the procedute to avoid injury--I make a point of picking my birds up routinely and handling their faces and heads by brushing them with my fingers, that way when trimming time comes it's not a big deal. When I prune my Draceana - Song of India, I cut it back to about a foot, sometimes having a 3 foot (or longer) piece that I have cut off. I just strip the leaves off the bottom foot of the trimming, then stick it right in the ground with the parent. It doesn't bush as nicely as the Marginata. The Marginata seems to really like being cut back, but I've had a harder time rooting the cuttings. It bushes nicely from the cut ends on the parent.

hi all, new register today...my issue is much like jim springer,,, going bare at the bottom... 3 out of 10 ,,they seem properly spaced, the trees conceal a chain link fence that the tree limbs crowdly press against, some jut thru and are healthy, some meet resistance and turn brown,, i speculated the chain link fence got so hot it burned the limbs, literally, but what do i know, thats why i searched for help..my initial goal was to top them so as create a hedge row to easily control them,, i do not want to have to use a ladder, i have electric hedge trimmer,, please advise.. phil

wig, This is just my opinion from personal experience when I bought this house. Some trim was painted and some was stained it and it drove me nuts. The stained trim was newer and had been put in my the PO when they were doing some remodeling. It was also a newer style that the original trim, which probably was 1/2 my problem. I finally had the stained trim removed and replaced with stuff that looks more like the original and I painted it all to match, in every room. Previously they had painted the trim different colors in every room in this old house. It was SO good to finally have every room match, so when I need to touch up, there is only one paint can! THAT'S the way I prefer it, but you may not be bugged at all by different finishes. When you say 'floor boards', are you saying that you want to paint the floor itself, or the vertical trim next to the floor that some call 'mop boards'?

I've seen it done both ways. I think, as already mentioned, that if you have tile with a lot of texture/uneven surface, it might actually look better butted up to it. It won't hurt anything--structurally--that way. Might also depend on what subflooring is under it, how much flex that has, how even the subflooring is, whether the tile is being floated in a full mortar bed or thinset installation. Lots of things. Might want to talk to your GC and ask for his rationale for it.
