Being asked doesn't bug me if it's a one-time-only request and isn't nagged about-- it's easy enough to ignore. If there are too many requests from the same person, it does begin to get on my nerves.

However, asking me to vote probably wouldn't do you much good. I almost never vote for things like that. Those kids on the news who got a puppy out of the Facebook likes would still be dogless if everyone was like me.

Or as long as you don't register and ask ALL the time (like she said above).

lol I don't "like" things like that on FB either. And I never copy/repost the other things. Drives me nuts!

It doesn't bother me. I have voted before, but I'll admit that I don't open every thread where someone is requesting votes, exercising my prerogative to just "scroll on by." ;-) I would definitely not vote, however, if the site required registration or any personal information from me.

Same here, I would vote as long as it did not require registration.

I'm not offended by being ask to vote for something. Like others mentioned, I don't like to register.

It depends upon the nature of the request and the online site that sponsors the contest. I'm happy to vote for good causes or people I like :-)

I never vote for anything on Facebook, however, as that will link your page to that organization, even if your account is set on the highest degree of privacy.

There has not been that many requests so far for voting so I'll do it when I can.

Recently, I was voting for an organization that DD asked me to support in a contest, and someone on this forum was also competing for that prize, I scrolled on by.

No one has to do anything they do not want to do. If it ever gets out of hand it would be a different matter I guess.

Thanks for the replies everyone. This is a photo contest sponsored by a jungle lodge we stayed at in Belize. THey want you to post a picture of your trip there and the one that gets the most votes wins a trip for 2. But it is through their facebook page and I know all that implies so I'll pass on the contest. Bottom line is I rarely win anything so there's no reason to think this would be different!!LOL! I'd vote for you-- if I didn't want an association with the lodge, I'd remove it. It's really that simple.

I don't get why some get so bent out of shape regarding such requests. As many noted, it's up to you whether to open a thread.. and whether to vote. People spend way too much time worrying about what others are doing.. or what advantage they may have. I respect initiative and going after something you want-- someone's going to get it, why not you?

I am not offended by requests to vote. In fact, I'm happy to vote for fellow GW'ers causes. I posted a plea for votes a few momths ago for my non-profit pet organization and I'd be happy to return the favor. :)

That was me, and DD2 did win a $50 gift certificate - not near as nice as a trip to Belize. I imagine it will have many more entries! But like funky said, someone's going to win, so your chances are as good as anyone!

I usually don't mid voting either if it's easy- no multiple links- and no registration.

Amazing how quickly things in life can turn - that contest is the least of my concerns now. My DS1 is coming home tomorrow for what was to be a 4 day visit but I may not let him go back or may go back with him. He called earlier depressed and fearful that he may need hospitalization. I'm scrambling, making sure he's not alone tonight before he has a friend take him to the airport in the morning. He says it's not out of the blue but he didn't want to want to make me worry - !!! - so he's been minimizing his unhappiness for months and now feels like it;s out of control. He's far from home, which is not new, but moved from WA to CA last July, left his close friends, wonderful co-workers and girlfriend behind for a job that he thought held a lot of promise. He's miserable at work, lonely and his GF of 2.5 years just broke up with him but this is way beyond heartbreak. I'm numb.

Oh dlm2000, I'm so sorry about your darling son. Sure hope being home and getting some TLC from a loving family comforts him and gets him back on his feet. Poor guy. I'm saying some prayers for you both.

Sending positive wishes to your son and your whole family. He's blessed to have the support to come home to.. we all need a little shelter from the storm at times.

Thank you for the kind thoughts - it was a long night and I'll be on pins and needles till he's here. The closest airport to him is Fresno and there's no direct flight from there to O'Hare - not a big deal in normal times but right now it has me twisted sideways.

DLM, I am glad your son is coming home-he needs you now more than ever. Please accept my on-line hugs and wishes for health for your son. Mine finally came to me and asked me if he was still covered by insurance because he's afraid he's got depression and wants to get help. Both broke my heart and relieved me immensely because he actually reached out.

The uncertainty can drive you crazy. It is good that he recognizes that things are not right and is coming home to sort things out.
He took a lot on his plate by moving far away without a support system. Not everyone is cut out for this. He deserves lots of credit for giving it a go.
I can relate. Most people would be hysterical to get a phone call in the middle of the night. But, we just assume it is oldest DD wanting to talk out a particular problem! And two o'clock in the morning is the best time to do it.

Bless your hearts. I hope he's just overwhelmed and can get it under control. At least he recognized it and is talking to you - that is really good.

DD1 moved to CA for college and stayed 10 years. She moved back here (AL) a year ago. DS went to college/grad school in Chicago, now working and has been there 9 years. It's hard being so far from our babies sometimes, but especially when things aren't good.
