Sears price-match Sears Canada??

So I've been waiting to buy our new appliances until the end of the year (we're not quite ready for them in our new build but I know many will have a price increase in January).

Anyhow, the fridge I want is almost $4000 retail. However, it is listed for $1500 less on the Sears Canada site!! That's a lot of money to me and I feel they should price match, especially since it's their own store.

The way they usually get around this is by changing ONE digit/letter in the model number to differentiate Canada from U.S. However in this case, the model numbers are identical. Their price-match policy doesn't really mention this "gray" area.

Your thoughts??

I have a call into the local store, but the girl already told me no before she hung up but said she would ask a manager and call me back.

In both Canada and the US, there are certain ways of behaving --- (it's subtle) -- that get adopted and become sheep mentalities for a while and it has been observed that they are also like taboos for a while because nobody can publicly analyze them or discuss them without seriously being ostracized. Cross the border and the temporary taboos are different. Even though millions of people have the legal ability to live and work on either side.

This happens in any society, and not just here and there. Deciding to buy certain things simply because they are presented to you through the right processes is a decision-making support. That is how the financial "industry" relies on its tacit principles to make a self-sustaining hoodwinking system that remains legal. Here you have a Sears product, a perfect example of "the right process". Since almost nobody ever looks at a Canadian web site if they are buying in the US, somebody in Sears wasn't thinking or coordinating his/her efforts with the other arm of marketing (US/Can).

Musings, from one whose family is spread out and whose ancestors have been back and forth on both sides of the border for at least 250 years. My grandparents told me what their grandparents had remarked on and it all comes back to the first statement above, the self-sustaining ambient feeling that "this is the way". So, pay full price, and pay the increased price too, because it's the right thing to do.

Unless I'm missing something, Canadian dollars and US dollars are NOT a one for one exchange. Thus the price difference. Plus, you have to go through customs to import from Canada, which can add $$ on top of any price you might get there.

All I'll say is that Yale's warranty service is leagues ahead of Sears. Home Depot and Lowe's don't have warranty service as far as I know, so you'll be referred to a local authorized servicer by the manufacturer, unless the manufacturer has their own service. Just something to think about. There's a lot to go wrong in an induction range. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth the savings for inferior or unpredictable warranty service. Sears warranties are not worth a dime and will only invite frustration and cost into your life if my experience is any indication. I didn't even consider Sears for my new kitchen appliances because I purchased a washing machine and bought their expensive 'master protection' agreement. It has not worked in one year, all the while under warranty. It can take up to 2 weeks to get an appointment. They never, ever show up during the hours of your appointment. Except when I was out of town, I've had multiple tech appointments each month. Finally after 11 months, a tech figured out they had now put in the wrong new control board 3 different times and that was why I had not had a machine in one year...in spite of it being under warranty and in spite of approaching 20 tech visits and in spite of them spending 5 times what it's worth in parts to repair it. Multiple times I've been 'escalated' to Customer Solutions, but when I was told by Elizabeth in Customer Solutions (and later Trish) that I had already had 3 "non-functional failures" so if the tech couldn't repair it on the next appointment...and he couldn't...that would my my 4th non functional failure and it would qualify for replacement. I called and a new Customer Solutions person said their research indicated I had only had 2 non functional failures and denied the replacement. This week, I waited at home 2 days only to be stood up both days. So now, I guess that they can't repair it, won't replace it and no longer bother to show up for appointments they make. And it's always the same, until today's notes are updated, we can't do anything...call back tomorrow. Calls take forever. So if you are even considering purchasing a Sears warranty, here's a tip: When you call for a problem and the person gives you their name, ask for their employee ID number before you even begin speaking. Make a note of it. I used to only write their names down until John denied my replacement and apologized that everyone before him had "misinformed" me. Thus far, the only thing I can see that the Sears warranty people are good at is apologizing. I have pages and pages of notes of my ongoing saga...more than a year's worth. And my washing machine still doesn't work. It was a Maytag 4000 series, btw. By stark contrast, I ordered my new Bosch appliances before Bosch was shipping them to the US and still they ended up coming in late. So the store manager where I purchased them offered me loaner appliances until they came in. Didn't take him up on the offer as my kitchen reno is also running late, but I am thanking my lucky stars I didn't order from Sears.

I would highly suspect any assertion that they would be inclined to price match a company that charges over 4000 dollars for membership. You might as well say you payed the average markup up front for the average family investments over a 3 year period. All those claims of huge savings is mostly way over the top. Your best bet is to go in and try it...sometimes you get lucky but if the price is way below thier profit line even on sale, well I just will have to wait for about 15 people to come on here and say they got this deal before I would believe it. You likely would have at least to produce your membership card as well. IMHO

I have LG front loaders with the steam -- purchased because it was the only model that came in the blue we liked and we'd had such an awful time dealing with Whirlpool that we treated ourselves. I have used the steam feature in both, but I can't say it is something I needed. I do like the machines, the way they clean and the fact that they work quietly and efficiently (the loads are large!). I think you can get the model just below them with essentially all the same features but without the steam and fit your budget. You may not be able to get some of the Sear's super deals price matched at other stores. Best Buy told me they would be losing money and I've hear that elsewhere too. I think Sear's must have made some super buying deals to gear up for this. Factor in delivery and other charges as well as a service agreement (if you plan to get one -- I did not) and make sure you compare your bottom line when trying to price match. Sears tends to run higher on delivery and service agreements.

Did you price them in italy as well? You're not comparing apples to apples. WHat are their import costs? Or export? Tax structure, shipping???

Did you read the policy by chance? (Caps are added by me to highlight the issues at hand)

Is Canada local, and what are the shipping, taxes, etc for the item???? I'd bet it's over the cost at your local Sears.

I kind of take some sort of perverse satisfaction in seeing that the fridge you want is cheaper in Canada :) The only reason I say that is because being a Canadian, I do a lot of shopping in the US, as we are almost always the ones getting smoked!! :)

If the friedge is $1500 cheaper before factoring in exchange rate, and if you are not too far from the border, you should consider buying it in Canada, as our CDN dollar has fallen faster than the Hindenburg in recent months. Your dollar will go a good 20% further in Canada at current rates. So, that 1500 plus exchange is like $1800. That is big change.

Now, I go shopping in Buffalo area all the time. I will tell you the official rates that apply to importing into Canada and the rates I actually get charged.

"Officially", the product I buy will be converted to CDN dollars including tax. So if I buy something for $100US plus 8% tax = $108US...they convert this to CDN....so, say 25%...so 108x25%=$135CDN then they apply our ridiculous sales tax's (13% in Ontario) so 135x13%=$152.55...and officially they can apply duty. If it is manufactured in North America there is no duty because of free trade, but if manufactured else where duty can be applied usually about 7% or so. Now unofficially they have never charged me duty regardless of where it is made.

So, right now 100USD would cost me $152.55CDN by the time I have it at my home. Importing from Canada to US should be similar, except you will get a favorable exchange rate. You probably will have to pay our 13% sales tax, but your favorable exchange rate will more than make up for it. I would say you would still save a ton of money buying at Sears Canada....I would guess you'd still be saving close to $1500. I know there would be costs to go to Canada to pick it up, but when I make trips to the US to save money on products, the money I save on the product, I consider pays for my little "vacation" to the US.

A $2500 item in Canada is $2000 in US dollars if exchange is 80%.
There is no way that transport costs account for the difference in price.
Ontario Retail Sales Tax does not get applied to items shipped out of Ontario.

So the original post makes a valid point.
