Miele or Fagor coffee system?

I just noticed Fagor Brandt has a built-in coffee system with an option to hook it up to the main water suppy. Does anyone have this? It sells for about $500 less than the Miele. We have a Jura Capresso machine and we love the coffee, but now we are spoiled and don't want to have to constantly fill the water tank (esp. since DH always leaves it empty for me!). We have had our machine for 10 years, and so it has paid for itself. I thought Miele was the only option out there. And can anyone comment on the noise level? We love the Jura Capresso, but when it grinds the beans, it grinds the conversation to a halt, as well. Any advice, anyone? Thanks.

I have a Dacor plumbed coffee system and it is wonderful. I think it is more attractive than the Miele or Fagor, and it has an automatic milk frother. You simply place a quart container of milk into the slide out compartment on the left insert the milk hose, and when you press the latte button you get frothed milk with your espress--no need to stand there holding a cup under a frothing stick. It also makes wonderful chocolate milk for the kids. In addition, it has a slide out compartment on the right that keeps cups warm and an instant hot water dispenser. They have a wonderful self-cleaning filtration system that comes with the unit also (or you can buy it without it). Lastly, it has an adjustable dispenser that fits taller cups and some mugs.They cost around $3500, but I see them on ebay frequently for under $2000. THe plumbed model I have is CM24P-1 with filtration & flushing system.

There are other coffee systems that are plumbed but not built-in. Have you looked at some of the coffee sites - CoffeeGeek comes to mind, for reviews? I imagine they've also reviewed the built-in systems which could be helpful.

As a purely personal matter, I have always thought these systems seem a bit overpriced for what you get. And if something were to fail 5-10 years from now and built-in coffee systems are no longer the rage, what then? Refrigerators and ovens are here to stay but the built-in coffee thing, I am not so sure.

But you've probably already factored that into your thinking. Good luck!

In June 2013, was cautioned by Miele tech support *not* to use an RO system in conjunction with our Miele built-in system. According to Miele, RO removes minerals to the point that the machine cannot correctly detect that there's water in the system. It apparently relies on electrical conductivity due to minerals in the water. I believe (but cannot conclusively state) that a remineralization filter after the RO membrane *should* do the trick. This raises the "beneficial" mineral content and tips the PH balance slightly towards the alkaline, so the machine should work. FWIW, I'm on city water that's very hard (420+ppm) and currently use an ultrafiltration system. It does not reduce hardness, though, so I'm considering a move to RO+remineralization to extend the life of my Miele.

The are a few things you can change to make the coffee weaker. First change the amount of coffee (settings, amount of coffee, hit the Taste the coffee. Assuming you were using a mild colombian blend, then those settings should give you a pretty weak cup of coffee. If it doesn't, then call for service as there may be something wrong. Once you have it weak, start changing things back until you get it how you like it. First I'd recommend increasing the amt of coffee (if max or close to max cup size, try it at 1/4 the way from the left). If its still slightly weaker than you'd prefer then try changing the pre-brewing setting to normal (settings, pre-brewing, normal) as this will make your coffee more flavorful and get you a crema. Then set the grinder slightly less coase until then crema comes out a light to medium brown color. Then either lessen the amt of water or increase the amt of coffee to taste. We don't like a very strong coffee either, and our settings are middle amount of coffee, just shy of the max amount of water, normal pre-brew and a fairly coarse grind, made with a medium colombian brew. When we do want it stronger, or have a guest that does, we can add a shot of espresso and that seems to do the trick. My sister loves making a latte with espresso shot when she visits. Good luck! Wow....what great response and so many opinions! Thanks for everyone's advice. The reason I decided upon a built-in coffee unit is that the developer for the high end condo unit that I am purchasing has allowed me input into the kitchen design, errorously put a microwave cabinet on the wall over the built up breakfast bar...no one noticed that the planned microwave oven door would have opened the wrong way!! You would have to walk around the breakfast bar to open the microway door! (The adjoining condo because it is the reverse of mine doesn't have the problem as the door opens into the kitchen.) It seems that no one makes microwave doors that open to the right not the left!! Because the glass tile backsplash and outlets were already installed it was easier/cheaper to install another microwave wall cabinet elsewhere in the kitchen. that allows me to install a unit like the Miele coffee system in the space formerly designed for the microwave oven. But the Keurig coffee maker sounds like a great idea as I can put it in that cabinet space (not built in) for a few months while I decide if I like the coffee pod idea. I'm single so having a single cup of coffee is appealing as I throw away so much unused coffee. If I like the unit, it can help me make the decision. Or I could put the Keurig unit on the counter and install a steam oven in the space instead which is also another option I've been thinking about. So many decisions as I want this kitchen to be special. I'll post pictures when it is done. A built in microwave plus a built in coffee maker or steam oven really could really look great. yes that was my impression too. i'm totally fine with the normal size cup of coffee after dinner but in the morning i need about 20 oz to come to life. actually another one of the reasons i liked the miele was because it has an 8-cup brewing option which is about the size of 2 morning coffees for me (one for me, one for the husband). i suppose if we ever needed to entertain guests, we could always dust off the old countertop coffee maker. oh, another thing that i'm not so keen on is that the miele isn't able to be preprogrammed. from the other thread i gather i need to make sure i get the longest warranty possible. anyone else have any experience with this model?

I had a Miele in a previous home and never quite got comfortable with it. I like the results I get with our Braun (I don't make espresso and such at home) and find it nice to be able to pour hot and fresh cups for a bunch of people at one time rather than doling it out cup-by-cup.
