That's a good thread, even though it appears Worthy has made a mistake. Pros DO NOT backroll sprayed finishes; it defeats the whole purpose (and Sierra; that was me comparing backrolling a car; the comparison still stands). In my mind, the best finish is is you use USG's FirstCoat, sprayed (of course), followed by two sprayed finish coats.

Thanks for the compliment. And I'm glad to be back (living without internet felt much like the stone age... LOL). I will share photos as we progress. :o) It seems like a slow process, but eventually it WILL get done. LOL!

I have a question about yellow travertine over on the decorating forum, if any of you feel like chiming in. I could use some guidance/opinions on that. :o)

USG is United States Gypsum, I believe. The product is FirstCoat, which is a special primer/bonder specifically made to fill all the tiny little pores in both the base sheetrock and the tape joints to prevent flashing. It's far superior to regular primer, and the first step for a Level 4 or 5 finish.

It's so nice to see your name here again :-) Gorgeous bathroom!!!

I'm not sure what is deemed as "the correct way", but for the walls our painters sprayed the primer coat and rolled the two paint coats.

Totallyblessed...WOW! What a gorgeous bathroom this is going to be. Now you have me wanting more pics of your whole house. I bet it's fabulous. Columns and Arches...two of my favorite architechtural designs.

I don't know what the right answer is for paint but I seem to remember them spraying the first coat (and primer) and rolling the second...? What colors are you choosing?

Not sure what color the walls will be. I'm debating golden travertine, and although decorating forum doesn't seem to vote for it, I think I am going to go for it anyway. The recessed area of the tub will be a deep dull red I think. Main colors of the house will be golds, deep dull reds, and olivey/sagey greens. Some deep browns also. Going for an old world look (like you!).

Hey, it's so good to "see" you too. :o) Thanks so much for the kind words. We are really having fun. After all of the hair pulling trying to make our purchased house plan work, this is just a breath of fresh air. It has been pretty painless so far. We'll see if that lasts. LOL! :o)

I guess it depends on which Pro you hire. Certainly not on the sprayed doors and trim. And on the walls, the most common way now is sprayed primer and rolled finish. For metal doors, I've even seen the doors sent to auto body shops for the absolute best finish. (Likely to be soon ruined anyway by a series of door-pounding deliverymen.)

That's going to be a wonderfullyblessed master bath when it's finished.

However, I'd be concerned about those arches--particularly the one between the columns. It appears the rockers just used two pieces of standard 1/2" or 5/8", forced them into a bend and screwed them down. I can even see the creases where they cracked the board--two rows of screws.

At the least, the board should have been thoroughly wetted, so one piece would have conformed to the whole arch. Better yet, they should have used 1/4 inch bendable drywall. If that were my job, I'd have them rip that out and do it right. Or, at the least, add a layer of 1/4" on top.

They'll probably give you a story about the taper being able to smoothe it all out and "this is the way we always do it".
It's a common mistake easily fixed. Insist on them doing it right.

Since I'm Mr. Picky, I'd also want that 18" high section of drywall above the bath replaced with cement board. Or covered in Kerdi before you tile it.

We always dampened the rock (1/2") to form to arches as well. If the radius was tight, sometimes it helps to make a series of relief cuts on the back side, careful scoring.

Thanks Worthy. They did wet and bend the staircase sides (they have a bit of curve to the sides). Not sure why the arch in the bath was different, but dh can ask about it tomorrow. They work 6 days/week!

Yep, that sheetrock above the tub was not even supposed to be put on there. Our tile man will be here MOnday. He had met with them 2 weeks ago to show they what to rock and what to leave for him. That is one area they made a mistake on. He will put backerboard there for tiling. So that will be fixed on MOnday.

Different crews with the same contractor can have wildly differing skills.

On one house, one crew put a piece of drywall out in a light rain till it was just damp enough, brought it in and bent it perfectly in a sharp radius for a ceiling arch. Later, I stood five feet from another rocker as he "bent" a piece of dry 1/2" to match a curving staircase--he screwed it in every 10" and when it didn't bend he simply snapped it, screwed and kept going. Very amusing.
