Why xanthan gum in scones?

I have a recipe for orange cranberry scones that I got off the back of Bob's Red Mill Pastry Flour. It calls for 2 tsp. baking powder and 1 tsp. xantham gum. I've never seen a scone recipe calling for that and I'm wondering what it is for or why it is needed or what substitute I could use? This is the only recipe I have ever seen calling for xanthan gum and I don't want to buy some just for this recipe. But otherwise it sounds good. Bob's Red Mill sells xantham gum so I'm wondering if they included it just to boost sales.
