OK to check boxes every day?
Comments (3)Deanie. There is quite a bit of info about Chickadees on the sialis.org web site. I encourage you to read up. I don't check on cool, windy or rainy days and of course never to close to fledging. My Dees are quite social and are used to me. I think every few days is good unless you suspect something may be wrong. I listen for peeping at feeding time and check the outside of the box and the ground daily. Dees are very vocal if there is something going on in or near the box they don't like (they hate Chipmunks and Wrens). There is always good info on the Bluebirding forum for Dees TRES and other cavity nesters. Creeper, nest checks are an important part of providing safe housing. Lots of things (like blowfly, wasps or ants) can put the babies in danger. A good landlord keeps a watchful eye on the babies and knows what to do in emergency situations....See MoreHardiest Every Day Dishes?
Comments (26)Carol - We were going to get the ones from Crate & Barrell, and the night before I was to place the order, DH managed to break a tooth completely in half. Guess where my dishes budget went? The only porcelain we bought that year was his crown! Then all heck broke loose and dishes were forgotten about for a while. Right before we moved here, I said, "I am NOT moving these heavy, ugly dishes again. Let's just bite the bullet and get new ones." He agreed. We had decided on the Tyler Florence-designed ones from Mikasa. Then he said, "Wait until after the move to order them. No point shipping them here, then moving them across the country." First day I was here, MIL said, "Oh, I remember you said you liked my dishes, so I'm leaving them with you. They were a wedding present from FIL's mother." Soooo... Ah well, At least I do like them. And it IS service for 12 with every serving piece you can imagine. So, no big deal. At least I got rid of the ones I hated. LOL! Compumom, yes, COrelle will shatter. But it takes a LOT to make that happen. You almost have to fling it to the tile floor edge-first....See Moredoes your cat dart for the door every time you open it?
Comments (20)I've used the water bottle in the past to keep my cats off the breakfast table and after a couple of times all I had to do was set the bottle out on the counter and they would walk away. Have a bottle with you and if he's waiting at the door as you're entering from outside, a quick spray won't hurt him but will get his attention. Just try not to hit him directly in the face. Otherwise, the other suggestion to put him in another room will direct his attention elsewhere while you bring in stuff. Does he have a tower, window seat, toys, things to climb, etc?? If you decide to walk him (yes, cats are walked on leash) be very aware of dogs and make sure the leash fits securely. I have a Maine Coon I tried to leash walk and if I stopped and let him just lie around he would roll, twist and turn, and before I knew it he was walking away a free cat. After trying 4 different harnesses, I gave up. Fortunately, his escapes always happened on our property. Some cats are just drawn to the outdoors and this may or may not be an ongoing battle....See MoreDrapes: how to open and close them every day
Comments (6)I hope you do not take my comments out of context as (1) I paid $1,000 each (ouch!) for my rods from Calico Corners and (2) I have clearance behind my sofa where I could've walked to open/close. My fling rods are on some relatively inexpensive stock drapes from JC Pennies. So I have expensive custom drapes and rods in the LR/DR and inexpensive drapes and rod in my bedroom. I don't know that I would've put the inexpensive rod on the custom drapes since they are much heavier--just meant perhaps I'd gone overboard in the LR/DR and could've done a less expensive solution using the cheaper rod as well as the made-to-measure type drapes from JC Pennies. I do notice some pulling on the fabric, but the fabric weight and lining is much less sturdy than my custom drapes. I'd discuss it with the drapery designer you are working with to come up with a good solution. One other thing about my fake rings that is VERY annoying since now you know what I paid for them is that sometimes the fake rings pop off when opening closing. In fact I have about 8 of the "rings" I need to get my step stool out and attach back on. The installer just said that if I found it to be a problem not to use the rings, but sheesh when you pay the $$, you expect perfection. DH thinks I need to discuss with Calico Corners the problem, but I've had the drapes for about 9-10 months now--a bit late to complain or is it?...See Morenatal
